Pentax K1 Mk2 and lenses

Thanks all for the postings....given me some food for thought.

My Tamron is the SP Di 90 mm, and after reading postings and re looking at the shots I have taken with it ( -Native bee pic below) - I'll likely stick with it. I do take a lot of outdoor/ insects, flowers etc and am happy with the Tamron. Always use manual focus, so AF not an issue as insects don't usually stay still. And yes, I do realise that the K1 Mk2 has crop mode. Just looking to improve on my photos/quality with a FF camera. And as it seems the tamron will be compatible with the K1 will go with that.

Will keep you posted with K1/tamron macro combination photos.

Pentax K1 Mk2 and lenses

Hi there,

Have been looking into buying a K1 Mk2 and a new macro lens as I do a lot of macro photography and ready for something better. I currently have a K3 and Tamron 90mm macro which I'm pretty happy with. When I purchase the K1, I was thinking of upgrading my Tamron to a better macro to go with it. I have researched a few macros within my price range

(> $800 aud) and haven't come up with anything decent. Have read plenty of reviews of the Pentax D FA 100mm f/2.8 but they all agree on CA issues with this lens. And due to a lack of K mount third party lenses, thinking I'll stick with the Tamron. Any ideas or suggestions appreciated.

Would also appreciate any advice/known issues with the KI Mk2.
Thanks

Thanks for the technical explanation guys, in your opinion, should a Hotshoe Safe Sync resolve the issue?
Looking for a simple solution - me not being technically gifted/minded

As I said - great results after doing some experimental shots with it - lots of good features that I like, plus the cost of a high end replacement decided me in the end. Will see how it goes with the Safe Sync? Perhaps I should take up the issue with Ricoh? (: ):

Viltrox JY670 ring flash - K5iis can only fire flash once, K7 is fine

Thanks everyone for your helpful comments, I'm happy to stick with Pentax as I have been using them for a long time and the results are good. Yes, there probably will be compatibility issues from time to time, this is the first one - have been using Pentax for the last 15 or so years, so not a bad run rate.
I am going to persevere with the Viltrox and get a safe sync, hopefully that will solve the issue, and hopefully that will be end of story ? (and this current thread) :)

Yeh, I was having fun getting used to using the Viltrox, great macro shots and an improvement on my previous macro photography.
Yes - Pentax still make their Ring Flash - if you've got a spare K or so lying round..........mmm, they do know how to charge - I like to buy genuine Pentax gear, but my Camera only cost a bit over that.
Did see one on sale here in Aus for half price - the Metz is reasonable value for half that.

Yes Lord Lucan - not the camera - cheap Chinese equipment is the issue; the thread involving this issue has determined that! The Viltrox was not that expensive (around $120 AUD) cheap compared to top of the line Ring flashes, results are good and I was having fun with the macro and flash unit. Yes macro is slow sometimes, but I take a lot of insect shots, so a reliable (and properly working) flash is essential. Am having issues returning the flash for a refund/replacement - I will definately NOT be buying any cheap chinese equipment in the future. Looking at a Metz or similar.

Same problem with my K3 - JY670 will only fire once - have to turn the unit off and then on again to get it to fire again.
Running up to date firmware - no difference.
Have you resolved the issue??

Hi again,
Have just been reading up on using non comaptable flash units: Secrets of Powershot Flash Photography,
and alhtough I don't understand the technicalities, wondering now if there is a danger and it will cause damage to my camera using something like the JY670 flash or some other brand of ring flash unit, which may be adveritsed as being comapatable with Pentax cameras???? Or is it safe to use any of these with a Safe Sync. I have an old external flash unit (inherited from my Dad) that I fear may also be a danger and cause damage to my K3? So is a Safe Sync a necessary investment - with me not being able to afford a top level flash unit? I think I need to go and do a University course just to understand all of the technicalities invoved with DSLR photography once you get away from the basic operation :)

---------- Post added 01-10-18 at 06:00 PM ----------

Does anyone have any suggestions for buying a Safe Sync for my K3? (brands/models etc)
Thanks

 Hi, I just purchased a new Viltrox JY670 Ring flash for my K3, having issues with it only firing once, whatever the camera/flash setting I use. I have to turn the flash unit off and then on again for it to fire -very annoying, but still very good results with the photos taken using the flash. Similar issues were confirmed in an older thread (link below). Apparently, there is an electrical "fix" that can solve this, but being no sort of electrical whizz and so as not to void my warranty, not going to go down that path. Also a Hot Shoe Safe Sync adapter suggestion to resolve the issue? but why should I buy yet another gizmo to fix a new gizmo (ring flash). I have emailed the Chinese manufacturer (Shenzhen Jueying Technology Co.,Ltd) with my issue - no reply. Not happy and wondering if anyone has any useful suggestions? - (apart from telling Viltrox/Shenzen what they can do with their JY670).
Thanks

Hi, I was looking at an older (finished) thread re Voltrix JY670 Ring flash, which I just purchased, and it's issues with firing only once. I have a K3 with version1.30 firmware, but am still having issues with the flash.
It only fires once when you turn it (and the camera) on then won't fire again unless you turn the flash off and on again. The old thread recommended soldering a resistor into the unit, but not being a technical kind of guy (and knowing stuff all about elcectronics) am reluctant to even attempt something like that. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

Thanks Jatrax, have udated the firmware to 1.30 recently, but was under the impression the issue with new Pentax 55-300 was an electrical contacts issue and not a firmware fix? Also not really certain that the Sigma (with HSM) will function properly with the K3?
All I'm after is a mid priced (good) tele lens (if such a beast exists) - I'm not that concerned with AF as I find I do a better job with manual focus

Hi, I realise it's an old thead, but - I have a K3 with (Crippled) KAF2 mount, I can't find any sensible (and in laymans terms) information about what lenses will fit (and funcion) properly on the K3, I have looked at KAF3 and KAF4 mount lenses (Pentax HD DA 55-300mm F/4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE/Sigma 18-300mm DC Macro HSM Contemporary Lens ) and can't determine if either will function properly with the K3 -I have read about the electromagnetic diapragm etc, but still none the wiser. Ditto for a KAF3 mount lens - still in the dark and don't want to spend the money on new lens that is not entirely compatible with the K3
Thanks
