Lens Hood and IQ

No filters used on the lens. My thought is if the lighting had changed that much, why wouldn't the aperture or shutter speed have changed. To my eye the lighting was identical in both shots and evidently the camera thought the lighting was the same also.

Actually the sun was the same. Look at the corner near the roof of the porch. The shadow shows there just everything is much darker in the entire photo. I took three different scenes this morning all are considerably darker with the hood in place.

Did some testing today. First photo, no hood. Second photo with hood. The lens hood definitely makes my photos darker when in place. This is a Pentax hood that came with the lens. I shot these with the lens wide open which is not the sweet spot for any lens. I thought it might show the most dramatic results. I see little difference in IQ with or without the hood. Just the hood makes for darker exposures even though the aperture and shutter speeds were equal.

That is my next move. Set up my tripod and do some testing. I'm hoping the camera caught more haze than my eyes detected.

Here is an example. Many of my photos look more like paintings than photographs. Closer shots are better quality, but landscapes all look like this one.

I purchased a Pentax 18-135 lens a few months back for my K-x. I've used it a good bit and really like the IQ. But, I never really used the lens hood any amount. I took a recent trip and used the lens extensively with the lens hood attached to protect the lens. I uploaded my photos to my computer and they lack the sharpness I'm used to with this lens. Any way the lens hood could cause a lack of IQ. I'm thinking not, but this has me baffled.

Mine was a Kodak DC210 Plus. I bought it to take photos of items to sell on eBay. This was in about 1997 and I'm still selling everyday and using the same camera 20 years later.

I bought my first DSLR in 2014 a K200D and then a Kx in 2015. I love both my dinosaur Pentax DSLR's.

Air Quality Effects on Landscape Photo IQ

Thanks to you all for your insight. I assumed I was on the right track considering air quality. I'll try my polarizing filter and see if it helps. Waiting for a truly clear day here may not be an option.

I did read a comment on this forum the other day about trees looking OOF in photos due to the leaves blowing in the wind. Something I never thought about. This forum is a great learning tool.

Air Quality Effects on Landscape Photo IQ

I live in Ohio and air quality is not the greatest. Most of my landscape shots have a somewhat hazy look to them. I use a tripod or monopod for most of my shots. Shorter distance photos always look good, but most landscapes don't live up to my expectations.

I've noticed that most shots I see taken in states with less human habitation, like in the western U.S., all seem much clearer than shots I take here in Ohio. Could air quality (clarity) be part of my poor IQ on landscapes? Any ideas?

I love the photos on this thread. How many times can a guy photograph a cougar in the wild, exceptional experience. The bird photos always make me strive to be better with my mediocre equipment. I shot a few ducks today at the local park. These are all with my K-x and my DA 55-300. Some day I hope to get good at this.

Pretty nice Osprey shots NS Sailor.

The lighting yesterday was less than ideal. And I didn't expect this lens to be as sharp as my DA 55-300 that usually lives on my Kx. I'll put this lens through the paces for a while and see what she will do. I was looking for a walkaround "snapshot" lens. This may fit the bill, if not I'm not out much.

I just purchased a used 18-200 XR zoom lens. This is an earlier model that is in great condition. I took a few sample shots today, all handheld. Fairly decent performance, but a bit soft IMO. What do you folks think of these results.

K-x to K-30 Upgrade Questions

Thanks for the insight Brian. I've considered a Macro lens for quite a while. Closing the distance is where I, personally, have a major concern. I am physically challenged, having the use of only one arm. This is the reason most of my shots are from a tripod. Getting good handheld shots is tough for me to do. This is the main reason I opted for the 55-300 lens.

Great job mgvh. I rarely make a print bigger than 8 X 10. And these prints are just for a yearly calendar to hang in my at home office.

I feel now if I made an upgrade, maybe something like the K-3 would be the way to go. I'll have to do some research before I do anything. I like my K-x a lot though. I never use LV and seldom use AF. I'm not much for bells and whistles, just something that performs well.

I rarely use ISO higher than 400 and most times my ISO is set at Auto 100-200 on my K-x. Almost all my shots are taken in daylight, and many from a tripod. I'm happy with my K-x and my K200D, but like most always wanting, maybe not needing, something more. I'm achieving photos like this with my K-x and my DA 55-300.

K-x to K-30 Upgrade Questions

If I upgrade from my K-x to a K-30 will I gain a large amount? Also will all my DA lenses work the same way on the K-30, meaning will the screw drive DA's be compatible with the K-30? I now own a DA 18-55 II. a DA 50-200 and a DA 55-300.

I shoot mostly from a tripod, but do shoot handheld at times. Dragonflies are my favorite subjects in the summer and waterfowl in the winter. I use manual focus much more than AF.

That looks like Kepler Cascades. I took a few photos there last September. But, I agree with Apet-Sure, it looks like a painting for some reason.
