IR conversions

I don't have any experience with the 645 lenses but my guess would be if you have older versions of the lenses produced at the same time the 67 lenses were being produced they will do just fine -- they should have the same coatings as the 67 lenses. If you have newer versions with Pentax's recent coatings I'd think they would perform more like DFA lenses. Modern lens coatings, at least in the Pentax line, is great for regular photography but as one of their features seem to be optimized to reduce IR transmission and I think this is why the DFA lenses I've tested work so poorly.

I'll vote b&w also -- the pen really pops in b&w and gets a little muddled in the color version. Great shot here and the ones in the Zeiss thread also!

I got old and my 4x5 got to heavy. And the Pentax 67 wasn't much lighter. And don't get me started on the cost of film and processing ... hence full-frame digital.

This is going to sound strange but if you are going to be loading your own film try to keep your fingernail on the finger next to your thumb or your middle finger a little longer than normal -- this will help you to slip your nail under the top of the film to grasp only the very top when loading and unloading. You'll see what I mean when you try loading a sheet. Sacrifice a sheet of film or use a blown exposure sheet to practice in daylight before trying with your hands in a changing bag. Also beware with older film holders the grooves on the side may be a little tight and make it a little more difficult to get the film in and out -- it varies with holder and use/abuse the holders have been through. It all becomes second nature after a while.

If it hasnt been mentioned earlier in the thread some upgrades I'd like to see would be software based -- a focus stacking function, more options in multi-exposure mode so you could vary the exposures of the different images being merged, continued improvements to pixel shift.

Diffraction be damned!

I had set myself the goal of becoming better with select focus but my old large format days got the better of me and I found myself back at F22 for this shot. Also my first pixel shift attempts -- some sharpening but not much else -- seems there is a lot to learn and experiment with but I am wondering how much if any pixel shift helps fight the effects of diffraction -- this shot without pixel shift actually looks very slightly sharper in the highlight areas in lightroom until I added a little sharpening to the pixel shift file and brought down the highlights slightly. Have any of you experimented along these lines?

If what the reviews on this site say about the Pentax 200mm being even sharper than this lens are true that must be a monster of a lens -- hopefully someday it will get updated.

I am enjoying this lens ....

woops -- that's actually the F16 version, the F22 version has very slightly more depth of field but you get the point ...

I'd love a wide angle tilt/shift like the Canon 17 but as a previous poster mentioned probably to specialized and would be pretty expensive. A lens optimized for IR would be cool but also to specialized. Does anyone know what lenses Pentax recommended for use with the KP IR body or did this body never actually happen?

Overall though I'd just be happy if the 21mm arrives soon and is reasonably priced.

Great stuff! Back in the day my brother and his 3 dogs used to help me get my 4x5 into the backcountry -- all 3 dogs had their own packs and carried gear for us. The goldens were great but the border collie had a million maneuvers for dumping her pack. Our first trip out she was carrying the fifteen year old single malt scotch and some baileys and managed to ditch her pack. Never did find it. After that she only carried her own food and dog treats and learned real fast not to ditch that one ... Brings back fun memories ...

I don't see any problem with the rebadges. I have the 15-30 and think it's an excellent lens. I would love Pentax to do something like a 17-28 or 16-35 or even update its older 20-40 so that filters could easily be used. At least the upcoming 21mm limited will fill this slot unitl other lenses can be released.

As others have mentioned I think there are a fair number of dual users here. Another reason this may not be as bad (Good Thing) is because anyone who does switch thinking the Sony grass is greener will still have kept their Pentax lenses. They may well find Pentax or dslrs in general suited their needs just fine and because they retained their Pentax lenses find it easy to pick up a Pentax body again whereas if they've also sold all their lenses to move to Sony chances are they would be just as likely to move to Canon or Nikon as come back to Pentax.

11:00 to 3:00 bright sun in a forest, or on a waterfall or pretty much just about any landscape. Landscapes where harsh shadows would necessitate hdr techniques ..... IR gives a different perspective and works well for midday landscapes in these circumstances where otherwise I'd probably only be scouting for golden hours/sunrise/sunset shots for the K-1.

