This is a surprise, thought DSLRs were on the way out.
Curry's moving cameras from the front of our local store to somewhere in the middle seemed to confirm this.

And these green solenoids were definitely in the cameras to begin with?
Cos if they've been bought from ebay then they may have been switched.

I thought about the PLM lens but managed to find a "for parts" K100D on ebay for £25 that still had the white solenoids in
Soldering iron kit was £12, solder was £1 so that worked out a lot cheaper.

You can use the 55-300mm PLM lens but it's pretty expensive.
EDIT: Actually the price has come down a but but it's still £369 in the UK.
There was a time that Japanese companies were different and the person responsible would have quit citing "deep shame".
It's actually not that difficult to repair yourself following the instructions and videos on here but I have a K-5 II as well so it didn't matter quite as much if I messed it up.

Sorry I misread your post, I thought you were saying there wasn't an aperture problem with the K-70 when actually you were saying there was but you think it's been fixed.
K-5 II.
Which is rated best Pentax APS-C camera in low light by DxO.

I don't think it's clear yet whether the K-70 has the aperture problem or not.
Also DxO disagrees with you about the K-30 being better than the K-5 in low light.

Things I'd bear in mind:
The K-70 may also turn out to have the aperture problem, there have been some reports.
The K-5/ K-5 II/ K-5 II S seems to be a slower camera than the K-50 because it uses the older Prime II engine rather than the newer Prime M used in the K-50.
It certainly feels slower to me and there is a longer shutter lag.

I actually knew nothing about that.
Pentax's publicity machine isn't exactly the best is it?
I only found out they'd made an APS-C mirrorless recently!
Apparently this is somewhat like the old K200D, which I would quite like as well, have the K10D but it's pretty heavy and that has the same sensor. ---------- Post added 10-08-18 at 06:48 AM ----------
With madphys' guide and the video I posted it's not that hard but takes a bit of patience and either another pair of hands or one of those "helping hands" things.
You need two hands to hold the wire on the connection and another two with the iron and the solder.

Despite some very amateur soldering I managed to replace the green solenoid with the white one in my K-50 and it seems to be working.
One thing though, K-30, K-50, K-500, K-S1 & K-S2s on eBay, either they have the green solenoid and they will fail, or someone has done what I've done and you're buying a camera that's been soldered by an amateur or even worse, the solenoid has been filed down.
So it's very much buyer beware with those cameras on eBay.

I've got someone who's done a bit of soldering to help but he hasn't worked on anything this small.
Going to follow madphys' guide off here and also the video below which is great for identifying where all the screws are (though not going to do the filling part). You Tube |

If this is the case I wouldn't say "pretty bad" I would say "very bad", the K-70 came out 4 years after the K-30.

The annoying thing was they didn't replace the faulty solenoid after the K-30 and continued using it in the K-50, K-500, K-S1 and K-S2, had probably already bought a load of them in bulk.
The failure rate must be way above average now.
Going to attempt fixing my K-50 at the weekend so wish me good luck! ---------- Post added 10-05-18 at 08:39 AM ----------
People should be aware that some of the old Pentax DSLRs with the white solenoid being sold as "faulty, for parts only" on ebay have already had the solenoids removed.

The GFX 50R does look great, considering selling my other gear and buying it for sure but waiting for the proper reviews.

I think so, there's an oversupply in the market ATM and a couple of manufacturers are going to be squeezed out.
Fuji manufacturing mirrorless medium format cameras was probably the final straw as that killed off Pentax's last niche. ---------- Post added 10-01-18 at 03:24 AM ----------
The smaller the sensor, the sooner they will be replaced by new smartphone camera technology, ordinary compact cameras have been replaced, next will be 1 inch compacts and then it will be M4/3.
The main problem I find is battery life, carrying a camera around with you is one thing but having to take a couple of batteries as well is a PITA.
My smartphone on the other hand, I can use all day on the one charge.
They both use lithium-ion batteries so I don't know why this is the case but I think that it's a real problem.

Only thing announced at Photokina being the GR III, it doesn't look that good really.
Olympus had nothing new either.
Not looking that great for either company TBH, full-frame Mirrorless cameras and Smartphones look to be the future of photography and Pentax/ Ricoh and Olympus do neither.

Where do you solder to though?
Sounds like doing it to the board is not a good idea so you must have to detach the other end which is glued on rather than soldered I gather, so where do you cut the wires?

But don't leave it alone.
Using it regularly seems to be the best way to keep it working properly.
My K-50 got the problem after I didn't use it for a few months, only 2500 shots on it.

So there are actually 4 types of M42 lenses.
Manual, preset, auto/manual and auto and it's preset I want.
Thanks I would have got the wrong one.

Yes I typed that the wrong way round, and was wrong about the K-30 as well that's just as bad.
Someone said it's a bit like rust, after about three years or so you will get it unless perhaps you're using your camera all the time.
Been using my K10D instead but thinking about taking the solenoid out of that and putting it in the K-50, but don't want to end up with two busted cameras so haven't taken the plunge yet (pun intended).

My K-50 was hardly used when it failed, this is not a case of where a weak part wears out, it can go at any time and seems to be a case of when rather than if.
It is more a case of negativity towards Ricoh rather than Pentax though, still got a K10D which is still working (although even that had back-focusing problems to be fair).

More and more people's cameras are failing because of the aperture solenoid problem so I think a lot more people are going to be negative about them.
Pentax entry-level cameras with weather sealing and pentaprism viewfinders seemed like excellent value, it seems less like that now, I'm just glad I bought my K-50 secondhand, if I'd bought it new I'd be really negative!
