It could be. A new used one is about the same in eBay. But I figure I'll take it apart first. Just for the fun of it. ....maybe after I obtain a working copy.

Small update.
I found an old 12in shutter cable release. Tired it to see it it would work...no luck.

So the summary is

Light meter works.
Shutter speed works.
Film wonder works.
Film advance works.
Blinking red light with shutter works.

The shutter still does not work.....I am getting a quote for repair. If it's too high I'll try to disassemble, and worst case I buy a Ebay one.

Unfortunately I feel this will be the same cheaper to buy another than try and fix the old one. Except for the challenge of repairing it myself.

It's an interesting camera. I find the 5-15 isn't that sharp wide open. But pretty good stopped down. I'm happy. Will post some pics after some more fun.

Ok. So here is the update.
Used very little fluid. Right on the shutter release. It moves very smoothly now. But no success. Still will not release the shutter.

I also noticed that after I use the film advance, I don't actually need to push the shutter release to make it fire. I only have to kinda tap/hit/ push in the area generally around the shutter release and it will fire. My guess, is that either I am activating the mechanical shutter by another method, or I am making a electrical contact actually contact.

I'm going to go through the service manual and see what I can find. But my guess is that this is an electrical/ circuit board issue.

Oddly, the light meter and other systems seem to work. Just will not release the shutter.

Unless someone else has an idea. I think I'm left with taking it apart.

Bare in mind, I have tried all the settings in many combinations, different lenses, new batteries, manual, auto, 100x, bulb.

Ok. I added the lighter fluid. Letting it sit for a while. See what happens. Fingers crossed.

I had the scary already. I took off the shutter ring and there was a tiny ball bearing sitting on a spring. Which I promtly dropped..... Luckily found and all out back together, and back to same function as before. Nmi have to jam it hard and it fires. I'll take it apart today.

Either this or try and find another one.

Hmm. I'll take a look where do I out the light fluid. At the shutter release button?

It's very odd. It works. Basically if I hit it on the trigger.

So in my recent gear sorting and purchase of a Pentax q S1 I came across my old program plus.

There were not batteries as I always remove them. Put in a fresh set with a 50mm A series. Meter works. Everything looks normal. I advance the mechanism.
Press shutter, nothing. Tried all the dials opens back. Nothing.

Then I opened the back lifted the rewind and when I pushed it down it fired. Odd.

Tried everything again. Push shutter. Nothing.

In a moment of playing I hit the shutter button rather hard and it fired. Tried again. It fires..

So at the moment if I hit the shutter button hard it will fire. Camera isn't really usable like this. But at least there is life..

Anyone experience this or have idea for repair. My guess is some contacts have corroded. Or oxidized. ....annoying because it's been sitting in storage.

Any help would be appreciated.

...I have the manual and repair manual. Just not sure where to start if the terminals are corroded.

So far happy with the purchase.
It is certainly tiny. I still instinctively bring it to my eye to compose a pic. I think it will be fun....thought already I wish there was a macro. Like everyone else.

I'm going to get the prime and telezoom, then maybe the fisheye. In that order. I've been taking some indoor snaps just playing and I like this camera. I also like that because of having several other pentax it's very familiar.

This will be fun.

Hello all,

So after watching every review I could. I picked up a QS1 with a 5-15 lens old stock for 180$ cdn. Basically I decided that for that price is take the gamble and see if it works for me.

Thanks for all the input.

Interesting stuff everyone. Thank you for the responses.

I stopped in at my local camera store today and got to play with a a few of the contenders.

Pentax Q S1 (used)
Sony a5000
Sony a6100
Fuji XT20.

Without doing a bunch of indepth analysis. The Pentax size can't be beat. It's simply tiny. Actually hard to imagine unless handling one.

The a5000 seemed like a good size, and the a6000 a little bigger. But also not bad.

The Fuji is the largest. But it had the best overall feel to me when using. It might be because I'm used to the K1.

Honestly. I'm torn. Certainly the newer cameras have more features. In real world pics I'm not sure I would be unhappy with any of the camera.

I'm strongly considering the Q7 now as the price is very low even with a lens, and it's apparently the same as the QS1.

Currently. I'm thinking QS1 for the low cost. If not...I'm not sure which of the others I liked the most.

Hello all,

Ive been lurking in the forum again reading every bit of informatiom about the now discontinued q series.

I'll spare the details. But the summary is need a backup for my K1. Not another full size or large camera.

