Precision Camera Repair - For Real?

That is certainly possible but Precision is not providing me with any information. From what I have seen they have no desire to actually analyze the problem - just quoted me on the replacement of the entire lens assembly. And that happened to be the cost of a new camera. And on top of that they returned the camera to me without the part that would help confirm their action.

And the part in question is not just a “lens cap”. It is an actual part of the lens that appears to have electronic connections, hence the Lens Error” message. The parts that serve as the "lens cap" are two leaf shutters that reside inside the missing piece. If the camera is trying to tell the lens protectors/shutters to open and they are not there then you will most likely get an error message. We will never know because the original parts were not returned to me.

After spelling out my problem with Ricoh, here's the answer I got:

"Thank you, for contacting Ricoh Imaging America.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your past, present and future support.

We have the repair center that can repair items that are sent in but they do not sell parts."

I don't know. The screen just reads "Lens Error" for a couple of seconds and then shuts off. I don't know if the error is the missing front piece or more serious internal damage. I bet Precision never bothered to check - just choose to replace the entire lens assembly.

Well, I got my camera back from Precision.

Yeah, no front lens cover returned with the camera! When I called they asked if I had included the part. I said "Of course, that was the reason for the repair!" So, I'm waiting for a response from them.

You're looking at $873.00 worth of damage.

The lens retracts and extends as normal when turned off/on. For all I know, if that front piece was properly reinstalled the camera might function. I have sent Ricoh a photo of the camera and a copy of the invoice as well as a reminder that I have been a loyal Pentax/Ricoh customer for over 30 years. We'll see if that has any value.

I guess I am a little confused. What advantage do these monochrome conversions have over just shooting in RAW and processing as a black and white image in Lightroom?

I know! when I booted it up it said "Lens Error". I considered working on it but I know how that has turned out for me in past:( I thought instead of causing more damage I would send it in and let the "pros" look at it and perform what appeared to be a very simple repair. I had no idea the cost would be the same as a new camera!

Yes, that's the damage - just the outer cover. The camera was in a Zing Neoprene case and the lens was retracted with the camera turned off when dropped. It's not like it was run over by a truck or something. It appeared to have minor damage and it might still function. When I get the camera back I will test it and post photos of the damage here.

How about the actual manufacturers, like they used to? Pentax used to have a great repair center in Colorado.

Precision quoted me the price of a new camera to have mine repaired so of course I declined and bought a new camera. Apparently they are not interested in repairing cameras, just selling new ones. If that is how they run a repair business they should go bankrupt.

Yes you are missing something. The GRIII is not just a "point and shoot" camera - it's a camera capable of some of the sharpest images I have ever taken(and I have some good cameras and lens).

Well they want $58.00 to return the camera to me but I don't know if it's worth it. I have already ordered a new one from B&H with 3 year drop protection! After this I hate giving money to Ricoh but I love that camera!

The front housing around the lens and the lens "leaves" came loose when I dropped it. I thought it was a minor problem but they want to replace the entire lens assembly $493.00 with $366.00 labor cost. If I refuse repair it cost me $58.00 to get my camera back.

And yeah, the next one I buy will be with drop protection!

I dropped my GR III and damaged the lens assembly. Sent it off to Precision and got the quote for repair today. $873.08. Seriously! I can't even come up with word to describe how frustrated and pissed of I am! As much as I love Pentax and my GRIII I seriously have to consider if I want to do business with a company that treats its customers like this. Are there any alternative choices for repair?

Can anyone provide contact info for Ricoh? They need to know that their terrible repair services are going to cost them business.

GR III Sharpness

I think I am becoming spoiled by the incredible sharpness of images taken with my GR. I went out yesterday to get some winter photos with my GR and K1/DFA 28-105. After comparing photos I have to say I am disappointed in the sharpness of the K1 with that lens. Of course there is more to a photo than sharpness but the GR seems to have it all when it come to image quality. Any similar experiences?

I also use a Nikon slide holder on my K1. I used to use a Vivitar 105 Macro but now use a Pentax 100mm Macro. Here's an example of a converted 35mm slide originally shot on Fuji Velvia with my LX. Not sure about the lens, probably a SMC Pentax 24mm F2.8.

Opinion time: what are your favorite manual lenses?

My favorite is my Zeiss 25mm Distagon with my 21mm Distagon and K 35mm f3.5 running a close second and third. I shoot more manual focus than anything else. However, I find myself shooting with my GR III a lot since I got it.
