Improving battery life on K-1

This seems like a crazy low number of shots. You should be getting more like 1000 per charge.

The only 2 things that would explain this are:

1. Having the LCD screen on for an inordinate amount of time (i.e. many hours reviewing photos or in live view)
2. A defective / dead / knockoff battery.

The minor settings like GPS, IBIS, and AF choices are not going to cut your battery life by 90%.

Berlin, Prague, or Dresden?

Dresden is not that interesting IMO. There are a few nice courtyards that have been rebuilt but it would be very far down my list of top European cities to visit.

Berlin is a cool city but for a single day it would be tough since it’s sort of spread out.

Never been to Prague but I agree with others that would be my choice.

K-1 LCD Screen

I’m going to go against the grain and say it’s a little stupid.

I do occasional tilt the screen up or down (e.g. for an overhead shot) but I have NEVER tilted it side-to-side. It barely goes to the sides anyway. And why in the world would you want to rotate it? In my opinion the whole thing is needlessly fussy, and if you look inside it actually takes up a lot of space. I am also a little worried about how fragile it looks, although I do recall that demo where a Pentax rep swung the camera holding only the LCD so it’s probably not a big deal.

I would rather have a simpler tilting mechanism like on the KP or 645Z and have the body be 1/4” thinner. Or just nothing at all and get even more space back.

K-1 switching from DNG to PEF

I think the free Adobe Bridge includes their RAW converter, if you don’t already have Lightroom or Photoshop. Or you could always download a trial of Lightroom, which will definitely bulk convert to DNG if you want.

Is there any reason not to use the DNG format? That’s what I have my K-1 set to. As far as I know there isn’t any difference in size or performance with DNG, and it’s practically universally supported. With camera-specific RAW formats I would worry about losing access to the files in 10 or 20 years (especially with Pentax being such a niche player).

If you’ve already gone through what others have said and are sure you’re doing it right: a lot of times threaded parts are assembled with Loctite (basically glue). Sometimes there is a little bit of telltale blue around the screws.

Try heating the head up a bit with a hairdryer, that will soften the loctite. If you have an impact wrench, this would be the time to use it.

K-1 Scale Factors - Arcseconds per pixel for several lenses
Posted By ajack
Replies: 5
Lens field of view is published for most (all?) lenses. It's listed in the PF lens database, for example. It's also trivial to calculate with a little trigonometry: horizontal field of view = 2*atan(18/ f) for full frame, 2*atan(14/f). You can use horizontal, vertical, or diagonal FOV, you just need to use the corresponding pixel dimensions.

Not that there's anything wrong with your process, it just seems like a lot more work than necessary.

K-1 Scale Factors - Arcseconds per pixel for several lenses

Is it not as simple as just lens field of view divided by the pixel resolution of the sensor? E.g. a lens with 20 ° horizontal field of view on a K-1 (horizontal resolution of 7360px) would have a measurement of 9.8 ″/px. With the caveat that there is some variation due to the sensor being flat (not spherical) and also that lenses are not perfect. But that should be the average.

DAM on Mac, goodbye Aperture?

I completely forgot to mention Adobe Bridge, which is FREE. You might want to check it out. It's really more of a file management tool than an editor, although you can do basic RAW editing like white balance and exposure. It's mainly centered around organizing photos, cataloging, metadata, etc. The nice thing about Bridge is that it works with the files as-is on your computer, it doesn't need to IMPORT them into some proprietary library.

You would probably want to use it in conjunction with a real photo editor (e.g. Acorn, Pixelmator, Affinity, GIMP, or of course Photoshop).

Apple's Photos app does support some of these adjustments. You can do white balance, exposure, and levels (per channel if you want) in the current version, and the upcoming High Sierra release adds a more traditional curves editor. There is also support for local editing if you want to retouch a blemish or something. No I am not claiming it is the same as Lightroom or Photoshop so depending on much editing you do it may not work. You can always edit a photo in an external editor like Pixelmator if you want to go in depth on a few of your photos. If you are a professional photographer and rely on retouching photos in bulk it will certainly not cut it.

