Welcome blandini,

The k20d is a great camera. I actually preferred its ergonomics over the k5. Coming from film can be a great advantage provided you built your knowledge on exposure, dynamic range, etc. Enjoy the camera and good luck with the contests.

Hand holding ND10 Filter?

Thanks for the feedback. I'm actually looking to extend shots in bright daylight to several seconds where possible in black and white and landscape work to get smooth cloud movement or water. The screw-in route is unfortunately not as affordable as I'd like with some of my lenses requiring 82mm. Also looking at adaptability onto some ultra wides with slight mods with a 4x4 filter holder onto lenses that don't have thread mounts.

Hand holding ND10 Filter?

Hi All,

I'm looking to purchase a 10 stop ND filter for use for wide angle landscape work but the Lee holders are hard to come by and I'm having doubts about whether the hitech with 82mm filter ring will work on some of the wider ring zooms. I was thinking that I could just hand hold in the meantime while I waited, but not sure if this was advisable for really long exposures.

Does anyone have experience with this?

Cheers,
Libby

J.Scott,

Good point, didn't catch that as I was posting the ad. I meant the knurled focusing ring. Just some typical signs of wear.

PPG Pet Peeves - What can't you vote NO on fast enough

I think it's really sad how PPG has gone to the dogs. They need a much better voting system due to the crap that people submit. The number of times i've seen someone clearly dump a set of images from vacation is simply unacceptable.

It used to be that if you had an image make it through the screening process, it was something to be proud of. A rite of passage and recognition from your peers. Now, it seems like they just seem to accept anything that an average joe sees as a pleasing or neat photo and so that it can be used as part of their advertising campaign.

I recently put in a submission and while I was happy to see it was accepted, I hadn't reviewed the gallery in a long time. Having reviewed what's been accepted in the gallery and even some that make the 'premiere' section, I don't know that I felt that same enthusiasm as I used to when i waited in anticipation of the acceptance of an image.

This camera was used in conjuntion with my k-7 for mostly landscape and travel photography. Very well babied and always protected in my pack when not shooting. Incredibly low shutter actuaionts - Shutter count on last image was 4021.

Need consulting assistance

Mensrea,

Welcome to the forum and the world of DSLRs in general. As many others have posted, you will find tons of advice on the web and friendly members from the forum. Your best bet is to post any specific questions you have and see if people from the forum will chime in.

If what you're looking for is consultation of a more technical nature, ie sensor technology, electronics theory, there's tons of articles on the internet.

If it's a personal shopper you're looking for to help you with gear, then you'd be best served just spending your money on rentals of different systems and see which ones feel the best in your hand and have intuitive ergonomics (menus and all) and that loosely termed 'image quality' to your liking, since it's you who has to live with the camera in the end.

Otherwise, I think i speak largely on behalf of the forum members when I say 'tell us your problems and we'll see what we can't do for you...'

Cheers,
Libby

jbrocious,

I highly recommend Valley of Fire State Park just north of Hoover Dam as a day outing for photography. If the weather co-operates and you get good lighting, it can make for some stunning photos. See my gallery of photos from vegas at www.libbyandali.com.

Best of luck and happy snapping.

Suggestions for a backpack for Pentax 67 II Kit

I second the lowepro recommendations or something from KATA, but the lowepros are very well thought out. For landscape use, I would consider the phototrekker or vertex AW series. really nicely padded waistbelts will make for a much better hiking experience. I've hiked in Patagonia with 2 K20D bodies, tripod and host of lenses and it really held up well.

If you're looking at humping it into camp though, just look for a good backpack and warp everything in microfibre cloths and something to seal out moisture. I normally negotiate the hike with a pack and alternate between handholding and slinging an SLR around my neck so that I can easily stop to take a shot. I imagine shooting with the 67 will be more involved and you will not be taking frequent breaks to haul it out. If that's the case though, just make sure it's the last thing you pack so that it sits relatively accesible toward the top of the pack or rejig the sleeping bag compartment so that you can access from there.

Photography versus other hobbies

Photography can be seen as expensive or affordable option as someone makes it out to be. For that matter, so can most hobbies (save the extremely high ticket items like aviation, etc).

I've been enjoying photography for over a decade and my best guess will be that i've spent close to 15-20k over that period. But how do you want to rationlize the cost? is it cost per year - what if you go long bouts without shooting? is it then cost per usage time? My point is, we should stop rationalizing it and just enjoy it - warts and all. I'm just as guilty as anyone else of wanting my share of toys, and interest in the advancing technology. That's always been a part of it, just that it moves more rapidly now.

I feel the same way about my cycling. It's a sunk investment, and I enjoy logging some long miles on the road. I'll never be a pro, but I enjoy the latest uber light componentry as anyone else.

In the end, let's not try and appease our conscience to justify how we spend our money. Spend your money how you will, because that's why you work hard for it and just enjoy.

BTW If you enjoy Settlers you should give Carcasonne a try. Can be played with 2 people and the game strategy gets significantly more complex as you add players.

Cheers,
Lib

Exposure Time

Set the camera to B for bulb mode and you pretty much have to use a stopwatch as a reference for longer exposures. Mind you if you're going that long you're probably set to a low ISO and the difference of a few seconds or even minutes when you get into hour long exposures is not a huge difference.

Bear in mind though that the K20 defaults to a frame subtraction which means the camera will be occupied taking a second black frame of equal length. So a 1 hr exposure means the camera won't be available for a second frame until 2 hrs later. A few people have gotten around this by taking multiple 29 sec frames and then stacking them in photoshop. Just something to keep in mind.

