I too think Pentax will miss the train if they don’t follow up with another KP like body.

The fact it’s holding its value on the used market shows how a compact body rivaling mirrorless options is sought after.

I can see the reasoning behind the coming of the KF- an affordable entry into the Pentax DSLR world that is doable for many. And it is remarkably rich in features and practical controls as well as remarkably capable at such a reasonable cost... and without the parts problem of the K-70.

However, the KP is for advanced photgraphers looking for compactness in an advanced camera. Some have been as well looking for a DSLR alternative to the advanced APS-C mirrorless offerings, which have basically taken over in attracting this need. In the KP, this alternative was met! It has been and is an outstanding performer in the process of meeting this need. The outstanding quality of images presented in this thread are undeniable proof of this.

After all the criticism with which the KP was met after its release, the story of the KP is a good example of how, once something special is gone its virtues become more recognized in hindsight. People become more aware of how special it is. It remains I think the only model that has maintained such a high price on the used market, the only model after being discontinued, where the price of left-over new stock went UP after discontinuance instead of closeout bargains!! The KP has been a huge success after all.

A KP II COULD also come into being as a success, if done with care. Its virtues of compactness and as a DSLR alternative to high-end APS-C mirrorless should still stand. First and foremost, its few weaknesses would have to be rectified- the vulnerable mode dial and rear screen cable. Then some lessons in advancement as carried forth from the K-3 III. And finally, a secure source for parts, along with better distribution.

Many photographers, some also owning the K-1 II, as is the case now, would greatly value having such an advanced, compact APS-C DSLR. They'd rather give up having 2 card slots, a larger battery, etc. to achieve this compactness, along with such outstanding performance. Many of us here are grateful for such ownership. I too have found my KP plus K-1 II ownership to be a knockout combo!!

The KP is a great camera and it should have remained in production. Sometimes it is hard to understand Pentax's product decision

If they had used the KP as the Mono camera I would have been very tempted.

I think Pentax managed to miss the boat when they chose to release the KF.
In my mind, a revised KP would have made so much more sense, even if it was effectively a KP in a K-70 body.
Doubtless parts availability and financial constraints were considerations :(

I wonder if after the film camera, but before the new full frame, Pentax might bring back something like the KP. Seems like it'll easily be popular enough!

The somewhat quirky FA43 would be a great addition for shots with more character and a lightweight compact setup. I use both and like my FA43 especially on the KP, but it requires a little more care in terms of composition (usually "mid-ground") than the DFA*50, which you can just point at anything, chose the DoF and get what you ask for - with the exception of stars, because, typically for Pentax, there is a fair bit of coma left uncorrected for an otherwise very pleasing rendering. I'm still wondering where the Irix 45mm would make sense, aside from video and film cameras.

Same here. Along with my violins, this lens will need to be pried from my cold dead hands.

I haven't had mine all that long (since late last summer), and spring is in the air, so I'll be giving it a workout on wildflower season this year (which basically starts in maybe a week or two).

Dogs especially seem to love it ;)

I've definitely enjoyed using the the DFA *50 f1.4, both on my K-1 and K-3 III.

(this one on the K-3 III)

(this is a K-1 shot)

Before Dawn by Vincent1825, on Flickr

(I will say that if you are used to decent sized zooms like the 24-70 f2.8 or 70-200 f2.8, this lens won't feel big at all. I probably wouldn't get it if my main intention was to shoot stopped down to f8 or f11 -- it is in the f1.4 to f2 range that this lens stands apart from the other 50mm options out there.)

There is one thing the FA 43 can do that the DFA 50 1.4 can not do.

I picked up.a used copy for 1/3 new … Now I will decide if the FA 43 goes … i’ll see if my other half will use the 43 on her k-50 as 50 is way to heavy for her to use unless on a tripod … I got a holster case that it will nice and snug in …

For my K-70, I think the best prime is the 21mm Limited, and best zoom is between Pentax-A 24-50mm and the 16-85mm, depending on size/weight preferences on the day.

For K-01 definitely the 40mm Limited pancake.

For K-1 I would say best normal prime is the Pentax-A 50mm macro (I would add the 100mm macro as a tele lens and SMC Pentax 20mm f4 as a wide) and best zoom is the Pentax-A 70-210.

For my Spotmatic, best would be the SMC Takumar 85mm f1.8, and probably best normal lens would be the Pancolar 50mm f1.8.

I tend to reach past my SMC 50mm 1.2 for the Revuenon 55mm 1.2. Such is personal taste!

*Non-Pro* Tip --- Battery check!

I learned the hard way that before you go out on a road trip to take pictures an hour away from your house, you may want to turn the camera on and check to see if the battery is not dead.

Had an hour of panic driving home after I took THE. VIRIDIAN to the truck garden to get some test shots and flipped it on and... nothing. I had no spare on me, I didn't notice if it was already on when I grabbed it, and I vaguely recalled pulling the SD cards out and reinserting them and seeing the blinky light a few weeks ago.

Biggest worry was if this was actually a camera issue and not just a dead battery ... the baby does not have a US warranty.

Anyway, got home, put in a spare battery and all was well - including the date/time, so no harm done, other than to my mood and my gas tank.

Will never make this particular mistake again, but I expect I'll make a different one next time.

This is how we learn stuff. :)

Sometimes things don’t work out as planned

No wonder it was overcrowded. We were all there
I was there the first 2 weeks of October.
I saw a few DSLRs but other than a Nikon 850 and my K5-II everything else was either a Rebel or a Nikon 3100, all with kit lenses. Saw some mirrorless (Sony most of them) and some bridge cameras. A few bigger than usual lenses were spotted from the distance, but judging by the fact they look like just having a rear cap, I suppose those were mirrorless with big adapted lenses. None looked like a Pentax Q family by the way. I did see a disposable film camera and saw film available, but at ridiculous "desperate-tourist" prices.

Thanks,
Ismael

I shoot mostly landscapes and old buildings. I saw an offer on eBay - Japan for a Pentax FA* 85 mm f/1.4. I purchased it for 574 US$ and now I am trying it on my run-of-the-mill subjects.

The new DFA* 85 mm f/1.4 is much more performing in the aperture range between f/1.4 and f/4 but costs 2700 US$. It was designed to keep light rays parallel wide-open so they hit the digital sensor in a perpendicular manner, thus creating a sharp image at wide apertures.
My "old" FA* 85 mm f/1.4 bends rays a lot wide-open, so the lens is soft and glowy and produces resolution-killing chromatic aberrations. My FA* 85 mm comes into its own starting at f/5.6 and produces "perfectly parallel" rays around f/8-f/11 and, doing so, becomes as sharp as the DFA* 85 mm at middle apertures.

I always use middle apertures anyway, as f/8 really hides slight focusing errors and provides edge-to-edge extreme sharpness in landscape image-making.

The DA 15 Limited seems to be the equivalent lens for the K3. The perspective, color, sharpness etc is excellent.

Of all the "favourite" lenses I own, the DFA 21/2.4 is definitely right up there. As is the DFA* 50/1.4, 70-200/2.8 and 85/1.4, and the A* 135/1.8, and the DA* 11-18/2.8, 16-50/2.8 PLM and 300/4.0. And several of the Limiteds. We Pentaxians are very fortunate in our choices.

In contrast to @bdery the DA* 60-250 wouldn't even make my top 20. The IQ is indisputably good, but the handling and AF let it down.
