KP in Iceland or other cold locations?

Good to hear about lengthy viewfinder shooting across a broad temperature range. I’ve never paid much attention to how long a small battery lasts in live view in warmer temperatures. It must not have struck me as a problem.

KP in Iceland or other cold locations?

Iceland will have highs of about 5 to 10 degrees c when I am there. My experience with the KP at that temperature range in live view is ~5 minutes on a small battery. It’s really deplorable actually and that’s using any one of six batteries in good condition.. I suspect the compact metal body of the KP conducts cold to the battery faster than the polycarbonate body of a K-30/50/70. KP works great with the grip in that temperature range. I will be limited to a ‘personal item’ sized camera bag, so a grip or an external battery pack of some kind would preclude taking a second body or having to leave a lens behind. I may just forgo expectations of using live view on the KP and take two bodies. Not having a spare seems a bit risky. Thanks everyone for your thoughts. Most appreciated!

KP in Iceland or other cold locations?

Hello. Trying to minimize a camera bag for a trip to Iceland and the UK. I have found that I need my battery grip with a D-Li90 for live view use of the KP under 10 degrees C for the power to last long enough to be practical. Has anyone done a lot of cold weather viewfinder shooting with their KP? Wondering what people recommend for the cold — to grip or not to grip? I do have a half dozen D-Li109 batteries. also have a K-50 that lasts quite a long time running on AAs in colder weather, but KP is preferred. Thanks!

Since this question was first posed here, has anyone ever actually damaged a lens/camera/M42 adapter owing to the weight of the lens?

I saw a place online today called Gosselin in Quebec that has the K-3 iii listed on sale for $1750.00 Canadian. That’s $750.00 off. I can’t see any other websites advertising a sale at all on this camera.

Interesting experience with Topaz sharpen AI

I can see no noticeable improvement in centre sharpness on a modern lens (DA 16-85) on a KP when doing global sharpening in Sharpen AI - just a bit at the corners. So, given Sharpen AI may not improve an already sharp image/image area taken with modern glass, I’m wondering if full frame owners are able to use Sharpen AI to bring older FF glass on par with those modern FF lenses that are already sharp in the corners? As a crop sensor owner, I don’t use the corners of my film era lenses so I get no real benefit from Sharpen AI on my KP with old glass. Maybe a K-1 owner can answer this?

Has anyone compared AI sharpened images taken on vintage lenses in comparison to unsharpened images taken on modern FF lenses? The fact that Sharpen AI can create an even sharpness corner to corner on pictures taken with older glass makes me wonder if the older lenses effectively increase their stature relative to newer offerings. I don’t have a K-1 to experiment with.

Retro Design for Pentax

Interesting technical challenges. I was actually imagining a stripped down body w/o the modern attributes of SR and electronic info in the viewfinder. Quite literally like the days of the old split focus screen. Points well taken. Interesting to consider that the GR III still manages shake reduction. I can see from those cutaways it still wouldn’t extend far enough though. I’d just as soon see a bulky body than Pentax opt for an EVF for the sake of going old school. ;-)

It seems retro designed digital bodies are catching on. The KP was a fairly good nod to the 35mm Pentax cameras of old. Seems the need for a deep mirror box has been a challenge to the K mount and pentaprism in a way mirrorless cameras naturally avoid. Here is my humble idea of how to turn that extra bulk into a possible advantage…

Torn with KP :)

I found the KP odd to hold until I put a lens on. Once I did that, it was a matter of muscle memory and recalling how to hold a classic SLR- styled body. The hold on that style of camera is left hand dominant under the lens. Your right hand simply steadies the body with your index finger falling naturally on top of the shutter button. I think the fact that it has interchangeable grips actually detracts from the ergonomics. What I mean by that, is the different sizes of grip seem to imply you should be able to emulate the pistol grip style of a traditional DSLR and thus achieve a right hand dominant grip. As soon as I held the KP like my old Spotmatic I got it. So now, rather than think of it as a camera that’s less comfortable than my K-50, I have a camera that is far more comfortable than my Spotmatic with just the small grip attached. I wonder how many people turned up their nose at the KP because they didn’t try holding one in the camera shop with a lens attached, and two, by mistaking it for something that could ever truly resemble a pistol grip.

Battery Grip vs Grip Kit for KP

I realize this is an old thread. Wondering given you hold the KP in SLR film-camera fashion with more left-hand support under the lens, if the battery grip's bulk on the bottom actually gets in the way of this?

Looks like a nice camera. Not sure it’s $1400 more than a K-70 kind of nice, but I guess Pentax wants to go premium. Never guessed that it would be more than the K-1 ii. Strikes me as Pentax’s take on the D500. Here’s hoping they still maintain a range of bodies going forward. Congrats on the release, Pentax! That was a long time coming.

Thanks Steve. Dealer here in Canada is very reputable, but I bought the last KP in their national inventory right after it was discontinued. I suspect it’s fine though based on all the responses. Thanks again!

