That's something I have been wondering also. From what I have read on the forum, we were some issues with the older SDM lenses, which could more or less very quickly end with a dead autofocus motor. However at some point, they change the SDM motor in the production such as it is much more reliable. What happened exactly? Did they change the motor completely? Because on the reviews of several DA*, the SDM autofocus was often described as a bit slow. Does the improvement also affect performances or really just the failure rate?
I also find it a bit hard to get the logic behind the autofocus engine used in the different lenses: you have DC motor, SDM, now also PLM. DA* uses SDM, some DFA* use also SDM (but a different one?) or DC (such as the 70-200). I thought that SDM was more adapted to bigger, heavier lenses compared to DC based on how they were integrated into the different lens classes, but the DFA* line proves me wrong. So I don't really get the logic on why not using the DC motor on all lenses, as it seems to be fast, silent and reliable. When you don't know much about lens design, it is sometimes hard to follow.

I totally agree on that, but then why does the pixel count on the sensors keeps rising? Purely for marketing reasons? Or does the professional world really benefit from that? I guess for some applications it makes sense but is it really so common?
I would for sure prefer to keep going on 16MP (never tried 24MP yet) while getting better dynamic range and low noise than getting more resolution. But for sure I am no pro, my needs are different.

Honestly, the first time I tried it, I was a bit disappointed by its rendering. Maybe I wanted something else. But after some times, I started to see the images differently and I like it more and more. Can't really explain it.
I have bought last week another M lens (the 200mm f4) for very cheap. I am quite curious to see how it behaves!

Got this lens recently and wanted to give it a try. All are on a K-30 with aperture somewhere between f2 and f4, probably f2.8 (can't remember exactly... miss the EXIF!)

Hi,
I own the DA 18-135 and I love it for its range (among other things). But to be honest, usually I don't use it at 18 and prefer to shoot around 24mm. I don't know what the Tamron is worth optically but in terms of range, for me the Tamron would be good enough. However, the silent autofocus, compact size and WR of the pentax lens might be a real plus.
Like usual, the real choice depends on you, your needs and your finance.

I think I am just asking too much to my camera :) It can't do magic when light is an issue.
I did not know about this. I am not a big fan of flashes but I think it is because I never had a real good one. I should think about it for sure.
Manual focus is fine, but I am terrible at it. I try to practice, but unfortunately my eyes are not that good.
Indeed, that is a (good) option. It is just a bit slow some time, but again, maybe I am just asking too much :D

Yes I do. It helps sometimes but it makes no magic for me.
But if you use liveview, it means you are using contrast detection AF, which is not my case, correct? So the 2 situations (and hence the results) are different I think.

Hello to all!
I am having a bit of trouble with the autofocus on the K-30 in low light conditions (mainly indoors, picture of my daughter in the evening). Using the DA35 (which I love so far!) at widest aperture (f2.4), the AF is struggling a lot to catch the subject in focus (and I miss a lot of shots because of that). I know it might be a difficult situation for the AF anyway, and I am pretty sure the camera and the lens works fine (I have no real issue in daylight). So my question is: is this the normal behaviour for the K-30? Or is it just me who is not good enough? Would another (better) model like the K-3 make a huge difference in respect to AF? I have read several times that Pentax camera are not as good as their competitor AF-wise, so oculd my issue be due to the limit of Pentax AF system?

Thank you all for your answers. From your advices, I think I would choose the 18-135 lens setup which might be more appropriate (I almost always have it when I travel light, which is when you might want a close-up LENS as Ontarian50 mention). I just need to figure out if Hoya is good enough (because it is really quite cheap, which is good) or if other, more expensive brands are really worth the extra cost. But I do have good experience with Hoya in general.

I have a couple of related questions concerning these close up filters. I also have the DA 18-135 lens, and was wondering which "strength" (from +1 to +4, as you find them in shops) would be the most suitable for doing some macro work with this lens. From what I read, it depends a bit on which focal lens you are working with, right?
Alternatively, I also own the DA 50mm, which has better image quality and is much faster. Would it be more suitable for this kind of application? In this case, what would be the answer to the previous question?
