how would you improve the K-70?

- lack of ability to use build in flash as commander!!!
I understand this to be business decision as K-50 had this.

- I would gladly swap WiFi for GPS
WiFi is no use to me as this requires me to disconnect from internet in order to grab some photos that I want to quickly upload to internet.
Bluetooth would be so much better, GPS would be even better.

- USB charging
Its 21st century, we really should have option to charge camera using USB

I'm using Panasonic/Sanyo Eneloop NiMH (white ones) and IKEA 2450 (which are rebranded Eneloop Pro (black version)).

As for charger I only use 'smart' chargers. My current one is bc-700. It only charger at 700mA so its gentle for batteries, unfortunately it takes about 3h to fully charge AA battery. But I stock plenty.

KP vs K-70 - to KP or not to KP, that is the question

Got my K-70 as Black Friday deal with £100 off and DA50 thrown is for free :-). Can't complain.

K-70 looks and feel very similar to my K-50.
Few buttons moved places + there is one extra button for wifi/fx2.
Screen gives impression of being smaller.
GUI is modified with some additional options that were not there in K-50.

Sensor on K-70 blew my mind. I get so much more details it is really superb. I wonder if this is mostly due to higher sensor resolution or low pass filter omission.

Biggest down side for me is lack of wireless flash trigger function. There is now manual flash control tough.
Not exactly 1:1 exchange but it is something. I can only hope Pentax (or some 3rd party) will release small flash with trigger function, as neither AF200 not AF201 have this, or I get myself ACON trigger for next Christmas.

And it is only available in black and silver finish. No storm trooper white ;-(

Can't comment on KP.

K-50 / K-500 Aperture Solenoid fix (DIY with pics)

My K-50 suddenly started suffering from dark frames few weeks ago.

I gathered couple old laptop CD/DVD drives in hope I will be able to devour solenoid from one of these.

I have removed bottom and front cover from my camera and located faulty solenoid (as per instruction from first page. No need to remove top cover). Now having clear view on failed part I opened first DVD-ROM drive disc tray, and behold, solenoid used in tray opening mechanism was almost identical to the one in camera. One difference I have notices is that magnet used in DVD drive solenoid is slightly (1mm) higher than the one in the camera but all external/important dimensions were the same.
Using small scissors I cut ribbon cable solenoid in DVD drive was soldered to and gently removed it from enclosure, making sure I do not break tiny wires. Now using precise soldering iron and ‘third hand’ I desoldered what was left of ribbon cable.
Now back to camera. Desoldered two wires going to solenoid, unscrew it and removed from camera. Put new solenoid in its place and solder the wires to it. I have put both covers temporarily back on and tested camera. It was not working any better. After some deliberation I flipped little magnet in solenoid upside down. And camera spring back to life. I have make about hundred test photos since. All well exposed.

HINT ON SOLDERING: Before soldering make sure wires are wetted with solder and put some soldering flux on both soldered parts
HINT TO HINT: if you do not have soldering flux at hand you can use some clear alcohol (Polish vodka is the best and has so many more uses :-) )

Internal resistance (measured using cheap Chinese multi-meter) of both parts :
- Original green Pentax solenoid: 14 ohm
- DVD ripped solenoid: 26 ohm

Btw. I do not recommend soldering wires midway as this is actually more difficult to do and involves way more solder and heat.

Tools I have used:
- precise screwdrivers set (B&Q 6GBP) with proper size handles
Do not use those small all metal chinese made 'precise' screwdrivers.
Those have small handles and are usually made with some soft steel.
- precise soldering iron set (includes some solder with flux, precise pliers) (Amazon 17GBP)
Either but proper soldering iron or do not buy it at all.
Soldering station available from German shop starting with 'L' won't do as it doesn't have right tip.
Soldering irons available in diy shop do not allow for temperature control and don't have right tip.
- soldering flux (Amazon ~2GBP)
- small scissors (wife)
- third hand (Amazon)

Good luck.

Very Large K-1 RAW files

File size is not indication of image size

For completeness:
Raw data from K-1 sensor is:
36Mpx * 14bit per photo cell = 60MB
If DNG from K-1 are 45MB in size this indicates some compression is applied.

My beaten up K-50 can do wireless master and control mode. While it is not deal breaker it is a disappointment :-(

I'm not using wireless flash control extensively, but it proved to be useful at times (off camera flash with minimal equipment).

Hello from rainy UK.

After much deliberation I have bought my first DSLR few years back (K-50) and it is serving me well since.
I also own several lenses. Although I'm still waiting for my 50-135* and 300* (Santa are you reading this?)

I mostly take portraitures of my beautiful daughters and wife as well as occasional wildlife and astro photo (with my Q10 for further reach).

I have found PF about 12 month ago (and I'm checking it daily) but never had a need to post. Until now.

Best regards
