What happens when you have your K-1 upgraded

First thing I noticed, a little concerning.

Still very undecided as to get this upgrade, the company doing it in the UK I trust, been in their service center as a customer that they did work for on a large scale repairing a product we sold, when out of warranty, always great service, and always left our customers happy.

But I just don’t know as I am happy with the K1 as it is and £450 is a lot for some minor changes, when it could go towards a new lens...

Oh the decisions....

I went for the Metz in the end, SRS gave me the offer price, always been a great company. I am unlikely to use it as a master/slave unit so fingers crossed everything else works well as I have found little in the way of reviews of the 64 with the K1 so I am going in a bit blind..

Last night I ordered a Metablitz 64 for my K1.. at quite a good price, this morning my order was cancelled, my billing address was wrong, my bad. Upon reordering the dealer wants £20 more as the offer ended last night, so I did not hit submit..

I will ring the dealer and see if they with do the deal price in the morning, only because if you buy the 64 for let’s say Canon or any other brand it’s £279 but if you want Pentax it’s £299, it’s the same unit just a change in the mount.. think I am being fleeced..

I have had a good look at the flash options for the K1 and came to the conclusion the 64 was a great option, but having a second chance now, it’s a mine field... Anyone have any opinions on other options..

I did consider the 54 model, but just feel the extra features of the 64 such as the extra fill in flash may be handy one day..

Cheers...

Yes I tend to post only in 720 onto Vimeo.. Mainly due to being able to crop (zoom in on parts) with no loss and just personal choice and I don’t get hung up on having everything maxed out

Used my K1 as a second camera filming the Euros, it's a kite buggy racing event held each year.
Main camera was my JVC GY-HM600, along with a couple of drones.. the K1 was mostly used for stills but some of the video is off the K1 and it did well once I got it all set up..

K1+grip?

I bought my K1 with a lens discount rather than take a free grip, last week I bought a used grip, in all effect it was brand new. I just could not part with the £230 they go for because I didn't think I really need it but when one came up at £150 I didn't hesitate.

It does add balance when using it with my 17-30 and 70-200 lens and the AA battery support may be handy one day, but the bulk is both visiable and you can feel the weight.. but in the short use I have given it it has been worth it.

The camera feels more solid to hold because of the extra surface area so does improve the feel and hold of the camera.. weight is not noticeable but then I do use two rather heavy lenses on it.

There is a couple of design flaws I don't like one is the tripod mount is off centre and does effect the balance of the camera when on a lightweight tripod and where the body and mount join there is not much of a seal, leaving a gap for dust and water to work its way between them. I take a fair few pictures on beaches when it's windy, I have yet to see if this will be a sand trap but it looks like it could be.

For me it was £150 well spent, but £229 not so sure..

Hi

Just an update, i bought the DFA 100mm, Never made the £250 but in this game we all know we spend more that we expected.

In simple its a cracking lens and thanks for the recommendations. I looked at all the suggestions offered here and the 100mm fitted just what I needed it for.

Thanks guys...

As I said its mainly for taking pictures of products and some macro work, not really about sitting in the middle of the two lenses, I will talk a look at the recommendations when I can get down to SRS, the 100mm is at the top, reviews come up well, but I also like the idea of the 50mm, I can see whats going to happen here I will end up with two lenses and spend well over my £250 lol

I have a K-1 and two lenses. They are heavyweights as well, 15-30 DFA and a 70-200 DFA both of which I am very pleased with.

Now I am looking for a good lightweight lens to sit in the middle of these for mainly taking pictures of products and some macro work.

Anyone got some good suggestions of what lens I should be looking at. I don't mind a good secondhand lens but I want to be as close to £250 as possible. Is there a lens out there I should be looking at above all others..

Thanks

Hi

First time I have tried this and not sure if its working..

I stacked and then aligned 40 JPG images, full size straight out of a K-1.

My Mac is not short of speed, 3.5Ghz, i7 with 32GB of 1600MHz DDR3 and NVIDIA GTX 780M 4096MB.

Last night I left it on to Align the 40 images and it took all night. Today I have been trying again to do another image this time I have used the RAW files and my Mac has been on all day and still nothing, this time its 53 images again out of the K-1

The first image I managed is okay, but I want to do another from the raw, should it take this long. The images were hand held so I guess it has to work a little, but there was not much movement.

Can you align RAW and should it take that long.

He is one of the images so far, but I am not totally happy with it. https://flic.kr/p/K5YgWS

I have the K-1 mated to the 15-30, they are both my first new body and lens in 15 years, I don't have any other lens to go on the K-1 as yet so I have to make the most of what I have. It was a tough decision to get that combo.

I like taking landscape images and the lens is ideal, but I also kite buggy and a more powerful lens would have been great. Having only the one lens has forced me to get close and I am getting some great images. I am over the moon with my kit and love the 15-30, the next hard choice is what lens to get next.. I am tempted with the D FA 70-200 F2.8 but it leaves me with a gap in the middle..

My K-1 developed the mode dial fault where no matter what you did it stayed in manual..

Bought it from SRS Microsystems, UK, I emailed them at night, first thing in the morning I got a reply, send it back and two days later I had a new replacement back. I was without a camera for three days. They even sent it back on a Saturday delivery.

The whole experience was outstanding, all credit to SRS and their it totally professional service..

Well done chaps.... :):):)
