The Canon T3 I found in Milan (Italy) doesn't seem to be configured like the images I find on Google. It's impossible to thread the Pentax double cable release into it, like a piece was lacking. I found another one in London and I ordered it this morning. We'll see what happens next ...

Best image of the day, diffuse light coming from a window on an overcast day, tripod-mounted 645Z, 645 A 120 mm f/4, 800 ISO. I had this lens hidden in a drawer for several years and I'm just discovering its potential now. Better late than never ! It is perfectly balanced when mounted on the 645Z and could be used for portraiture too (but maybe too sharp...). A sweet lens indeed. |

Sounds like this is a subjective evaluation, so I'd still perform the test. It may only take a very small adjustment to get AF to lock at infinity.

First, please don't hesitate to take issue with any of my posts. I can easily be as wrong as the next random person on the internet. And, more importantly, we can both be "right" but have a difference of perspective on to photography that actually brings more enlightenment to the topic.
I agree with most of your points so maybe this is more a case of difference of perspective.
Yes, thin DoF is a niche that only a fraction of photographers seek. And thin DoF is correlated with sensor size making it seem that a 645Z should be better than a K-1 in the same way that the K-1 is better than APS-C for the thin DoF niche. But the correlation breaks down for larger format cameras because they typically have smaller aperture lenses. To replicate the thin-DoF effect of the K-1 and new DFA* 50/1.4, the 645Z user would need something like a 65 mm f/1.8. Unfortunately, the fastest of the 645 lenses are f/2.8.
I agree that comparing 645Z single shot to K-1 PS is a bit apples and oranges but at the end of the day if one is looking for the highest resolution possible, then one might not care if it required an apple or an orange to make it. Stacking might provide the DR of PS, but getting a uniform and consistent boost in resolution is harder with stacking than with PS. Of course, one could also use the 645Z and Brenizer to build higher-resolution images but that's bananas (added to the apples and oranges.) ;)
My last point about camera size is about what fellow photographers, clients, friends, and strangers think when a person shows up with a huge 645Z (or a 4x5 view camera) versus a normal-sized DSLR or a dainty mirrorless. In theory, camera body size should not matter so much. For a great many modest-print-size shooting scenarios, a Micro4/3rds camera can get images that are just as good as the 645Z's. It's only when the light dims or the print gets very large that the DR and resolution of the 645Z can trounce the output of smaller sensor cameras. But the impression that the 645Z makes on others is part of the total equation of camera choice. The 645Z is impressive in a way that no full-frame camera can match.

Simple install. But I’ve never had to do anything with my Canon bodies, either, and I have a Maxwell screen in my 5D.

On my 645z, the eyepiece is focusable. I think it is on my 645N and NII, also, so I would be surprised if the D is not.

That makes no sense. Fungus spores are everywhere, including in many of our clean and sparkly lenses. It is the lack of the right conditions that prevents growth.

I'm sure you're right, but I suppose that for subjects moving at non-superhuman speeds and for images viewed at any reasonable screen or print size, it would be close enough to frozen as to not be noticeable.
For the benefit of the OP wondering if Einsteins will perform better than his Alienbees, I just did a quick and dirty comparison between an Einstein and an Alienbees B1600, both of which are rated for a maximum output of 640ws. I used a spinning fan for my test subject.
Click each image for the full-size version.
First, here is the fan turned off, for a baseline.
And here's the fan running, lit by the B1600:
And here it is with the Einstein, at 40ws. While it is not perfectly frozen, it is at least close, and is much, much better than the B1600. The sticker spinning quickly in the center of the fan is essentially frozen and is sharp, while the stickers at the ends of the blades are soft but can still be easily made out. Overall, it's a dramatic difference.
And finally, here's the fan shot under direct, noon-day sun. I used my K-30's maximum shutter speed of 1/6000 sec, but in order to match the same f/6.3 aperture of the studio shots, I had to bump the ISO to 800 from the base of 100 used in the studio. As you can see, the Einstein froze the spinning blades better than the 1/6000 shutter speed could. |

To the OP. I think you should cancel your trip. Who would want a photo of NZ anyway, just pick up a copy of Lord of the Rings and take some screen shots.

I haven't posted, not because I haven't been shooting, but I have been using the K3II for most of my recent travels.

Thanks Bob - I am just leaving for 10 days shooting in North West Scotland, so between the heavy rain and wind (it is Scotland!) I will see if I can work out what is happening. Will report back

I find a lot of the responses on this thread more than a little patronizing (some very informative posts also though). I can see where the responses are coming from, but the tone is a bit uncalled for. If a person has the means (funds) to buy premium gear, more power to them. The insinuation I'm getting from some that the OP should buy an old, dusty K-way-before-i-started-photography, to learn photography and not use equipment they cannot fully utilize is annoying.
To the OP I would say that do a lot of research and find a camera that you will want to use and enjoy using. That way you'll learn to utilize your gear and get the results you want all the while enjoying the process itself.

Bob, cheers for taking the time to test. I really appreciate it. I had sent an email to B&H as well and they reiterated your findings. 8mm filter will not cause any vignetting.
