That Elusive "3D Pop" Defined
Posted By ehrwien

I find to perceive a kind of effect that seems to coincide with what others describe as 3D pop mostly in images that have a distinct sharpness differential between subject and background on one side, and a slower, more subtle falloff of sharpness on the other side of the subject. I noticed this especially in the example images in OP's blog post, the rock, the sheep, the chair and the portrait.
I started this post out by wanting to contradict the sentence that I quoted, and perhaps I still kind of do, but I kind of come back to "most sharpness is only achieved in a thin slice" and everything not in that plane or orb of focus is not perfectly sharp, which is worded better in OP's blog post.

I think seeing both the succinct transition between subject and background (a sharp edge against blurry background) AND a more subtle falloff of sharpness on the subject in an image makes it have a tangible three-dimensionality to me.

Some idiotic decisions by yours truly:

- A friend got married. Yup, they asked me, yup, I did it. But with the usual disclaimers, I'm an amateur, I just document what I see,...
- I decided to go with two different cameras. K-1 with HD FA 31, K-3 III with DFA* 50. A wide and a slight tele. I don't have a harness, I just used the neck straps and let one of them hang on my body while I shot with the other. Worked out okay, the strap on my K-1 was a little shorter so after a while I decided to switch it so that the K-1 was on top. One thing that did happen: I didn't switch them off when not using them, so at more than one point my settings got changed by accident. Noticed not immediately, but rather quickly. Shutter speed and aperture changed led to a few more or less ruined images, while a change in White Balance could be easily corrected afterwards.
- Another thing I hadn't fully thought through before starting the day with two cameras: I hadn't synchronized their clocks to the second. When I had culled and edited everything, I wanted to sort them by time and assign them a sequential number, and that's when I realized that something was not right. I managed to adjust the difference with the help of EXIFToolGUI so now it should be very close to the correct course of events, and trying to solve this made me learn some things in the process, but I could've lived without the experience :D
- I shot a lot. 1300 clicks? I delivered 442. Culling was gruesome. Ceremony at the town hall, congratulations and a little celebration by friends afterwards, small detour with just the newlyweds to a location for some staged shots (some rain, cloudy, coldish, so not the greatest), and some group portraits with the closest family.
- I only realized I hadn't matched the WB between the two cameras after I had fixed the time issue, at that point I wasn't willing to fix the WB if my friend didn't mind.
- I didn't chimp for most of the day. Which was absolutely necessary or I would have missed so much, but it would have prevented a few shots with horribly missed focus. I went with a small zone and AF-S, which worked out okay for most of the shots.
- I did it for free. Or as my gift to the couple. They offered to invite me for dinner which I will accept when we find the time. But still, it was quite a lot of work.

Well, after all I learned a lot (most importantly: don't do it again? :D), and I hope I will remember some of the issues that showed up. And perhaps when you read this you can find a thing you would have done differently? One thing I will probably change in the future: get myself a 16-50 PLM and shoot with that on the K-3 III only. The K-1 files are very nice to work with (for example I completely misjugded the exposure in a scene so that the bride's dress was completely blown out, but I could recover it in most of the shots), but the buffer fills quickly and clears slowly.

Yes, this exactly! One click on the wheel and it changes from Single Spot AF-S to Area AF-C. I wish I could assign a change in shutter speed and/or aperture along with that on the same wheel. I can't though, right?

In Fullscreen viewing mode of an image, the bar that appears when moving the mouse to the top of the screen contains a symbol to hide RAW files. When that has been set, you can see the option in settings -> RAW to couple them

I use FastStone ImageViewer for the most basic things in my "workflow", starting with the initial culling process, ending with cropping the pictures I converted with DxO. I shoot RAW+JPEG, so the initial culling always consisted of me double-tapping the arrow keys to get to the next pair of RAW+JPEG images, and having to delete both when an image was garbage. I had read about FastRAWViewer as an alternative for the culling process, and tried it out, but it didn't feel as intuitive as I was used to by FastStone. I could invest the time to get everything set up just as I like it, but I would also have to pay for the software after a month of trying.
Turns out, I hadn't updated FastStone in years and they added the pairing option a couple of years ago. Now I'll be much happier to tackle the most annoying part of my photography process :)

And to generalize my experience, just a quick reminder for everyone out there, keep your software updated, sometimes new features will be included that make your life a little easier :)

I ordered two lenses in the past twelve months from Amazon, and on both the seal on the box was missing and there was no European warranty card. The lenses and everything else looked pristine, never before used. When contacting Amazon, they offered 10% off of the already great price when I kept the lens and wouldn't return it. They were both sold from and shipped by Amazon, but I think it has been established that they can't/don't keep their stocks of marketplace sellers and "original" Amazon stuff separate?
Does leave a sour taste when those things happen regularly.

Finding the right settings for wildlife

This can have many causes. One I could think of right away is if the settings you are at don't allow the camera to regulate the exposure, because the "correct" exposure is outside of the range you are operating in. For example, if you are in TAv mode and have set the aperture to wide open and the exposure time too long, in bright enough conditions the camera can only adjust the ISO down to the base ISO of 100, but for a correct exposure it would have to be able to set it to 10 or so. Then you'll have two options (which you can combine): stop down the lens and shorten the exposure time, enough so that the "correct" ISO lands in the range that is set.

One other reason could be that you have accidentally dialed in some exposure compensation.

It would have to be very cheap now for me to get one. And I'll have to check if the lab here offers the option for half-frame images. I could see myself getting one if both of those points will be met to my satisfaction.

What resolution monitor do you use?

Samsung "The Space" 27" WQHD (1440p) as main monitor, I got it a while back for a great price at the time. It was perfect for me because it was a) an upgrade on my previous 24" iiyama ProLite XB2483HSU which is now my secondary monitor, both in size and resolution, and b) with its 144Hz screen and variable refresh rate capability it was also great for my second hobby of gaming on the computer, and c) with its peculiar stand it didn't only work on my desk, I could also profit from the promise it has in its name, my usable desk space expanded by getting this monitor.

The one thing I didn't like was the way the miniDP-cable pulled down on the port at the back of the monitor, which did cause some trouble over time, but I was able to deal with this with a bit of tape.

A little related, regarding perspective, a little thought I heard Neil deGrasse Tyson say today (in an older video): the tides are not coming in and out, but the hills of water are more or less stationary between Sun and Moon, and the Earth's rotation is making us go into and out of those hills...

On the topic of photographing the eclipse, not gonna happen here in Germany for the next 57 years or so? At least a total one. Doubt that'll still be in my lifetime, and I don't know about the status of my current gear at that time anyways...

Doesn't matter if partial or total ones, I much rather look at pictures taken by people who are much more passionate about those sorts of photos than myself... I have no particular interest in trying myself at photographing that sort of thing, at least not right now.
