Thank you that is the part on which I wanted confirmation, so it is a normal behaviour.

BTW thanks for advices about A-modes but I don't use them, that was just to describe my testing scenarios, they usually give very poor results in real life situations compaired to SEL-modes

Confirmed after testing, it does fire immediatly when I use those settings:
- AF.S
- focus priority
- shutter set not to focus when being half pressed
- AF back button set to focus

I can say it performs very well like that in low light situations.

Now please, If you can check this one, because I'm not completly sure of understanding how the body should behave in AF.C:
- AF.C in A-9 or SEL-2 or SEL-3
- focus priority on the first frame
- focus priority set during bursts
- shutter set not to focus when being half pressed
- AF back button set to focus
- AF hold off or low

The body allows to fire at every moment, even when I'm pressing back AF button and focus is not acuired. Is there something I don't get ?

Hello, not at the moment, my support ticket have been closed saying the'll get in touch quicly and my local Pentax seller didn't get any news from his tech support.

edit: 16 days ago I opened a support ticket, it has been closed without technical infomations, I asked for news and they said that communications with Japan (I'm in france) can be slowed down by the distance. Still waiting.

edit 2: one month and still no technical information provided

I confirm this behaviour on my K-1 body with th HD D FA 24-70mm F2.8.

Edit: A famous french website called lesnumeriques.com usually measure AF times so as to compare them. In their K1 test (http://www.lesnumeriques.com/appareil-photo-numerique/pentax-k-1-p31421/test.html) they pointed out strange behaviour with AF = in the same conditions times to acquire focus are completely different, and focus times can be doubled for no reason. Test made with the exact same lens I own: HD D FA 24-70 f2.8.

I directy wrote to them to ask what priority was set when then made the test, I'm waiting for an answer.

Yep, I usually use a pattern well contrasted on a shirt or someting that would be in the same plan as the eyes of my subject as it is often advised. You are right, for now I'll choose to shoot that boxing event with LV, not great for the battery I imagine, I also choosed a 1 kg DSLR instead of a mirrorless because of the viewfinder. I don't want my camera to do better in low light cause it does acquire focus, I just want, like you said too, an update to stop that lag when in AF.S and set to focus priority.

Thank you for all informations and advice, as I said I spent hours reading about those techniques. No the K1 isn't a sport camera but it has nothing to do with the lag behaviour biz-engineer tomO2013 and I reported, I talked about boxing cause it was a way to underline the difficulty of that lag in AF.C. When I shot 14 hours of shows, and did it in AF.S.But if you can't perceive that lag, it makes no sense to you.

Almost all kind of flashlight are prohibited in concert / shows I'm compelled with switching it off, making people's faces green is a big no no in theatersand is considered as a distraction in boxing clubs.. , but with or without, I still get faster focusing in release priority.

Yes you are right, having it set to auto was a mistake. But does it explain better burst results in live view than in view finder ? I'm talking about boxers on a ring in a dark room, not high contrasted ducks on a white sky.

Precisely not since I'm trying to explain that it induces a small lag in low lights situations. But have you even tryied release priority to see if it focused faster in low lights ?

Yep.

We're talking about a delay that occurs between (or during I don't know) the focusing and the blinking light in the viewfinder. So no, there is no delay between the blinking light and the release.

Thank you I will I'm always glad to hear advices ! It maybe bad settings as you suggest. Just to get clear the shows I shoot are far from professional concerts which usualy have lot bigger budgets for the lights than the tiny french theaters I go in.

For info another user is reporting this issue.
I did not became aware of this behaviour myself, I read this post: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/190-pentax-k-1/319924-can-anyone-k-1-give...view-af-4.html

tomO2013 seems to have performed several tests and noticed that there was a delay in a particular situation. Before finding that post, I have spent days reading about focusing techniques, manual, auto, focus traps, try tripod, crouching, proning, shooting faster, all possible SEL 1-2-3 and almost all sensors and sensors disposition in AF.S and AF.C but never touched shutter priority and never used the live view so much (always in the same conditions, light, angle, lens..). I never asked on this forum because I was convinced I was the problem and my technique and/or settings were bad. I read that thread, try to disable focus priority, and got 85% of focused pics instead of 85% of strange focused pics. Nothing else but that setting changed.

I never talked about the back AF button, maybe it works, but it's a choice to use it or not, maybe a workaround but not a solution, the lag i'm talking about is concerning the main shutter button paired with the view finder. My AF back button is set to allow manual focus for screwdrive lens like FA 50mm 1.4 as it doesn't support quick manual adjsutement when autofocus is on..

