Since I've been following this thread I figured I'd update it and say that I went ahead and built a Ryzen 7 1700 computer (16 gb RAM, RX580 video card, Asrock b350 motherboard). I did not overclock the CPU yet, only changed the RAM frequency in the BIOS (to 2933 MHz), which was the highest stable speed for this G.Skill DDR4 RAM.
I downloaded Lightroom CC and performance was good but not really amazing (but when is it ever...). Since I use Linux mainly, I also tried darktable and performance was fantastic. Everything was noticeably faster than Lightroom, in fact damn near instant for common tasks like loading the program, loading up a K-1 DNG into the develop module, and zooming in and scrolling around at 100%. I wouldn't have an issue using LR but since I always hated that lag that always comes with it, I think I'll give darktable a run for a while.

I'm asking $650 USD for the Zeiss lens. As in the description it does not have its original box nor original front lens cap. I plan to send it with a replacement lens cap

Hi Gosman
My apologies. You're the 3rd person to post in this thread that you sent a PM without me getting anything in my inbox. Could it be a bug with the forum? For the other people who posted in the thread that a PM was sent, I followed up with my own PM if nothing arrived in my inbox.
Again, sorry to hear you were interested and didn't get a response.

The Ryzen R7 processors come in at the bottom on their Photoshop test: Photoshop CC 2017.1.1 CPU Comparison: Skylake-X, Kaby Lake-X, Broadwell-E, Kaby Lake, Ryzen 7
Not only that but the R7 1700 isn't tested (in either comparison), but the faster/pricier Ryzen 1700X did poorly, even against the older gen Intel CPUs (article was written before Intel's new line came out of course)
I'm excited about Ryzen too, but based on this comparison it looks like Intel is a lot better for Photoshop (thanks to Adobe's outdated software). Check out the new i7-8700, and i5-8400 looks like amazing value (costs less than R7 1700 too I think). If you are using other software Ryzen might be more competitive.
Edit: just realized you said for video specifically (whoops), but if anyone's use case also involves Photoshop it's still something to consider. Cheers!

Everything sold. Thank you!
Item for Sale My Pentax K-1 (including battery, strap, battery charger, original box, CD, and manual) and 4 lenses. Awesome kit at a great price! Get amazing landscape and astrophotography shots with the D FA 15-30 f/2.8, take portraits with the legendary 77 mm Limited lens and grab the Carl Zeiss Distagon lens for when you want to take your time and get that special shot. Throw on the D FA 28-105 f/3.5-5.6 for a walkaround kit.
The K-1 is in good used condition with the only blemishes being some marks/small dents around the hotshoe (see pics), and a couple insignificant scratches on the bottom. Otherwise it is in excellent condition with no operational issues whatsoever. Shutter count is at 7869. Firmware 1.4. The hotshoe marks are from when I mounted my flash trigger backwards (not recommended). K-1 Body SOLD
Some accessories are missing: hotshoe cover, eyepiece cover for K-1; original packaging for the 28-105 mm and Zeiss lenses; and the original lens caps for the 77 ltd and Zeiss lenses. The Zeiss lens can ship with a replacement cap.
I have priced the items accordingly and this is a great deal (in my opinion) for some fantastic gear if you don't mind the marks around the hotshoe and some missing accessories. Everything else included (strap, charger, battery etc). Pentax D-FA 15-30 mm f/2.8: (SOLD)

Really good point. I suggested using an SSD (since OP already has one) in the post above yours but now realize I usually work on raw images from my 1 TB hard drive and not my SSD (until I crammed a 3rd SSD into my laptop and have much more space ).

Tons of opinions here but nobody mentioned OP has a mobile processor with 2 cores (i7-6500U), it's not powerful enough for the kind of operation you're describing. It sounds like it's working, just really slowly. Buying a mac isn't really necessary (unless you want one), and setting up a RAM drive on your computer is definitely insane.
To answer your question- for your next computer, keep in mind (just my opinion):
1. Desktop computers perform a lot better than similar priced laptops
1a. if necessary to have a laptop, get a decent CPU (see Laptop CPU Comparison - A 2017 Guide to Intel's Processor Hierarchy)
2. 16 GB of RAM is ideal but no less than 8
3. SSD
4. Dedicated graphics card is also ideal (probably only a small benefit for working on still images, but I always use dedicated graphics)
Also: Work with the images on your SSD, they will read/write a lot faster.

