Hi everyone,

One night away from home and so many great comments come in, gotta love this community. I've read them all of course and they really helped me a lot.

I've decided that I'm going to stick with Pentax and not switch to another camera system. I love shooting with pentax and changing to another system would make it much more expensive. I know I will be satisfied when I stay with pentax, a guarantee that I won't have if I change.

I've been checking some reviews from the K70, because I dismissed it before and I have to say it ticks a lot of boxes and comes really close to what I want (I still miss the top lcd, but the KP doesn't have that either and battery life is a bit of downside but then I'll just get a spare battery). It's smaller, WR, great DR and low light situation. The KP is truly stunning and makes my heart go faster, however it would leave no room to expand my current lens collection. And for the price of the body of the KP, I could buy approximately a K70 body with either a 20-40ltd or a 16-85 lens, which I think makes a decent upgrade from what I have.

This feels like the best decision in my current situation and I want to thank you all for your advice!

Thanks a lot for all the comments!

I've considered this one, as it is of course a limited and I'm curious about the "pixie dust" image quality and the build quality looks define. I think it will be a beautiful combination on the KP (as they sell it now as a sort of kit combination). The price was always a bit on the high end to justify the fact that I give up an extra 10mm, but it's a lens that is always in the back of my mind. If a great deal comes along, I might take the plunge.

Tot tell you the truth, I've never considered the k-70, generally because of the lacking Lcd on top which I use quite often on my K5. Do you look through your viewfinder when you change your settings or can you see it on your back lcd screen? Considering weight and features it does tick a lot of boxes.

It is interesting that no one thinks mirror less is the way to go. Is it because lack of quality? Lack of availability of lenses or because ergonomics are not on par with Pentax (or all three of them)

Hi Adam,

Thanks for your reply, I thought about the KP. Although its above budget at this point, it looks phenomenal and it's worth considering saving up to or waiting until the price drops a bit/people sell them. I'll definitely keep the KP in mind. I'm especially interested in how people compare it (in terms of weight and holding the camera) with the k3ii. It doesn't look that big of a difference in height and length when you see a shot of them next to each other, however neither does the K5 with the K3 and people think it's significantly bigger.

Hi everyone,

I currently own the Pentax K5 with a tamron 17-50, pentax K 28mm f3.5, pentax A 50mm f1.7. I love shooting my K5, however I do notice some downsides and I feel it's getting a bit outdated/older. There is a bit of a struggle here, because there are several options and I thought all of them and they all have downsides and upsides. I would love to hear your 2cnts and what your experience was with upgrading or changing. Below is what I find troublesome with my current K5.

- My pentax K5 is missing the lens release button (I release it with a bobby pin, yes no joke. It works fine in most circumstances but it's less than ideal as you can imagine).
- I find the overall package of a K5 with the tamron quite heavy, because I backpack a lot and this takes up a lot of space and some weight.
- I find AF is relatively slow and sometimes it's just off or hunts in low light. However I'm not sure whether that's just the camera or it's a combination of camera + tamron

Last week my dad showed up with his fresh and new Olympus Om-d e-m10 mark ii (can you believe the length of this name..), focusing with his camera made my camera feel like a slow dinosaur. However I thought that his camera was nice in size, but felt a bit plastic and if I wanted to adjust the iso I had to go into a menu. It felt like I lost the ability to control the photo with his camera, but it got me intrigued with mirror less camera's. I also held the sony a6000 and a7 last week in my and both felt much better. However I love the quality of pentax, the image quality (especially DR) but also the ergonomics.

- If I want to upgrade the first thing that comes to mind is the K3(ii). However it's even bigger than the K5 which is for me a big downside. I also read some negative things about noise and DR, however coming from K5 I'm sure it's better than what I had.
- I can also get a cheap K5iis, I enjoy my K5, it's an upgrade and it leave a little room for maybe some new glass.
- I can sell the tamron, even though I love sharpness and the f2.8 and find a lens with better af and build quality in the same range .
- I can switch to sony a7 or a6000, keep my older pentax glass, having much less weight. But scared too compromise on ergonomics and image quality (although I think IQ is great, not so sure about low light situations).

