Forum: Pentax K-1 & K-1 II

I never noticed a focus problem with my canon, nor my 1st K-1 body other than my sigma 24-70, which I chalked up to a poor rendition of the lens.
However with my second K-1 body, I was noticing none of my lenses were focusing right, so I bought lens align to help me fine tune things. With the alignment my shots are much better.
As for the expectation question: I knew when switching from Canon the AF wasn't going to track a moving target as well. But I was expecting accuracy and consistency especially with portrait work.

Thus far its been an objective post. Being an ex Canon user, I knew I was giving some things up. But I was gaining as well. But I haven't formed an overall conclusion yet.

Ok, I have lens tested all the lenses I use on the K1 and here are the results for AF Adjust (with 1.2 firmware):
-Sigma 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 EX DG, +5, Almost no shot deviation
-Sigma DF EX Aspherical 28-70mm F2.8, -2 Almost no shot deviation (This was beyond +10 on my first body, but less scientific)
-Tamron SP AF 70-200mm F2.8 Di LD [IF] Macro (A001), -10 with mild shot deviation. *** this is still -120 front focused at -10. assuming the line is linear it would be -13 if Pentax adjusted to 20 like their competition. This is disappointing since it was extremely sharp at 0 with my first K1.
-Sigma EX APO 100-300mm F4 IF, -10 with increasing deviation over Tamron, at -10AF adjust it is still -50 front focused. Assuming linear line it would be in focus at -11.
-Takumar-F 28-80 f3.5/4.5, -2 with no deviation. What is odd on this one is -1,0,+1 AF adjust all yielded -100 front focus and limited deviation.
-smc PENTAX-D FA Macro 100mm F2.8 WR, -5 with massive deviation. see attached. I love this lens when its focused. This explains why I have to stop down so much to get good results.
My conclusion: their AF system needs work. I am wondering if you are getting the same problems with you FA* lenses Tom as I am having with this macro.
It is too bad on the lack of open mindedness. I didn't post anything about my grip problems because I thought it cause nothing but backlash too. Which is also what Tony Thorpe got on his first review of the K-1. Its still a great camera and got a lot going for it. I do feel disappointed having taking the plunge into Pentax and K1 and selling off all my Canon. Not making a decision yet on the move and hoping Ricoh can correct some of these issues.

I am on my second K-1 because the grip loosened so much. You could literally move the IR sensor in the front and it would click. My new body is beginning to exhibit the same but I am trying not to hold it too tight so it lasts another month.
Just got FocusTune, waiting for a binary update to use. I have been shooting down some apatures to compensate for some focus issues. Hopefully its just a little fine tuning and not what Tom is experiencing.

I was not of my right mind when I posted that. I didn't realize the PEF were crop mode and the DNG were FF.

It took a lot of research to convince me. After so long with Canon. I do miss the autofocus of the 7d mkii and slightly miss the 11fps raw. I don't miss the poor color depth and all the other things K-1 does or does better.
So far I am happy with the switch and convinced it was the right move.
One area I am concerned with and didn't expect to be is build quality. I am on my second K-1 as of today. something in the grip loosened ands started clicking. Thank goodness I bought local.
Loosing Gretzky was much harder.

Thank you!!!!
I have completed my migration to Pentax. In the short period of time, with an extra $1000, the advise in this post and the vast information on this site, (as well as some luck and friends) I have amassed the following:
- K-1
- K-10d
- PZ-1
- Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 EX DG
- Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG
- Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di
- Sigma 100-300 f/4 EX DG
- Sigma 1.4x TC EX DG (on its way)
- SMC Pentax-DFA 100mm f/2.8 Macro WR
- SMC Pentax-DA AL 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
- SMC Pentax-FA 28-80mm f/3.5-4.7
- SMC Pentax-FA 28-90mm f/3.5-5.6
- SMC Pentax-FA 70-200mm f/4-5.6
- Pentax AF360FGZ Flash (Broken Door)
What I gave up:
-Canon 7d Mark ii
-Canon 30d
-Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM
-Canon 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM
-Sigma 17-70mm f/4.5-5.6
-Canon 18-135mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM
-Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro
-Canon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 IS
-Canon 430ex Flash
-$1000 USD
I think I did fairly well. Now its time to take some shots.

I messed up. I had some crop photos that were 23-26mb. They seem rather large for 16 megapixel. Sorry for the confusion I may have caused.

Thanks for this. What I was finding was that LR was ignoring the xmp even though they were newer. I even tried Syncing the folder.

FRV is fine. Its lightroom that seems to insist on only updating DNG and ignore sidecars once its been edited in LR. Its odd behavior I haven't seen before in Canon.
