You DON'T have to buy one - if you are happy with your existing gear, how will it affect you ? ---------- Post added 06-02-22 at 01:40 AM ----------
Sorry that's nonsense - if you really drive a sportscar you will learn left foot braking and gear selection to increase your overall handling - not just put your right foot down heavily.

What's the issue. If someone doesn't like modern gear and the way it's developing, let them pick a camera they are comfortable with its' abilities - no one forces anyone to use the 'latest and greatest'. On the other hand, if that someone is really worried that a 5 year old with the 'latest and greatest' will create better images than them - then shame on them, they chose the level the were willing to work to !

Can't agree, my cameras (of various brands including Pentax), my car, library, possesions etc are chosen to meet specfic demands and/or are merely tools used to deliver a satisfying experience. People who allow their possessions to define them are shallow by definition.

A bit of a contrived staement there as you do need a camera in the first place and you do need to have the skill to use it in order to get an image to the post process stage as no software can recover blown highlights/shadows, out of focus or badly blurred images.
So a professional photographer cannot use photo editing ? Or if they can how much is too much ? Do you assume there is no skill or knowledge required to phot edit ?

I wonder how many seeing the 'sad state' of photography have cars or operate their TVs without remotes, still use 8mm film, vinyl records, sony walkmans and other such technologies which have been superceded through technical advance - or is Photography considered to be the untouchable even though most photographers (even those who like to call themselves 'TOGS' and love to spend hours discussing 'circles of confusion' ) use digital cameras and lenses made almost optically pefect through the use of state of the art equipment.

I suggest you take a look at ON1 RAW, you can try before you buy and it will quite happily use your existing file structure. It's reasonably easy to learn the basics, there's a goodly amount of Youtube videos and Scott Davenport's book 'On1 Photo RAW Essentials' book is very good.

I use both Panasonic m43rds and Pentax - recently I've begun to invest in Laowa manul lenses as they are operationally the same for both formats and although there is not a terrific range (5 lenses) they are generally fast and rectilinear.
mpb have quite a few lenses from sigma and tamron, including a personal favourite the f1.4 50mm. I appreciate that's not what tou're looking for so in m43rds Panasonic lens range includes 50-200 (app £1k), 100-300 (app £500) and 100-400 (app £1K) and you really need a Panasonic G9 (app £ 850) to bring out the best in them. NB double the ranges for 'equivalence'.

I'm afraid that in your rush to pontificate you broke one of the more basic 'rules' and rather missed that my point was made somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but never mind.

Many people like the statement "learn the rules and then break them" - so what is the point of learning them? Will a viewer look at a final image and say something along the lines of " My goodness, that image is so poorly constructed, the creator must REALLY know the rules !
Are we individual creative photographers ? I would hope so. But the focus on 'rules' by cut and paste educators means many new photographers look for the 'safe space' that is conformance rather than experiment.

Probably not of interest to those who don't like processing, so they can just pass on by, but
Perhaps not easy but very achievable in a relatively short time using either single or multiple shots layers and blend modes.

I'm in a similar position - Panasonics G9 & GX8 and Pentax KS & KP - If I need a lightweight, need the reach of the 100-400 lens or am just out on a recce I grab the Panasonic, otherwise and especially if it's astro I use the Pentax K3 II - quite often I'll shoot the same scene with both.

I'm afraid my choice was not down to loyalty to the brand, a cupboard full of old lenses or any great technical analysis - let's face it, most serious cameras are really pretty good - it was simply down to the fact that I shoot land and seascapes, spend quite some time in deserts and shoot astro - at the time Pentax offered, at a very good price, the best all round features to meet those conditions.

Totally agree - too many photographers assess an image by it conforming to all sorts of minutiae and psuedo tech and generalise across all genres when really it's more about meeting the demands of one's artistic intent.

Added Sigma 18-35 before my last road trip - great results; now added a Sigma 18-300 to act as a coverall walkabout lens during a family holiday later on this year, results in test shots so far have better than I expected.

Took the KP out to a local beach area as a quick check it was working OK - this was shot handheld in Av with the base settings that come in the camera with the exception of a bit of exposure compensation. Minimal post processing. The lens was the 18-270.

interested_observer and mikesbike - Both - Thanks for all that info. The KP is new to me, I normally use a Panasonic G9. When bracketing I normally blend them myself, but as I was working through the manual I was looking for a description of what the various effects were. I shoot mainly landscapes and am taking another trip to SW USA in a couple of weeks and planning to try - normal shooting, normal bracketing, DOF bracketing, stacking etc etc on a few locations so I can understand the differences and base future work on them.
Thanks again,
steveb.

@mikesbike - What I couldn't find was exactly what HDR 1,2, etc resulted in and I can't find anything in the manual to describe their effects, so I shot the same image using the range and basically came up with the non-empirical answer that 1,2,3 are essentially like volume controls only 3 is more like '11'. It would appear that they increase the vibrancy and local contrast of the predominant colours within the image; AUTO appears to be as you suggest and Advanced - no idea, all I saw was AUTO and Advanced in the test gave basically the same result as HDR 1.
Thanks for the tip re Fine Sharpening, so easily missed when going thro' the manual.

When you select HDR there are a number of options - Auto, HDR1, HDR2, HDR3, Advanced HDR and OFF.
Is there a description anywhere as to what these settings mean ?
TIA.