Protective Filters - Needed or Not

A protective filter even under ideal conditions (optically flawless), is another element to decrease the amount of light striking the sensor, if not degrade the image. I think carrying a microfiber cloth and some lens solution and having the discipline to clean lenses after shooting in a difficult environment will do more for you than a filter.

Of course, this precludes the cases where you will be exposing it to physical damage, say worried about stray branches striking the lens while bushwacking, or in the middle of a sandstorm.

Poll: Would you buy a Pentax FF?

As a hobbyist, I don't know that I feel there is a great need for me to have an FF camera. While it would be nice, the drawbacks of size and limited selection of FF lenses from Pentax right now would likely rule it out for me.

I'd like to see Pentax leverage their strength in small, weather sealed and capable cameras to gain more market share before going the FF route. IMHO they'd likely gain a much larger following if they made radical improvements on their AF.

Fact is, that it's much more expensive for me to own a Pentax system as a hobbyist than one of the big two due to lack of rental gear options to experiment. Instead one has to essentially own most of their kit unless they are fortunate enough to know other pentax shooters in their community.

I'd personally pass on the FF. After picking up the K-7, I must say I still prefer the overall IQ and feel of the K20D. Their ROI on a new paradigm for their AF design rather than an FF camera would probably be greater.

Buying international - what are the costs?

mba,

There are no duties on camera gear, and you are not charged state taxes on the item. However, you are still subject to local taxes (HST in your case) and depending on how the item is shipped a brokerage fee by the courier company. Trying jumping on Photography, Digital Camera, Lens Price Comparisons for Canadians - photoprice.ca for a comparison and look at one of the US companies price and detailed breakdown for an idea of what the difference in cost is.

My personal experience is that some of the Canadian dealers that are online or ebay provide very competitive pricing and then you are then a little better supported by the manufacturer for warranty work (although pentax does offer a 1yr international warranty).

The used market is also a very good place to look. Montreal in particular has a very active used market on kijiji where you can often find a good deal.

Book Question

I haven't ready 'understanding exposure' but it seems to come fairly highly recommended and the title does sort of say it all. This is definitely a concept that you want a firm grasp on so that when you're photographing, you can confidently work on composition and exposing the shot you see in your mind than what is physically represented.

I'm reading a book called the practical zone method currently which tries to break down Ansel Adams Zone System in a less technical approach. To be fair, it's still pretty technical and there's a lot of reference to the traditional methods of film (which I come from). It is instructive in a lot of ways, and capturing photos on a negative and exposing on paper has a very physical tangible property towards building an understanding to exposure (not to mention a costly incentive). There's sections that specifically address the unique nature of the digital medium, but you have to be patient and understand the relevance of film and not just dismiss it as a thing of the past.

The Scott Kelby books are much more of a 'canned result' oriented approach so it brings immediate gratification, but in the long run, i'm not sure the photographer is any better off understanding what they are controlling to give that result.

RAW vs JPEG for a poster sized print
Posted By libbyh

coach,

Two separate issues.. Jboyde is right - purely from a pixel density perspective, there is no difference in the number of pixels in either format which dictates print size.

However, RAW always captures more data and gives more latitude in post processing, while a straight from camera JPEG has already applied some compression and image adjustments for you. So if you're applying a lot of post processing, the uncompressed RAW files will respond better (which includes upsizing) until you're ready for the print stage at which point you would merge down the image before converting to a jpeg and selecting your own level of compression.

k200d or a k20, need help

I had both a DS (slightly smaller in size to a K200D) and K20D and have brought them both on my travels hiking. However I found that when reaching for a camera, I always grabbed the K20D to work with. Having immediate control over most of my shooting parameters was important to me.

With the DS I found that I'd often want to make an adjustment and have to delve through menus which really interrupted my workflow. Comes down to what you put a priority on. Some people like a smaller body (as do I), but I'm not willing to compromise ergonomics and control for it. K-7 has proved very capable in this respect, but I'm almost finding the controls a bit cramped on a body of its size and often find myself accidentally pressing the wrong button. I'll give it some more time to see if I adjust, but it may just have to go on the market...

Autofocus is not 100%

I would tend to agree with Marc on this one in that I think there has always been an 'acceptable' level of calibration error, but as sensor resolution has increased to a point where it's testing the optical limits of the lens, slight focusing errors are now easier to spot when pixel peeping. Ie it was an acceptable level or error because the amount it was off by was imperceptible to the eye.

I found this to be the case when I was post processing images from the K20D vice my DS and finding images seemed to appear softer at 100% when this is clearly not the case, you're simply looking at a smaller area of actual print size magnified. I think that's why you'll find the most critical pundits of IQ verify in print and not on screen.

Mind you for cameras that are completely out, you could send in the body and lens(es) for the manufacturer to calibrate, but this can be a real pain if you don't have a second body as it leaves you without a camera for a while. The beauty of microadjustment programmed in is that you can standardize your entire arsenal of equipment yourself as new lenses are purchased or upgrading bodies. Now if only the manufacturers could figure out that they need to create some sort of testing procedure to include with the body for consistent results.

On a side note, I have to credit with Olympus as having the most though out system for this so far in that they accept input for corrections at both the wide and long end of a zoom and each of the individual focus points. They just need to realize that they need to provide a software option for entering this slew of information.

Program Line

I think the MTF line only works with the more modern pentax 'chipped' lenses or AF lenses - I'm not 100% sure. I would imagine the only way the camera can determine the sharpest performance on a lens, especially a zoom, at a given focal length would be to somehow embed an MTF chart data when coupling with the camera.

I have tried this with a A50 1.7 and it would try to set aperture to f/22 which I know shouldn't be the MTF program line value. Not sure how if it works with a 3rd party lens.