I'm looking at a mirrorless. Somthing smaller. I've got it narrowed down to either the Sony a6500 or Pentax q S1. I've already ruled out the k 01, due to size. Even though it would work with lenses.

Comparison shots from various sources seems to show the Pentax comparable even with a 14mp smaller sensor vs the 24mp 4/3.

I'm honestly torn. We are a Pentax family. Have always been. But with the q series being discontinued.

Is this worth it. Even though its now 3 years old. Or should I bite the bullet and look at another system?

I also can't seem to find information as to why they discontinued the series. Poor sales is my guess.

Allright.

So here is our trial for the next couple weeks. Then revise if necessary.

150-500 Sigma for birding.
10-17 mm pentax fish eye for fun, and for a wide angle at 17mm.
18-250 for walking around.
35-105mm for landscapes.
50mm for portraits.
18-55WR for the rain.

I'm going to try this combo out for the next couple weeks on hikes, and in a shoulder bag. See if we need to reduce or add something.

Thanks for all the input.

The 40 actually would be a good backup. Ilk have to reconsider.

---------- Post added 12-17-16 at 02:14 PM ----------

So I've skimmed the threads for the 35-105. I should probably use it more, considering some of the reviews. I do find it heavy, and unless I'm shooting stationary objects I'm useless for manual focus. Unless shooting on an old ME.
Any tips for this.?

Well we are used to changing lenses. So that's not a problem. But we typically pick one or two for the day depending on the activity and leave the rest.

For example on a hike we might bring the 18-250, the macro and 80-320. But this totally depends on the season. Of there are now flowers the macro tends to stay at home.

Or if birding we might only bring the 150-500 and the 40mm macro.

Or in town maybe the fish eye, and the 18-250, and 50mm.

In Iceland. We have birding, hiking, landscapes, landscapes with people, and some city stuff.....

it covers the whole spectrum.

Well we typically try to do a big trip ever couple years. This will be the first with our little one who is 1 yr old. So very exciting.

Your lens selection is different if only because of only manual focus. Can you explain the stack of primes. To be honest in don't use the 35-105 much.

---------- Post added 12-17-16 at 12:54 PM ----------

Good question. We are not sure we will be able to get the K1 before the trip. Though I'm trying....so let's say for this time. It's for the k5, and it there is some overlap to the K1 that's a bonus.

Thanks. It might be worth a trial at home but....that 150-500 for birds is going to come. Especially because there should be a number of species we have never seen before.

Greetings from Canada,

Long time lurker and decided to finally join.
We are currently planning a trip to iceland and trying to get our camera equipment sorted, without getting overwhelmed.
Long time pentax user. MX,ME,ME SUPER, K100D, K5. Currently saving my pennies for the K1. We shoot wide variety of subjects, and enjoy birding. We are trying to figure out if we need/want a different lens for our trip or should we use what we have. What would your ideal lens combo be?

At my current disposal.
50mm M f1.7
50mm A f1.7
50mm F f1.7
50mm A f2.8 macro
40mm DA f2.8 XS
35-105 A f3.5
28-80mm FA f3.5-4.7
10-17mm DA f3.5-4.5 fish eye
28-90mm FA f3.5-5.6
90mm Sigma F2.8 macro
18-55mm F3.5 WR
100-300mm FA f4.7-5.8
80-320mm FA f4.5-f5.6
18-250mm Sigma f3.5-6.3 macro hsm
150-500mm Sigma f5-6.3

My current thoughts are.
18-250 sigma, 50mm F, 50mm A macro as backup, fish eye, 90mm macro, 150-500 sigma, 40mm XS.18-55 WR

If feels like a lot. I do know, less is more, but we are going along way and will not be going back. So I figure this covers landscapes , if we stitch the 50mm shots. Macro for up close stuff, fish eye for fun, 150-500 for birds, 18-250 for walking around lens, 40mm for Pocket, WR for the rain.......also, gorilla pod, and a tripod.

I have been eyeing the 1.7x adapter for a teleconverter, and the 50mm FA, and the 77mm FA limited. But I haven't picked them up because I think the K1 is probably a better investment.

I would appreciate some input from the forum.

Also, just to note. In the past we have never brought more than 2 or 3 lenses and got on just fine. So...... what would your combo be and why? Also if there is a lens you think would be IDEAL, I'd like to hear why?

Cheers,

Armi101
