Darktable 2.6 is out

Hello fellow Pentaxians!

Had a question about tethering Darktable with pentax 645z in Windows 10. I used the Zadig tool to install the winusb driver and in Darktube a new tethering session will open. But I lose function of the camera, no buttons including the shutter will not respond.
In the camera menu USB option. I tried to use both PTP and Mass storage option but no luck. Any advice from you folks on how to over come this?

Also is there a way to setup a hot folder or a watch folder in Darktable for Windows.

Cheers!

New 645z in 2018?

I do mainly fashion and product photography and am quite happy with the 645z system. Yes newer faster LENS with SR is a MUST!! And faster AF with more AF points does not hurt either. I have worked with mirrorless systems with battery grip and but for prolonged photoshoots lasting over 6 hours or more the ergonomics on the mirrorless systems is pretty dreadful. Maybe I am old school but for professions needs a DSLR has to have the form and function that works and not gimmicks like making a camera "smaller". I really do hope that Pentax will come out with a new body and lenses, I will be the first in line to get one.

645z and High Speed Sync?

Hi Goreturist may I ask what version of Cactus V6 II are you using? Is it for the Canon or Nikon? I am considering getting them as backup triggers to my Acons r930p.

Thanks.

645z and High Speed Sync?

Hey Goreturist,

That is great new for all 645z users 2 different triggers the ACON and the Cactus v6 II both working with the pentax to get past 1/125th.

Do you think that the Cactus will be able to trigger a studio strobe (using cable) instead of a flash mounted on it? And with the Metz flash/Cactus how fast were you able to go up with the shutter speed?

With the ACON r930p I am able to get all they way to 1/4000th with much issues. Would love to hear from you.

Cheers!

645z and High Speed Sync?

Here is an update for anyone considering the Acon r930p wireless system to get HSS or High Shutter Sync or Hi Sync (whatever the proper term is lol!) with the pentax 645z and studio Strobes (l used Speedotron 103 heads).

Very happy to share the news that it works all the way to 4000/s with very little or no gradient and or banding. Totally usable with oudoors shoot.

All you need to do is ask the Acon support for a special firmware they have created to be used with 645z and studio storbes.

If anyone has any questions just PM me.

Cheers!

Hi Gedra,

I have used the Acon r930p transmitter/receiver and it works with my studio storbes I get sync speed up to 4000/s with very little gradation and or banding.

Should you decide to get the system, you will need to ask the folks at Acon to send you a special firmware they made to work with the Pentax 645z and studio storbes.

If you need help message me and I will be happy to help.

Portable Strobe Options for the Z. TTL?

Gedra what kind of strobe do you have? Because it all depends on the flash bulb duration or to be more exact the t.5 value. For example the expensive Priolite strobes has t.5 value of 200th/sec, their flash blub stays lit long enough for the 645z shutter to travel across the sensor at amu given shutter speed without banding. Other storbes may not have a long enough flash duration to achieve HSS for all shutter speeds.

I have yet to receive my Acon r930p although I ordered them almost a month ago, but when they do come in I will be able to test them out with different strobe systems to see what kind of shutter values I can on the 645z.

Portable Strobe Options for the Z. TTL?

I doubt that pro photo will include P TTL anytime soon, at least not because of the 645z (cause of low volume) but maybe if the new K1 takes off in sales, in which case they may consider it.

It is Ricoh Imaging's responsibility to unlock the HSS feature from the default 125th/s to higher levels when non Pentax flashes/triggers or systems are detected by the camera.

This can easily be fixed by a simple firmware update and unlocking this threshold sync speed, and in which case HSS may be achieved by any studio strobe or light systems that has a long flash duration like the prophoto, broncolor etc.....

All of the 645z/d and the K line users should send Ricoh Pentax an email demanding this.

I hope to be getting my Acon R930 soon and then I can experiment with some strobe systems and post the results for the max sync speeds achieved for the 645z community.

There may be a solution to the Pentax 645z and HSS.

Thanks to Cesar Campos (aslo in facebook Cesar Campos Photography) who posted this video in youtube

You Tube

The idea is to take a pair of Acon R930 ($120 US approx) which supports PTTL and when attached to the Pentax 645z hotshoe (transmitter unit) the camera allows you get past the dreaded 125/s shutter speed and activates the HSS function.

On the receiving Acon unit the HSS signals are sent from the camera Acon unit and also there is also a port (receiving unit) that can be connected via cable to a portable studio strobe/flash of choice (usually the ones with very long flash burst duration) like Speedotron Force 10 or 103, Elinchrom ranger with S head, Jinbei HD 600 (very affordable) etc.....

I just ordered my Acon triggers and will get them in a few week and will try out with different portable studio strobes. Will post the results on this forum on the max shutter speed I could get out of the 645z without any banding. Wish I could afford the Priolite's but at the moment there are too expensive as an option.

645z and High Speed Sync?

Hello everyone!

Was eagerly reading this thread to see if a solution for High Speed Sync on the 645z can be found using more than just flash units but via strobes with long flash durations (Elinchrom S strobes, Speedotron force 10 or 103's, Prophoto, Einsteins etc...).

If the acon r930 is achieving HSS with the 645z using pentax/metz flash units (the 645z detects the acon trans-sending unit as a PTTL flash when attached to the hotshoe and allowing the camera shutter speed to go beyond 125th).

In that case would attaching any other HSS transmitter systems, like cactus/odin/indra/jinbei hd 600 etc..... on top of the acon receiving unit (instead of metz/pentax flash) trigger the HSS functionality of these other systems as well?

My understanding was that any non PTTL devices on top of the 645z automatically makes the camera restrict the max sync shutter speed to 125th, except for the acon r930.

And yes I do know about the priolites but they are an expensive proposition for me right now.

I would love to get any feedback from the group.

Cheers to all!

645z with 120 F4 Macro: Manual or Auto Focus?

Hey Paulster,

I forgot about the rental option, but I have already placed orders the 120 macro(s) both the A/FA (found an extremely affordable A version). It was a bit more than what I was planning to spend but I think it will be worth it as I do not often use tripods for portraits.

Wish I could get the 90 macro, it would be a dream to own one, but my financial reality will not allow me lol! I will probably rent the 150 f2.8 and perhaps the 200 f4 (getting mixed reviews) as well once I get the macro(s) and then compare the results.

645z with 120 F4 Macro: Manual or Auto Focus?

Hello everyone!

I am considering getting the 120 Macro for my 645z. This will be for mixed use, portraits and occasional jewelry photography (I shoot tethered for objects).

My question to the group is: Would the manual focus variant be too difficult for hand held portraits and or for the occasional tethered focus/image stacking? Or Should I get the Auto Focus version? Assuming that there is no difference in the image quality between them.

Would really appreciate for any advice I can get.

Cheers!
