New K-50, repaired once replacing the diaphramg control block, still defective?

I would disagree, I am just trying to determine if I have two defective cameras, and have gotten more hatred here than help. Yes, I posted to too many places in my frustration, but the hatred here has been over the top. I guess it is easy to be so on the keyboard.

I am still no closer to an answer than I was when I started. Is it a diaphragm block failure, or is the camera perfect?

Keep your replies to yourself, one camera goes back tomorrow, and I will keep one and work around it or toss it in the trash. What a mistake it was even coming to this forum. I am done. May the future years treat you all well.

Hi Niceshot, yes ......... indeed I have been told time and time again, it is a function of the camera. I had a post up asking if all DSLRs did this, and it was taken down. When it came back from repairs, no change. I now have a second K-50, brand new, from amazon, and it does the exact same thing. I cannot think it should do this. thanks for reply.

New K-50, repaired once replacing the diaphramg control block, still defective?

I did not know one could amend, or add to an original thread. Thanks to all who offered help.

Amazon replaced the camera, which I thought was very nice of them. I guess I will just keep one of the two cameras. Two Pentax representatives were unable to tell me that this was / is expected behavior, One call on the original camera and a second call on the repaired camera. First rep said sent it to repairs, the second rep said the repairs must not have worked, send it back a second time.

A second source of frustration is that Precision Camera for some reason thought that a Diaphramg Control Block was needed, and from my perspective, changed nothing.

I just thought that in the digital world a properly exposed picture say at ISO 100, 1/60 and F8, would be independent of the framing method. I thought the framing methods were just two different avenues to use to "frame the shot" and that both would return me the same settings. If this is not true, then I can manually adjust the viewfinder and take multiple exposures and hope for the best, or basically just disregard the viewfinder and use Live View all the time.

Thanks for answering the question I posed: "is this standard for all DSLR cameras", and it seems to be yes.

thanks all

Pentax K-50 aperture/Dark pictures

Is there a difference between pictures taken thru the Viewfinder vs Live View? Mine are noticeably darker thru viewfinder, and Live View is fine. I am trying to find out why thru this forum, thru a call to Pentax, and thru a call to Precision Camera who repaired this camera per the direction of Pentax. The repair replaced a diaphragm control block, and did nothing to correct the dark picture issue.

---------- Post added 06-11-16 at 10:07 AM ----------

My pictures were not totally as dark as yours, but I would still be interested to see if Viewfinder vs Live View framing is different, and while you are at it, try one with Viewfinder, only totally cover the viewfinder with your finger or a towel, to prevent light from entering the viewfinder.

Some replies to my post suggest it is just the nature of DSLRs to have some difference, which makes no sense to me. A digital camera should do the same pic when framed thru the viewfinder or live view--or the viewfinder becomes unuseable. If a proper exposure is ISO 100, 1/60 at F8, then it should remain the same for viewfinder and live view-----I thought the two were just two different avenues with which to frame the shot.

Auto setting, shooting a sunlit yard with shade under trees, and bright green sunny grass------this is where it appears most evident-----------shoot one picture with VIEWFINDER then as soon as the camera gives you the next shot, switch to LIVE VIEW and the viewfinder will be noticeably darker than the live view. I think the live view is the most accurate shot.
Does the same with scene mode or manual, viewfinder is noticeably darker than live view.

I have two K-50s doing this and another person has a 3rd. Pentax does not know much, as they instructed me to send my first one back for repairs, which I did, and it did not help.

1. What is defective about these three cameras, OR

2. That there is actually no defect at all, just a characteristics of Pentax DSLRs, or maybe just DSLRs, which is weird. .

I need to send one or both of the K-50s back.

Thanks.

See my post in troubleshooting, and a post in k-30/50 forum. I have two new K-50s and his K-50 are all three giving us different exposures on the exact same picture taken thru viewfinder [dark picture] and then a fraction of a second later thru the viewfinder---which will be fine.

Three bad K-50s with the same error? Viewfinder vs Live View different exposures?

See a post here in K-50 forum, and my posts in Troubleshooting where I included pictures.

Between this gentleman and myself we have three K-50s [ I am in possession of two right now] giving different exposures on the same pic thru viewfinder vs live view.

Is this possibly correct, or do we have three defective cameras?

K-50 Live View vs Viewfinder (Viewfinder photos Under exposed)

Just saw this, sorry for the delay. Repairs replaced a Diaphramg control block, their spelling, and it is no better. Amazon overnighted me a new K-50 and it is doing the same thing. Pentax did not have an answer, but a person responded to my posts and said this:
the parameters change when switching to live view that suggests that it's not the diaphragm block at fault but just a discrepancy between metering through the viewfinder and in live view. This seems to be normal behaviour as certainly my K-r produces brighter images in live view -- I believe it's due to the camera metering off the sensor rather than the prism. The posted pictures don't look typical for aperture block failure either. When my wife's K-x had the aperture problem it would produce vitually completely black frames outdoors unless the sensitivity was cranked way up.

I THINK THE pentax cameras just do this, that it is not an error. If this is desirable or not, well I do know yet know. Seems not.

See my post under troubleshooting with two pictures attached. please reply to this and let me know you saw it. good luck

Short version:
Pentax bought and I discovered that pics thru Viewfinder are much darker than thru Live View. Ran this by Pentax, and they said send for repairs.

Off it went to Precision Camera who replaced a DIAPHRAMG CONTROL BLOCK, their spelling.

Back it came, and it is no better.

