K200D "image not recorded"

Firstly my apologies for this late response. The forum seemed to be having problems over the weekend and then life and weather took over. Thanks for your your comments which I will try to address:

Yes!

No. Hardly ever shoot RAW. Usually just JPG but most recently this happened when I switched to RAW (not RAW+)

I always have the review On but never sort back to review pictures while the camera is writing. I didn't know I could.

My batteries tend to stay in the camera for long periods as I am not a daily user. I don't recall this happening with fresh batteries.

Yes. My nice 8GB Sandisc Ultra delaminated in the camera and needed some digging out. I've had the non-write problem with Lexar and Dick Smith brand SDs

I always reformat on the camera and have never remotely approached filling a card.

Good point

Yes, generally when firing off several shots. I have ended up with a corrupted card and lost the lot and have also been lucky enough to only lose the last few shots when the problem became apparent. I keep a spare card handy now as it has happened too often. Change card, all's good again.

QuoteQuote:

Based on my experiences of having this happen a number of times, I suspect that this is a problem of a voltage drop occurring while the camera
is trying to write to the camera, or perhaps it's just some kind of timing bug where the CPU can't manage too many simultaneous tasks.

To mitigate this I turned off instant display and started shooting RAW instead of shooting RAW+ ( to reduce the time the camera had to spend writing to the card ).
I tried to avoid fragmenting the SD card - I'd try to shoot till a card was full and then format it before using it again ( on the theory that it takes longer to write
to a fragmented card than a freshly formatted one ).

I tried to avoid chimping until I saw that the camera was done writing to the card. If I ever saw the dreaded error message, I'd just swap out the memory card to make sure I didn't further corrupt the photos on the card.

I tried getting a better card - a Sandisk Ultra didn't help ( vs the original Lexar cards I was using ). After several years of living with these sporatic memory card errors, I tried a Sandisk Extreme card, the problem seemed to
go away completely. I'm using a K30 now so I don't have that much recent experience using the K200D with these better cards. I don't think I ever used anything higher than 8G on the K200D.
I'm not sure - there may be an upper limit on the size of the card the K200D can use - I know someone who had trouble using a 32G card IIRC.

So my first recommendation would be: If you're using a cheap card, go to a decent quality card like Sandisk Extreme of modest size ( and beware of fakes ).

If the problem persists with the better card, then try some of the other approaches like:

a) Format SD cards rather than deleting files/folders
b) Don't chimp until the camera is done writing to the card ( especially after taking multiple shots )
c) clean contacts and/or replace/recondition old rechargeable batteries
d) Not shooting RAW+

I hope this helps.

All good advice and I will be shopping for a Sandisk Extreme of 8 or 16GB and hoping it's not a fake. The SandiscUltra that fell apart in the camera came from the camera shop I bought the camera. Fake? Who knows...... but I hope it is unusual for any card to split open in the camera.

I appreciate your advice and observations. I've certainly got some areas to change my habits and maybe control this annoyance.

I must have got the update some years back and forgotten about it. The problem is more recent.

Here in Oz I don't think cold weather is associated with my problem. Not today anyway. If it happens again I will try your shut-off routine. As far as I remember once this has happened I can't wake up the SD card without reformatting. Today I didn't try as I was more concerned that I might have lost some previous photos and did not want to stress out the card before downloading.

I just checked and already have the firmware update.

I immediately zoned in on your suggestion of old batteries. The Eneloops always last a very long time. I am an intermittent user so it is months (no idea how many.....6?) since I changed them. Likely they were due to die. Another detail: when starting on a "new" set of Eneloops the display invariably shows them as half-charged. Take a few pics and on/off a couple of times and they show fully charged from then on.
SD contacts seem clean but I will check the camera contacts. Thanks for the suggestions.
As for firmware update.......I think I never have. Oops........

Three or four times over the last year or so my K200 has malfunctioned in a mysterious way and did it again today. Having taken a picture the review lingers longer than usual and the orange “thinking about it” light on the back glows for several seconds before going out and then this message on the screen: “image not recorded”. And nor is it. From then on all attempts at taking an image have the same result. When downloading the images have a file name on the card but zero bytes. Previous pictures are fine. This has happened with various SD cards so I do not think that is the problem. I noticed today while this was happening that the batteries seemed to be under pressure and quickly failed. New batteries did not fix the problem. A different card and fresh batteries: all good again. Formatted the old SD and works fine. Is this a known problem? Is my camera just getting old and on its way to camera heaven? Hope not as I love my 200D very much!
Thanks for listening.

Is it true - I cannot enter this competition because I do not have a Twitter or Facebook account? I have neither of these on principle - mainly because I see no advantage for me to do so and of course the privacy issue. I am sad that Pentax Forum has been sucked into this issue. Is it now mandatory to have either or both of these accounts?. Silly beyond words. Exasperated and sad.

