Thanks for the food for thought! It took more than a decade for me to really figure out what I like taking pictures of, and how, as opposed to try to mimic what's I imagine a postcard would look like, and I've really enjoyed what comes out a lot more as the evolution progresses. I think you've summarized it more succinctly.

Are you sure your video card is dead?
If it is, and you just want a quick fix at $150 - RX 560 and RX460 can be had in that price range. I see a lot of RX 560s (I bought it during the bitcoin craze to upgrade a similar video card, and I play video games!) It uses less power than your current one and would be a sizeable upgrade. With the bitcoin crap dying down you should be able to get both used and new ones at competitive prices - I use Newegg.
Your power supply's total peak slowly diminishes over time. No easy thumb rule but just something to keep in mind. A good PSU is $90. As others have said, a good AMD Ryzen system can be had (and you could migrate the video card) for your next computer upgrade, but for $150 an entry level RX 460/560 would be your best bet.

For some people. They're testing the waters on a higher price on certain groups so plenty to see here and prep for. Anecdotal evidence and all that...
Same boat in terms of use - I don't want the stupid online storage and all that jazz, just barebones software to edit stuff with!
What are the popular alternatives out there? I feel like this would be what gets me off the couch to try Capture One (which lets you outright buy it, yes!) but I'm also hearing buzz about Raw Therapee.

Finally motivate me to switch to an AMD Ryzen system with Windows 10 (fairly used to it thanks to work) instead of the overclocked FX-8350 setup I've got going now.

Yes, that's what happened to me as well. Was in denial that I had the problem but it gets worse (which made sense given the nature of the problem) If you're already on a trip, switching to drive mode and bursting out 5-6 shots buys you a dozen working frames till the problem manifests itself again.
If you're able to send your camera in, the pentaxcamerarepair.com that reh321 linked was amazing. He did a fast and quality fix. My K-S2 failed between 12000-15000 or so frames, got fixed, and has gone without a hitch for another 20,000.

It happened to me and was a $100 fix by the gentleman in California. Just budget that in and you should be fine. An otherwise great camera for the price. (In hindsight I should've just sprung for the K-3, but admittedly there have been a few shots i.e wide angle close to water edge where the swivel screen has been clutch)

Well. In case you're here and reading and just about to hit the NorCal part of your trip - Route 1 / PCH is not possible from LA to SF. Big Sur mudslide and bridges out etc. That said, the stretch from Monterey southbound to about the Bixby Bridge or the stretch from Santa Cruz, CA to Pacifica are both gorgeous. The former has the big cliffs and famous bridge, the latter has nicer beaches in my opinion.
I would say the 18-135 is my go to lens, and bring a wide angle for the cool buildings you'll see. I use the 18-135 on a lazy trip up to SF, and 10-20mm when I'm dedicating time for pictures. Point Lobos is a good scenic state park.

Just wondering specific to K-S2 owners, did you go the Pentax route or the pentaxcamerarepair guy when your aperature block problem appeared?
Mine gave a rare dark frame here and there a little after a year of service (shutter count 6000 or so?) but on a pretty long national park hike discovered that my first shots were always dark (11000, 16 months of use), so I dug deep into my limited instincts and tried burst shooting to salvage the trip. Intend to dump money to fix this before it is progressively worse, but don't want to miss out on some upcoming trips with it.
From threads out there it looks like Pentax takes 3-6 weeks and fixes it for sure, on rare occasion for free, while the other guy is $100+ two way shipping and looks like an 80% success rate?
Should have gotten a K-3.

I mostly shoot landscapes and architecture. Unless I'm caught in the rain/cloud or something specific, I use ISO100 about 90% of the time. Sometimes during sunset or in a dimly lit alley type setting I realise I can switch ISO and adjust, but 100 default!
If Elvis rose from the dead and showed up at my local Shell station at 3:am to fill his Cadillac, I'd probably not switch the ISO in time to make the million :(

Haha, looks like you live down the road from me. I kept telling myself I'd get to the cement ship for ages for sunset, then it broke apart :( Nice shot! ---------- Post added 07-05-17 at 01:58 PM ---------- |

I am absolutely drooling over the Ryzen. Currently using an eight core FX-8350 but the potential with this is just incredible. Also gaming.

Thanks for the compliment and the advice! Trying to fix the grain on it kills the sand texture, so I think I'm honestly relieved that there's nothing else I can do.
I scanned all my shots with the Dimage 5400 with maxed out settings into TIFF a few years back and shared them here and there, but finally putting them on Flickr to share in one place. The new (to me) tools that let you recover some highlights and shadows really gives them new life.
It was plain old Fujifilm 200 before I got brave enough to switch to Velvia 50, and now I've switched to the KS-2 DSLR. I thought I had some Fujifilm 100 but bad planning and an empty freezer the day of the trip meant I had to take what I could get at the store - 200 it was! :)

So I have great quality scans of my film shots, but some poor exposures here and there (even with DSLR) have left some noise that seems like it should be easy to remove. I'm playing with Topaz Denoise 6 and trying settings on the Photoshop CC and no real luck.
Examples - White Sands National Monument | White Sands during a storm. | Flickr Waterfall | Aerial shot of waterfall, Molokai Sea Cliffs Tak? | Flickr
The noise doesn't show on a normal view or on prints, i.e if you get out of lightbox mode and in 20x30" print in person it isn't too visible, but a little grating in "lightbox" mode. I tried per channel etc. but it feels like I always overdo it!
Anyone else travel down this road before have tips?