I agree that it would be nice if people spread out more and hopefully Europe and the rest of the world will open in time and help relieve the congestion in some of our parks. I spent 15 years as a part-time landscape photographer so I'm well aware there are lesser known parks, and have traveled extensively on BLM and national forest lands. However, it sounds like you are based in the West where these areas are easily accessible -- I'm in eastern PA -- we have a wonderful park system including one that I consider my second favorite location east of the Mississipi after Acadia, but there are no (real) mountains, deserts, BLM or national forest lands. And yes, I've been throughout the White Mountains, Green Mountains and Adirondacks, all also heavily visited. With one week of vacation locations for us have to be one days drive of eastern PA to be viable. As far as I am aware the US-Canada border remains closed so Canada is not an option. I've been blessed, I've seen all the "famous" parks (this is my 8th time in Acadia, for example), but my wife was not so blessed. Till I took her to Zion 2 years ago she had never visited a national park, and never been west of the Poconos. Seeing Acadia last year and again this year has made her enthusiastic about being outdoors and she absolutely fell in love with the park. Should she and people like her not have the option to visit parks they havent seen because they are overcrowded and people should spread out? The parks are there for all people -- that was there original mandate. My nieces and nephews have not been here and I hope to be able to take them to many of my favorite places, be they in remote BLM lands like Bisti, or popular parks like Yosemite, Yellowstone, Acadia and the Smokies.

In addition, If I have to pay taxes to pay for the salaries, pensions, benefits and infrastructure of the National Park system then I expect to have access to the places I am paying for.

I thought I'd add a few comments here also since this thread is a nice update to the $100 to photograph a cow thread $100 Charge To Photograph A Single Cow! - PentaxForums.com

I'm currently waiting for heavy rains to lift in Acadia National Park and thought I'd take the time to report on new regulations the Park Service has instituted. Even with our National Parks pass we found that going up Cadillac Mountain or driving Ocean Drive requires a new additional limited pass whose fees are not included in your annual National Parks pass and whose advance purchase sells out quickly. No passes were available for Cadillac Mountain. When I complained to the Park Service I was told this was to ensure access to all and when I asked how that was working for me the little tw#t ranger told me to make the left turn and leave the park as I was holding up the entrance line. We've found other trails and other locations to visit but parking is a problem in every location, even lesser used trailheads -- Jordan Pond and all the lots along the road completely full. Despite the fact that the Park Service has been aware of the increasing park visitation there has been very little expansion of facilities and parking to accommodate the increased visitation. For example, since our visit last year some of the roads including route 3 have been repaved -- there are several areas of the road near trailheads where it is impossible to find parking where the shoulder could have easily been widened slightly to accommodate safe roadside parking. Since the repaving was being done anyway how much more would this have cost the State working with the National Park Service.

For the Cadillac Mountain entrance there is a new shack to check reservations starting at 4:30AM. In addition to the 2 rangers checking the reservations there are 2 additional rangers with 2 new law enforcement SUVs with flashing lights that stand in the middle of the road the entire day. There are also additional personnel at the Ocean Drive entrance. Think of the cost of this -- salaries, overtime, benefits, vehicles, signs, reservation system and personnel, etc. The Park Service claims this is a limited trial program but as one who remembers the institution of the then "temporary" free backcountry permit system meant "to study park use patterns" morph into an expensive, limited use system which has closed off access to vast areas of the parks and temporary shuttle systems become permanent, mandatory use systems I think we can safely assume temporary means permanent and to be expanded in the future. Backcountry passes at Grand Canyon cost more than cheap hotels. What are the chances this remains a temporary program?

This new system has also been instituted in Zion National Park and possibly other parks. At Zion the reservation is available only 2 weeks in advance for a specific time slot on the shuttle bus. Dont' get a reservation and you are out of luck. Miss the time slot for your shuttle and you are out of luck. Try buying plane tickets (if you even want to fly), book hotel rooms, rent a vehcile to get to the destination on the chance you might be able to get one of the limited passes for the shuttle bus.

In over 50 years of visiting parks I've seen fees rise dramatically and access decrease exponentially. For all of you younger guys and gals considering a career or part-time career as a landscape photographer in the United States, or simply someone who wants to take their children to visit areas that have been set aside for all Americans and all people to visit let your representative know how you feel about current Park Service polices, write your congress critters, and make your voice heard at the Department of Interior/National Park Service. Otherwise one day we'll all wake up and find these treasures impossible to access. Probably won't be my lifetime but it certainly will be for you younger folks.

I'm not in the market for this as I am full frame but my guess would be in the $1400 - $1500 level. That leaves a nice space for an increase in the K-1 iii to the $2200 level. Hopefully with increased features both cameras will attract new buyers to the brand.

Is it the general feeling here that the new 21mm will be released at the same time? Would the pricing of this be along the lines of the existing 31mm -- approx. $700 - $800?