If you wonder why people would sell their K1 I have a very good reason to sell mine and its 24-70mm 2.8. There is a very very frustrating behaviour on the body. Try it for yourself, when in low light, (I shoot night shows) try to aqcuire focus with shutter priority set to focus, see how long it takes. Now try the same thing without focus priority, you will see your body focus much faster.

Phase detection seems to be pretty weird as shooting bursts with live view gives better results than using the viewfinder (=PDAF vs CDAF)

I got a boxing championship in 15 days, I still don't know how I'll make it without a reliable, priority foscused AF.C mode. Technical support told me yesterday they were not aware of that. I know there will be updates, but shooting everyday with this particular behaviour is really annoying.

So if you want to get it in Lyon (France) here's the deal, buy my complete kit (45 days old and 4 year guarantee) and I'll give you a Pentax SMC-FA 50mm 1.4 that cost me 250€ used.

As it was explained before by @tomO2013, the lag is created when a focus priority is set on and used with PDAF which, I suppose, can occur in both AFC ans AFS modes.

There is no reason to think that AF.C isn't affected by the bug as long as it uses phase detection (in the optical viewfinder) and you set it to focus priority. What you are describing @Barry Pearson is very similar to my problem: a misfocused pic that was taken with an option that only allows focused pics.

By checking again and again old shots, I noticed that bursts taken with live view (=contrast detection AF) were more focused than OVF ones. (at that time focus option in AFC were set to "'auto", as I haven't read this thread).

K-1 firmware seems to have a problem, turning the focus priority off make the body focus really faster in my case, and in low light, it seems to make it focus better but that may be just a feeling. I'm hoping for a very quick update from Ricoh.

edit: i just called Pentax support to warn them of this issue, they'll answer me quickly, I'll post here the results.

Hi everyone !

I can't tell you how useful are these informations. Thank you so much @tomO2013, and all of you for this precious knowledge.

First it's important to say that I'm a very inexperienced photographer (I prefer to call myself a "picture taker") who had the opportunity to shoot (very) intensively. I did architecture during 2 months using a Fuji XM1, tried a Nikon D3100 for one month (portraits) and bought a K1 45 days ago in order to use my dad's old SMC Pentax M optics (SMC-K 50mm F1.4, SMC-K 35mm F3.5, SMC-K 75-150mm F4, SMC-K 35-70mm F2.8-3.5, Hisawa 200mm F4). I choosed a DFA 24-70mm F2.8 and a FA 50mm F1.4.

I started to shoot improvisation and dance shows for a month now (about 7 representations lasting 2 to 4 hours each) in low light environnement. I noticed that about 85% of my pictures were out of focus, at that point, I've already spent hours reading about focusing techniques, manual focus, focus traps, focus modes and focusing scenarios. I came to the conclusion that I had a bad focusing technique, and read more and more. I tried to fire faster, stop breathing, crouch, prone, use tripod and every focusing modes / selections possible on the K-1 even if I knew there weren't appropriate to the situation, always the same result: 85% percent of not-so-sharp pictures **BUT**, I' never tried to switch release / focus priority... As I can often verify it, gear won't replace a solid experience.

Yesterday I saw this post, set the shutter to release priority before the night show, equiped my big Īss 24-70, and.... SHARPNESS, sharpness everywhere. I took 500 photos as always during 2 hours telling myself that I'll be compelled with throwing 85% as usual but 85% of my pictures where focused, I could achieve quick focus locks with so little light, that I could finally stop worrying about focus and start composition work, so good, soo so good.

**Warning, what follows needs further testing and knowledge to be confirmed, these informations come from my experience which is way to small to be an assertion.** Then I used the FA 50mm and I struggled as usual (in low light only) to get an accurate focus. I checked every single photo I took with this lens yesterday and I only used cross type sensors to focus, in AFS SEL with one movable dot on static actors, **BUT** I never tried to use only the center sensor which I realise would have been a good check. In a few days, I'll have to shoot an event in a probably low and / or crappy light, I'll try to use different sensors while shooting fast and still on non moving actors, and see if I can point a systematic behaviour of the body coupled with the FA 50mm. It was a calibration problem

It may be important to add that I was never allowed to use AF light assist during shows for obvious reasons.

Kiowa is not really far from my actual weight, they are trully beautiful creatures, very expressive eyes, sometimes two different colors in the same eye, I'd really like to see 50 dogs playing in the snow ! But I bet this joy comes with a lot of work to take care of them, those beings are the most loyal on this planet. It promises a lot of other nice pictures !

Rookie photographer here, learning with a Fuji XM1 for 4 months, more black and white oriented. I own a few old Pentax lenses, I'm very excited about the K-1 possibilities !

I've just discovered the post production contest and it seems to be a wonderful way to share an interpretation of a picture, it is a great way so as to improve ourselves, in my opinion.

There are tons of useful informations on this forum, I'm glad to join !
