GRIII reliability issues

I still got a few of those compacts too. They seem to be coming back. Like the "vintage film" cameras we'll have "vintage digital" soon. Haha. But I did both pocket carry and sometimes small camera pouch on strap carry.

I do have a small neoprene on the way and eventually I want one of their leather cases for my GR. For now I do have a microfiber sunglasses pouch I can drop ot in before a pocket.

I may even consider on of those aluminum lens caps and a case or pouch.

Man i JUST got my brand new GR III delivered and I read about the dust on sensor issues but it seemed (maybe my bias since I wanted a GR III) like it was more of an older version issue like GR II and earlier.

Now that I have one in hand, I really want to take it EVERYWHERE I go and obviously one of the reasons I bought it was because the "pocketability" Now here I am scared to put my brand new GR III in my jean, shorts, or pants pocket.

What are you guys doing? Are y'all just saying to hell with it and throw it in your pockets? I mean I got this camera because I want to USE it a lot. And today (delivered yesterday) I found myself not wanting to put it in my pocket... But I got this so I didn't have to wear a camera around on a strap or in a bag.

Do you guys use a case or pouch before you put it in your pocket? I see there is a aluminum lens cap some people use.

I mean we got these things to use not sit on a shelf. Like my poor old K3 has been for the last couple of years.

I'm a new photographer, I mainly just play around and take photos of my interests. I have taken a couple of photos of my son just to test, and my family really liked them.

So that brings me to flash question... My wife just told me she and her sisters want me to take portraits of the kids for the mother in law, for mother's day. I told her that I am a beginner and I can not guarantee that they will turn out well. But she said they hate the photos they get from the chain and want to try this. They know I am an amateur and are just willing to see how they turn out.... so I guess...

I only have a K3. And figure a flash may help. The portrait would be outside in the morning. Would this flash be OK for off camera flash? Would I need a remote trigger or anything?

What lens would be the best purchase for me at this time?

Thank you I am leaning this way.

THank you both. I would love to have this one but it is a little out of range for me at the moment. I am a photography baby at 39. But I plan to never be with out my camera. So I am planning on lots of clicks. But I will get this one for sure down the road.

So you think I can survive a couple to a few months with out anything longer than 70mm? I will keep my eye peeled here in the market place for longer lenses of course.

And I don't know if I am calling what it is correctly, but these samples from google search are what I mean when I say documentary/urban/city photography. Maybe it is architecture? I just have a thing for trying to preserve the older stuff before it gives way to the new. At this I WANT to TRY to do this...

I am expecting my new to me K-3 on Monday. At that time I would have a Pentax-M 50mm 1:1.7, and a Pentax 35-70 f3.5-4.5. So I am wondering and want to get ONE more. I am interested in Documentary Photography (urban, buildings, roads) Night, and low light, and maybe some street eventually.

With this in mind should I go Wide or get a zoom? I was considering DA 35mm 1.8, 17-50 F2.8 Sigma or Tamron, or a DA 18-135mm WR. If I go wide I would not have not have anything tighter than 70mm until my next lens purchase. But Maybe I can have a little more room to work with if I get the 18-135mm. I just know that the 17-50 is faster. What do you think.

What should I buy DSLR or a GR II?

Well I actually do prefer both the K5 and K3 models to the KS2 and K70 models. I just like the look a little better and it seems the controls on the back are a little better. They also seem a little more sturdy looking. But the K3 are at top of budget just with a body. The K5s are fine with a body and one of the "not so expensive lenses" which I know are slow. The problem is FINDING a K 5 IIs. There are plenty shipped from Japan on ebay. And a few on Amazon which ironically I feel are little more shady than the ebay ones since you can't even see them, or get much more info other than "Used - Very Good" as a description.

So at the moment it seems KS2/K70 are the best bet unless I WAIT for K3 to drop in price more. Or go Ricoh GRII/mirrorless route.

So the K70 is almost like a newer, slightly souped up KS2?

Well I am still researching but would like to buy today so that I could have the camera by the weekend or early next week. I have come off the initial $1200 and lowered it to $6-800. But that takes me out of K3 II range. So I am now trying to decide K S2, USED K 5 IIs (very hard and exspensive to find), or k 70.

Obviously with the KS2 I can get 2 kit lenses 5.6 18-50mm and 5.6? 50-200mm on the lower end of my price scale. Plus with my manual 1,7 50mm would make 3 lens to start.
K 5 IIs and a new Pentax 21987 DA 35mm f/2.4 AL in this price range
K70 18-135mm or K70 body only and add the Pentax 21987 DA 35mm f/2.4 AL

Which would you do?

I still have a soft spot for the GRII or another mirrorless type just for the ease of carrying and less intimidating for me and the others when I am in public doing some street or just general photography. But I also realize the GRII is not going to do well for landscape stuff. But really as I think about it Cityscape/ landscape is less important to me than low light/night photography.

WOW, thanks for all the help thus far. I knew I would get some feedback here. At first I didn't want the K70 since it could not fit a battery grip. But now that I considered the point and shoot so much, I realized to carry it the most I should go as light and compact as possible.

OK, I am a beginner and I want a Pentax. I used (and still own) an old Pentax ME for my crime scene photography class almost 20 years ago. I bought it from a pawn shop and it came with a 35mm and maybe a 50. I can’t find the other lens at the moment.

So, I want to stay loyal to the camera that started it all for me. I have always had an interest in photography. I just never really had more than a point and shoot or cell phone. But even with a cell phone I enjoy taking a good photo, or experimenting with the “pro” settings on my Samsung Note 5 phone camera.

I have wanted a K3 II for the longest time. I honestly know I could and would be just fine with a Ks2 or K50. But for some reason I am hung up on the K3 II. Now the $850+ price is the only reason I don’t already have the K3 II right now. I just about have the boss talked into letting me get it too. If I got everything I wanted it would be $1500+, if I get the bare minimum it would be $1200+ on total.
Now I just heard about these Ricoh GR II cameras. And for about $600 I could have what sounds like an awesome camera. And I still support Ricoh Pentax. I know a GR is a LOT different than a K3II or a KS, K50 for that matter. But maybe I should go the cheapest most bang for my buck route.

For what it is worth, I am interested in Night Photography, Cityscapes/landscape (night or day), street, editorial, and Architecture.
Now in total disclosure, I am in a position that I can incorporate a lot more photography into my days than I used too (hence the serious thought of a nice “real camera”). In the pipe dreams, I would like to turn the hobby into some extra funds with a webpage or blog. Or if I were good enough some freelance stuff on local events. But that is not anything I expect to happen very soon. Just saying it because I think that is one of my hang ups where I feel that I need a DSLR.
What do you guys think I should do? Could I get what I need for night/low light, and cityscapes, dark city streets and alleys with a GR II and a tripod? Or should I just go for one of the DSLRs?

Also, I do realize that the only good camera is the one you have with you when you want a photo. And obviously, the GR could be with me 24/7 since it can go in a jacket or cargo/jeans pocket. I do think I would carry a K3, KS, or K50 a lot too. But I could see times I wouldn’t when I could or would have had the GR in a pocket.