Complained to Amazon and they overnighted me a new k-50, that is doing the exact same thing. SEE PICTURES BELOW.

Ran this again by Pentax, and they are sending it on for further review.

Either I have in my hands two defective K-50s---unlikely---, or they are not defective at all, and this is just something/some quirk about DSLR K-50s.

HELP!! I need to send one or both of these K-50s back, soon.

A gentleman said this, and it seems to make sense.
If the parameters change when switching to live view that suggests that it's not the diaphragm block at fault but just a discrepancy between metering through the viewfinder and in live view. Anyway, what I'm saying is it's good to hear that you're getting a replacement camera but don't be surprised if the new body also exposes a little darker through the vf compared to liveview

New K-50, repaired once replacing the diaphramg control block, still defective?

My 60 day old K-50, only 2 days out of warranty started giving me dark pictures thru the viewfinder, and immediately afterwards---as in fractions of a second later, the exact same picture thru Live View would be fine. I noticed that the parameters were changing when I switched between viewfinder and live view, moving nothing, holding the camera steady, and the ISO, or shutter speed, or F stop would change just by switching between viewfinder and live view, done in fractions of a second.

Per Pentax, I sent this to Precision Camera on my $16 dime, they replaced a Diaphramg Control Block [their spelling].

Now it is doing the same thing---dark thru viewfinder, then immediately fine thru the live view. See pictures below.

Am I doing something wrong?

If not, should I endure another repair? Is the diaphragm control block causing this error? I want a different camera, as I suspect something is blowing the diaphragm control block, and it will always blow. I will call Pentax, again, tomorrow morning.

Your thoughts?

K-50 Live View vs Viewfinder (Viewfinder photos Under exposed)

My new k50 showed very dark pictures when taken thru the viewfinder, and then a second later repeat the exact same picture, not even moving the camera, nor more making any adjustment, and view it thru live view and the picture is fine. Auto, scene, or manual, does not matter, dark thru viewfinder, good thru live view. Let camera rest and no change, let it rest some more, and all is fine. Tested again today and fine at first, then back to dark viewfinder pictures. Sent to repairs today, as I had passed my return window. Sucks.

those settings you referenced were auto settings, either in full auto or in scene outdoor. I had not learned how to use manual settings at the time of the picture. full battery charge last night with viewfinder vs LCD errors.

HI Ramseybuckeye, I got frustrated and deleted all pictures, so I have no more.

One thing, I was using auto with viewfinder and LCD, the viewfinder would be black, the LCD fine. Same for several scene shots, and same for several manual settings. I did not change anything except viewfinder vs LCD previews before snapping the pic, and the viewfinder black, the LCD fine. Eventually the camera would not even snap a picture at all, no matter how much I pushed on the shutter. I let it rest, no change. Let it rest some more, now it is fine, and I did not change any settings.

It is also 2 days past returnable from Amazon, I have an email to them, so back to Amazon it goes, or off to Pentax.

I just hope I am not using it properly, but I do not think this is the case.

Now, some 42 minutes later, and no changes in camera settings ......... it is fine, taking great pictures thru viewfinder or using LCD display on the back, auto or scene or manual.

All pictures now good, I and I changed nothing.

I have now noted a time or two it will continue to show the scene thru the LCD viewfinder, even after a picture is taken, it will show the scene in preparation for the next picture to be snapped. I thought it only showed the scene thru the LCD screen one time, and reverted to viewfinder before the next picture?

Also, in manual mode, all shutter speeds sound very slow. Is the sound the same for all shutter speeds? I have not noticed. The camera has sat cooling, but no change, it is a low 70s for us, and we are in the shade. The pic last week, was only one of two taken at the time.

New camera, had it two weeks. Been shooting outside on the deck in various modes, just learning. 75 shots as sun is setting-still very light. Went to manual focus on the lens, MF for manual focus, then when I came back to auto focus, all the pictures are, very very dark. No difference between auto or scene or manual, all very, very dark EXCEPT when I view the picture before I take it on the large LCD viewfinder, then the camera does fine. Go back to viewing thru the eyepiece and snapping the picture, and everything dark! Too dark to even recognize yard run trees. Help

Below is what it did with overcast skies about 2pm one day last week, this is a good bit lighter than what I am seeing now.

Hi all, just got a Pentax K-50, as I was tired of the poor pics of my point and click camera. I exited the camera world a decade or two ago, selling my K-1000 when print film died, and I was a bit above the amateur stage at that time. I seem to have forgotten most of what I knew at the time. I hear that happens past 60.

I am retired, a lover of all things dogs, especially small terriers, a hiker and acoustic musician. I want to do great pics of the outdoors, and of my wife and pup as we travel around the southern USA.

My efforts with the camera have been so far encouraging, with a couple of questions.

1. I took a pic of a civil war house under cloudy skies, with auto setting, and could not get anything except a picture that was very dark, as in past dusk dark. It was ripping hot outside, with a pup in the car, so I did not stay long enough to see what was wrong.

2. On the occasional dark situation, house with shades closed, [puppy sleeping on the bed] and using the auto function, I cannot get it to take a picture no matter what I do, it simply will not release the shutter. What gives?

3. Will this do a movie and specifically, give good enough sound for me to use to post my huge guitar talents :lol:on youtube? I tried a movie with sound at 5, then a second with sound at 3, and both had a large amount of hiss in the background--it seemed that the mic was searching for sound in a quiet room, or maybe it was picking up internal sounds of the camera itself.

Many thanks, I hope to spend many hours reading questions and answers on this forum,