KP SD card sticks on eject

Thanks all for all the speedy responses. I did a bit more troubleshooting based on feedback and discovered a few things:

Multiple new Sandisk Ultra 32 gb - don’t stick
Multiple old Sony 32 gb - don’t stick, but I noted that the label stickers have all been rubbed smooth in my K-30 over time
Multiple new Sandisk Ultra 64 gb - these are the stickier ones and somewhat inconsistent, but all will slide in and out out.

From what others have said, I suspect the 64s may be a tad thicker. The fact my old Sony card labels also rubbed away over time the same way - at the top half of the labels may be telling too. I will still run it past the Pentax warrantee repair folks to see what they say, but I suspect the tolerances in the KPs SD slot are just a bit snugger than my old camera. Thanks again!

KP SD card sticks on eject

Hello. Brand new KP seems to have difficulty ejecting some SD cards. The cards I have tried are are new and undamaged. They don’t get stuck, so they all come out, but the spring ejection mechanism won't extrude certain ones. I have to draw them out with my thumbnail. On my old K-30, the spring has enough force to send the card out like a projectile. Anyone else had this problem? Should I be thinking of sending it for warrantee inspection? Perhaps the KP just has a lethargic ejection spring? There is no problem loading a card in. Thanks!

Bitrates for video - specific to camera models?

Hello. Seems there are various questions around bitrates for various Pentax DSLRs, but not a lot of definitive answers. Wondering if people would like to help settle some of these questions?

On a Mac, if you run a clip in Quicktime Player, hit Command+I this will bring up a data window. Expand the area called 'video details' and it will give you the bitrate of your recorded video. Not sure the easiest way to do this on a PC.

To get things started, I get a bitrate of 23.06 mbit/sec on a K-1 ii recording full quality 1080p at 29.97 fps. I believe the.h264 codec tops out at 24 mbit/sec for 1080p30.

On a K-30/K-50 I get 17 mbit/sec at full quality 1080 at 29.97 fps.

Curious what the K-70 and KP can do. Closer to K-50 or K-1 ii?

Apologies if all this has been researched and answered elsewhere. I couldn't find it. Thanks!

K-50 and ALL upcoming PLM lenses?

Is there any way to know yet if all the upcoming PLM lenses will work on a K-50 with the latest firmware update? Ricoh released a video stating the upcoming DA* 16-50 PLM would only work on cameras from the K-S1 forward. I would hope the latest firmware isn’t somehow limited to the DA 55-300 PLM specifically. Hard to tell from the firmware description note. These days you have to special order Pentax products in Canada with no return agreements, so ambiguity makes it difficult to plan ahead. I would hope the last update is KAF4 across the board. Anyone know how to affirm this?

Noise reduction - different camera body or better software?

I ended up going with Topaz. They had a great Black a Friday sale on their whole suite. DenoiseAI is incredible. It was the SharpenAI that really blew me away though. This program corrected photos with motion blur and made them look like they were taken from a rock solid tripod. The noise reduction within SharpenAI is also quite good on its own. Even lenses that are less sharp in the corners end up razor sharp across the frame. Gigapixel also upscales extremely well. This really solved my desire to get cleaner images out of my K-50 in low light and I ended up also making my DA lenses look more expensive than they are. Only problem is that I no longer have any justification for a new camera until this one dies of old age. In a way, that suits me fine. Part of the joy of outdoor and travel photography is getting the shots I want without thinking how much the electronic box around my neck cost, and what I may subject it to in the process.

Is K 70 reliable enough for budding 13 y/o photographer?

Sorry on many levels to hear of yet another model possibly afflicted by the solenoid problem. I have both a K-30 and a K-50 that were each repaired for faulty aperture solenoids by an authorized Pentax service centre. At least the K-50 was under warranty. The K-30 went after 60,0000 on the shutter so could not complain too much. The repair guy told me that in his experience once a camera is repaired for this problem they seem to stay repaired as he had never done a ‘re-repair’ on one. Both my repairs are now over two years ago and no problem since - even the heavily used K-30. Given the K-70 may also share this sometimes affliction, I can say I am happy I paid for my repair vs taking a chance on a K-70 at much higher cost than the fix (~$200). Granted, I’m interested in the K-3 ii replacement coming out as the flagship models seem more dependable from what I read.

K-70 replacement model?

I see a number of retailers in Canada are listing both the K-70 and KP as discontinued - unavailable for order. With the new flagship coming, I get why the KP might be discontinued, so I wonder if there has been mention of a refresh to the ‘double digit‘ model line? I also see the DA 18-135 lens listed as discontinued in places. Maybe a new PLM version in the offing? Or is that just hopeful thinking? In any event, it is encouraging to see new Pentax products appearing alongside close out product such that retailers seem committed to supporting the brand going forward.

Noise reduction - different camera body or better software?

I am curious about noise reduction. On occasion travelling, I need to shoot without tripod or flash in low light. My K-50 can handle ISO 6400 fairly well for grabbing an image for posterity, but it is often a bit noisy past 3200 to make a nice print. Would I be better off getting certain denoise software (I find Nik dFine tends to reduce detail too much), or are newer Pentax bodies noticeably better at higher ISO? I also can’t wrap my head around smaller pixels in newer sensors being better in this regard. Any real-world experience shed some light on this? Thanks.