I have a K1 and Olympus EM5-ii. I meant to sell the Olympus after buying the Pentax but I couldn't follow through with it; now I use both systems regularly. Typically, I use the K1 if I know I'll want to heavily edit the raw files, and the Oly if I want great looking jpegs immediately.
I bought the K1 for better low light and more flexible raw files for editing. I'm very happy with the K1, but I also realized that I took the quality of the EM5ii for granted (mainly due to taking what I read online about sensor size a little too seriously) and that its low light ability is actually pretty good. Olympus' IBIS is fantastic.
One nice thing about the EM5ii that gets overlooked in reviews is that I think its wifi is more user friendly than some other brands. You still need the clunky app but you can flag photos for sharing on the back of the camera and when you connect and open the app it'll automatically transfer them. Not sure if that is a consideration for you.

I've only got my DFA 15-30 out at night a couple times so far but have no complaints with corner performance, theres very little coma or anything to be seen. Everything is super sharp. Is there any evidence that suggests the Sigma 14/1.8 will be better at coma, corner sharpness etc?
To be fair, of course more choice is always nice.

For me, I just plan to buy a standard length lens eventually but don't have a huge need for one right away, so I'm curious to see what's around the corner first. For OP's situation he did seem to suggest he might regret it if a new modern 50 came out right after buying the DA*55.
Plus I'm new to Pentax since K1 was released and already got a bunch of great lenses (DFA15-30, Zeiss 35/2, 77 Ltd, DFA28-105), my wallet needs this cooling off period :)

Good point (could apply to the Planar too if they had access). One observation is that I don't know if the Canon's lens is the best example from that system to go head to head against a couple primes. At least I think we here would object if the 5Div had the Planar and K1 the DFA28-105 (as much as I'm very happy with that lens).
Nice to see more examples of the K1 head to head with these other excellent bodies. Thanks OP and Dan Rentea
As for marketing, I think Pentax did the right thing just by putting out a fullframe body. It adds legitimacy to the entire system. Canon/Nikon sell loads of entry level bodies (arguably overpriced for what they offer) on the strength of their highly regarded pro lineups, even if 99.9% will never follow that so called upgrade path. I would assume that a boost in APSC market share through the K1 was one of the motivations for FF. Of course I'm not an industry insider so that is to be taken with a grain of salt.

It's not that much more difficult to choose, for relatively modern fullframe AF options you have a few to pick from, and they all have enough separating them to make a decision (slightly longer/shorter focal length, max aperture, macro). I'm talking about the 43 Ltd, FA50's, DFA 50/2.8, and DA*55.
If you can't decide what aperture or other features you want then just use the M50/1.7 you already have until we hear about a possible new DFA fast 50. I don't have a normal prime for my K-1 either and that's what I'm waiting for.

Hi all,
Just got back from a work trip to the Canadian arctic. I normally use a point and shoot or m43 camera for work (it's not pro photography work), but I brought my K-1 this time due to the very low light at this time of year. The temperature was between -28 C to -32 C and I was outside for 4 to 5 hours between breaks for 6 days.
The only minor issue that happened was the mirror stayed up once during a shot. It returned to normal after removing and replacing the battery. The rest of the time everything worked as normal with no special precautions taken. I was very happy with the performance overall.
I have used my other camera (Olympus E-M5ii) in these temperatures all last winter with no particular issues, just short battery life. But in my experience anything below -30C and especially nearing -40 causes strange behavior with any electronics.

Have you tried your 24-70 wide open for pictures of stars? At the very least it will give you an idea of how much speed you need, even if this lens wouldn't be your first choice for astro.
If you can't decide between those 3 focal lengths, there's always the 15-30 mm f/2.8? Look over at lonelyspeck, they really like the Tamron 15-30 for the fullframe systems, and it's their recommendation for Nikon Canon and Pentax.

I've never posted here before since I'm new to Pentax, but I thought I'd chime in. I bought my K-1 from Aden Camera. Not sure if they normally carry Pentax or if it was a cancelled special order.
I called every camera store I could find in BC/AB and kept going east- finally Aden said they had one left. Other stores said they couldn't even fill their pre-orders so I consider myself lucky.