I would never claim that Photos is a great app for professionals, but for anyone coming from Aperture I think it's worth at least looking at since it's free and will load your Aperture library without losing all your work.

For anyone using Aperture the obvious thing to try first is Apple's Photos app. No it's not as good as Aperture was, but it's free and will import your library without any fuss. No need to redo all your edits, recategorize, etc. Depending on how much work you've done curating your photos, switching to another program could mean a HUGE loss of work.

The Photos app is not that great but it does do raw support, non-destructive editing, basic cataloging like Albums and Keywords, etc. There are a bunch of improvements coming this fall in the next version of Mac OS ("High Sierra"), including more editing tools and better support for external editors if you want to tweak a photo more.

I would say start with Photos and see if it meets you needs.

Wide Angle Prime for FF

There are the FA 31mm Limited and FA 35mm, although it sounds like what you really want is "ultra wide". If you are willing to go used (and manual) there are tons of older options from the Pentax back catalog.

What is Jpeg Quality ?

It's not a measure of anything. It's just an arbitrary unitless scale. Not every program uses the same 0-100 scale (e.g. some are 0-10), and 80 in one program does not mean the same thing as 80 in another.

K-5 battery charger adapter for Caribbean travel

Just to elaborate on what robski said, the Pentax charger is capable of handling any type of power source. The only thing you need is a physical adapter to let you plug your 2-blade US cable into a 2-pin European outlet. Some like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0036VJ1OQ/

Note that you should not use such an adapter with a device that only works with 120V, e.g. a lamp or something with a motor. But the vast majority of electronics will work. Always read the label on the device to be sure, it is usually printed as "Input".

31 limited, Sigma 35 1.4 or 24-70 for the first lens on K-1

Well there's no question that the 24-70 is more versatile in more situations. Nobody can answer the prime vs zoom debate for you. I'm just saying if you know that you prefer a single wide prime then I don't see why moving to FF should change that.

On a personal note: I have the 31 Limited and the D FA 24-70 (among others) and I can tell you I have the 24-70 on my K-1 at least 80% of the time. I don't care about size/weight and I don't care about losing the ultra-large apertures. I DO care about the weather sealing, the flexibility of the zoom range, and the autofocus. So for me the choice would be the 24-70.

If you never used your 17-50 on an APS-C camera I don't know why the 24-70 is really a contender for your first (and presumably, only) K-1 lens.

I don't have the Sigma but I do have the other two. The 31mm is *significantly* more compact than the 24-70. They're really totally different sizes. If you care at all about being compact I would not get the 24-70.

FWIW chromatic abberation is not really that big a deal since digital tools do a pretty good job getting rid of it. The focusing is definitely louder and slower than a modern SDM lens like the 24-70, whether that matters to you or not I can't say.

New K1 body or Lenses
Posted By ajack
Replies: 13

It's hard to know what prices will be in the future, especially since they depend in part on currency exchange rates and other oblique factors. The cost of lenses stays pretty constant over time, and it is feasible to buy a lens and keep it for many years. (E.g. the FA Limited 31mm has been in the $900-1100 range for the past 10 years with only brief variation.) The cost of bodies *tends* to fall over time, particularly when a replacement has been released or is imminent. (E.g. the K-3 started around $1200 and over 3 years fell to around $400). But nobody knows if the K-1 will follow Pentax's usual product arc, how long until it is replaced (if it even is replaced), etc. The street price of the K-1 has actually gone UP $200 since release, which to my knowledge has not happened with any other Pentax body.

As for what to buy first:

You can use a new K-1 with all your current lenses (although at least the Sigma you will probably want to use in "crop" mode, negating some of the benefits of full frame.)
You can use a new FA or D FA with your current K-5ii.

So there is not really a right answer to this question.