Can flash unit damage DSLR?

Up until now I have only used the built-in flash in my K200D. Thinking about buying an external. Apparently flashes can have either or both of High Voltage or Low Voltage triggers - whatever that means. Sounds like it might be important as apparently installing a HV flash on some new digital cameras can actually damage the camera. Does anyone have some knowledge about this? How can one tell whether HV or LV trigger and is there any truth in the damage risk? Obviously any Pentax flash would be fine but how about OEMs?
Thanks,
Pete

Pros Accurate exposures, fast autofocus. Simple controls. Cons It died Rating 5 Price (U.S. Dollars) $300 Years Owned 14

I can recommend this camera: Yes

Value, Features, Performance & Size
I was unlucky. Turned out to be my worst value camera ever. It was my first autofocus camera and I loved using it. It was my first Pentax with a bulging battery grip for the shutter hand - a great feeling of security. I found the flash strong and the red light that enabled night time autofocus was mightily useful. After its failure I was forced to return to my Spotmatic and I was confident that even if the battery died I would still be able to take acceptable pictures.

Camera Review
Like Gruffnutz I moved from Spotmatic the SFXn to K200D. The Spotmatic is unbreakable (years of semi-pro daily beach use, changing film in all weathers etc) and I reverted back to it when the SFX just died. Simply no life in the screen and no functions. ( I did not use the SFX on the beach) I never had it repaired as it was going to cost $90 just to look inside. At the time I was very disappointed: it was a lot of money (for me) and as I had not had it long I felt ripped off. I had bought it SH. My only sad experience with the brand. It is on my knee as I write - can't throw it. Wot to do with a dead electronic camera? Anybody want it?

How to remove a stuck M42 - K-mount adapter

My mount adaptor (Pentax part #30120) came without a removal tool. The instructions say to use a ball point pen to depress the spring and turn the adaptor. I found that this was clumsy and i felt at risk of poking the innards as you say, so I have learned to simply use my thumbnail to release the spring and and rotate the adaptor with index finger against thumb. The ada ptor stays in control all the time and there is no risk of damage. Hope this is relevant.
Cheers,
Pete

K-5: 16MP, ISO25600 and 7 FPS worth the upgrade?

16 MP sounds brilliant. But if the sensor is still the same size are we not just squeezing more pixels onto it which does not necessarily mean a sharper picture. Did I read a discussion somewhere about more pixels=more noise? I think one of the later Canikons has been criticised for this.

Battery for K-x (and other cameras that take AA's)

To all you in Australia with an accessible Aldi: yesterday for the princely sum of $7.95 (marked down from $10.00) I bought a battery charger that seems to fit the bill and obey the most important criteria as discussed in this sticky. It has 4 stations for AA and can charge 1 to 4 at a time. It has a discharge facility and also test. It is not a quick charger but comes with a guide to charge times. It is not "smart" in the sense of auto cut-off but has already resurrected a set of 4 NiMH that my previous "smart" charger would not look at. It does not have an LED read-out to show voltage, simply a green LED to show on test that the battery is charged. I have a separate voltmeter so I'm happy. The rescued set of AAs all show identical charge, so I am happy with that too. The charger comes under the label "ULTRACELL" which is the Aldi rechargeable NiMH series. I have not tried Ulteacell in my K200 as I am totally satisfied with my 2 sets of Eneloop. Hope this is of interest to someone!

You are quite right - that recreates the effect precisely. I'm sure I'd have noticed if the door had been open. I'd say it wasn't, but the effect is spot on.

Hi Jules: They were in fact Eneloops, with about 400 pics on the clock since last charge. Since then another 150 or so pics and camera still shows fully charged. I wonder if Jonathan Mac's suggestion might be close. Hoping it's a once off whatever the cause.

Last week while on holiday I switched the camera on and the LCD very briefly showed its knowledge before going blank. The camera failed to wake up. Every time I switched on was the same. I took out a battery and reinserted - same. Gave up on the photo and sat glumly in the car fiddling with every conceivable combination. Took out the memory card and reinserted and back to normal. Phew! Anyone had a similar experience or explanation?

I had never given it much thought but from now I will make certain to avoid it being "on". Not worth the risk. For me not easy to repair or replace, besides that, I like to look after my gear. It's good gear.

Good price. Last time I looked a pack of 4 Energizer Lithium was about $20 over here (Australia) Eneloops about $24 and lots of recharges. My K200 came with a set of Energizers which were good but I reckon that I get as many shots from Eneloops. Didn't get 1200 though. Bigger the file, fewer the shots?