To summarize, below is what I find important in a camera. I mainly shoot while I travel. People's portrait (low light market/souq scenes, inside churches, mosques and some scenery).
+ works great in low light situations
+ Good results in higher ISO, I do print my photographs on A2 or A1 but never bigger.
+ fast(er) AF, I do not need to catch a cheetah, however playing children on the street would be nice
+ being able to control my camera easily, especially ISO, shutter speed and aperture is something I want to adapt without having to deep dive into a menu
+ Image quality
+ Being able to use my old pentax glass (even though I use my tamron the most, the build quality is poor and if I change gear. I would be more devastated not being able to use my old primes than my tamron).
+ whole combination doesn't weigh a ton to carry with me during my travels.

Am I asking for the impossible?

I can get a pentax-k 28mm f3.5 for 150€. I think it's a lens that does't come along that often, is 150€ a decent price? I can always try it and resell it

Whoah! Thanks a lot for all the response. I'll take it all in consideration and I'll have to google some new options. I added some photo's of the tamron and in the first three you can see what I like about this lens the dynamic range and also the sharpness (maybe not from corner to corner, but the white beard hairs in full resolution jump of the screen) (they are edited in lightroom so they are brighter in color).

In the last two (both actual market scenes) you can see some details I don't quite like (I can work around it though). I find that in the first of the last two, the face of the woman is not quite sharp, the focus is off center. Yes there is a lot going on and it's shot at f5, ISO 200 and 1/200s, so maybe it would have been sharper if the aperture was smaller. But this happened a few times during my trip.

In the last one (which is shot at 17mm, as you can see the wide-angle) the flare comes in from the right on the females head in the center is disturbing. I have to say that it was broad daylight and I'm not a 100% positive I had the hood on the lens, but flare something that every now and then comes along with this lens.

Going through my photo's again I realized that actually my focal point is not that fixed as I thought it was (I also reckon that the majority I uploaded here is actually around 42mm..) and also that some very different but decent shots were taken within seconds from each other and that of course you can move yourself with your legs but sometimes it's just a matter of seconds and being able to zoom in or out can be so helpful.

I sometimes get the feeling that a prime can add a certain depth, less flat (I think carl zeiss calls it 3D), but I might romanticize this.

How do prime users do this, do you change really fast? Because pentax primes are quite small of course, or do you stick around with what is on the camera and just make it work?

Thank you for the extensive post! Very helpful!

Right now I'm not at home so I can't post any examples but I will do so later on today (as Facebook examples won't do them any justice). I think 90% of the time I shoot in Raw and I post process usually in Lightroom and sometimes in normal Photoshop, so popping out the colours (or saturating them) and adjusting contrast is something I usually do afterwards and it does work out great.

Honestly I'm very happy with my lens at the moment and it suits me in most occasions. However, when you read the forums and people make comparisons they say that 28mm on the tamron is no way near comparable with 28mm on a prime in terms of sharpness or the bokeh and it makes you wonder... I know it's the photographer that makes the photograph and the camera + lens is just a tool, but the curiosity remains

Hi everyone,

This is my first post on this forum, although I've been lurking around for quite some time here. But I can't make up my mind (I googled a lot and more options came up and I'm starting to get more and more confused).

I own the Pentax K5 and the tamron 17-50 lens. For travel I really like this lens, it's versatile, sharp in most circumstances and with the K5 it works quite well in low light. But sometimes I miss that kind of oomph in terms of colour, contrast and sharpness and because of that the allure of a prime is really appealing to me. From a friend a borrowed once the 35mm f 2.4, but besides the plastic building quality (I know that the tamron is plastic as well but it feels more solid), I did not like te focal length. It was not wide enough to include enough scenery or close enough for a portrait.

When I travel I really like to go out to marketplaces and capture the people that sell or wander around these places (people portraits are my favourite!) and my most used focal length is somewhere between 24-32mm on the tamron. Considering this, I thought off course of the pentax fa 31 but, due to it's price, it's for now unfortunately off limits. I was thinking of the old carl zeiss distagon 28mm and change it to the pentax mount. However I'm not sure if the manual focus is that easy that you can use it fast enough on a market and streets. I would love to hear other opinions or other options and is a prime a real addition to the kind of photography I'm doing? (I'd like to think so!)
