Did anyone else catch the episode of curse of oak island where they lowered a guy into a well to take pictures. He was using a Pentax. Not sure what model but it was nice to see our ugly ducking brand used for a prime time show.

Working with the K-10 reminds me of shooting with film. there are limitations to be aware of, but the results can be oh so pleasing.

RICOH WG-30 and WG-30w

Lets not overlook the importance of these types of products. A couple of years ago I bought a WG2. I wanted something small but rugged to take with me on a Big Horn sheep hunt. Over the last couple of years I have found I have taken far more pictures with this camera than my K-10. (which I plan on upgrading from). I realize the limitations of the WG series in comparison to even my K-10, however the convenience of having it with me, and not worrying about the elements makes up of some of them.

Additionally now that I work in heavy construction I frequently need to be able to take pictures on the jobsite. I have found the rugged nature of these cameras to be a great benefit. ( 100 feet in the air in a manlift with 20 MPH winds the tether is comforting). For me as well the digital microscope feature has been very handy. (capturing numbers on flanges at awkward positions and poor lighting).

In fact I have probably recommended a WG series camera to more people than a K series body. living in Colorado, and working construction, a robust, reliable camera can be more of a useful tool than a superior but bulkier body.

Ask yourself this, "will more people who think they want to get into photography buy Pentax because of the K mount systems, or because they have seen and used their less expensive point and shoots and been impressed with them" ?

While I have a few wishes that I hope Pentax fulfills, I will not complain when they roll out new products, but will wait until I find the one I want. Until then my K-10 still proves to be sufficient for my needs.

Task specific grips

What I would see is a line of camera bodies designed around this type of grip accessory. It wouldn't be backwards compatible, but future bodies could would be designed with the new grips in mind. I am not a tech guy so I don't know if something like USB 3.0 or firewire would be the connection method, but that should be an easy enough workaround.
It seems a system such as this would be a major change in camera systems. It does seem reminiscent of the LX days.

Task specific grips

Just curious to see how many people would be interested in a system where as opposed to a battery grip, a company offered task specific grips. For example a video grip that offered sound recording and controls, perhaps even a auxiliary image processor designed for video. Or a sports grip that offered a larger buffer, additional card slots etc. Or a studio grip that offered different flash controls, and whatever flash people use (I'm not one of them) tethering wifi etc.

It would seem to me given the amount of empty space in the battery grips, there is a lot of room for the necessary hardware to customize the grips for different applications. Again even the possibility of alternate image processors. As I see it the primary advantage for a camera manufacturer would be that rather than designing a camera that satisfies everyone's needs, it could be customized by the final purchaser. Furthermore it would increase sales of accessories.

Just a thought.

I just bought a WG 2 to take elk and bighorn sheep hunting here in Colorado. So far I love the camera. Your shots show some of the potential of this little gem. I have to say, having it on my hip is so much easier than carryng my K-10 everywhere. will try to add some of my photos.

My pilgrimage to Mecca (B&H In NYC)

For those of us who have never been to B&H in NYC I will report my experience from this past weekend. This was my first trip to NYC, and coming from a very small town in it was interesting. Walking into B&H was a little bit like the pictures of the trading floor at the NY stock exchange. People everywhere random chaos like I have never seen. When you arrive at the DSLR area you will notice everything you have ever dreamt about owning in cases around the perimeter. Don't do like I did and go to one of these areas to look at a camera, these people are here to take your order. There are display kiosks in the center of the room where you can handle the goods, talk to a salesperson about the camera, get the hands on experience. Another piece of advice for a B&H virgin. look at their catalog and know first hand what you want to handle. I was so overwhelmed by the store I left without purchasing anything. (it was only 3 hours later when my brain finally caught up I realized there were several pieces of gear I should have bought). the unfortunate side effect of staying in NYC, dinner at a place in Rockefeller center, drinks etc, I blew my K-5 budget before I even handeled one. (CBA now kicks in to critical stage). I will upgrade my K-10 to a K-5 or its successor, but for now I will just focus on being better technically. On a side note for those travelling to NYC, go wide or bring you P&S. I took a bus tour, and using my Viv 28 f2.8 (the widest high quality glass I have) I can say I wish I had wider. (12-24 anyone)

Best of luck to all and please share your B&H experiences with everyone (or any other store)

What's the cheapest audio recorder with XLR inputs?

Yamaha makes a couple of Audio interfaces that USB to a laptop if you are set up stationary. I think I paid @ $100 for the one I have. Came with cubase AI 4 so all and all a pretty good deal. Haven't really looked at handhelds. Sweetwater has some pretty good prices for audio gear.

Combining K5 & Flip Hd - audio & video

So far the biggest problem I have run into is the poor video quality in bad light of the flip. I haven't worked enough with the KX to figure out how to get consistent results. Have tried a Sony bloggie and have had somewhat better results.

none taken, and I realize I was drifting OT. I don't have a K-5 (still shoot a k-10), but would like to get one and video is an important feature for me. I hope some of the issues are resolved before I get one. I am not concerned with the audio issues, more concerned with the lack of manual controls. I have fooled with video on a KX with somewhat mixed results. I'm sure it just takes more practice.

Combining K5 & Flip Hd - audio & video

I am currently working on several different projests shot with a flip and a KX. Audio was recorded seperatly using a Yamaha interface and sure beta 58. As far as audio synch goes it is a little tedious to get it perfect ,but not really that hard. From my personnal experience it if far more difficult to edit the video (WB, exposure etc) than the audio. I really would like a K-5 for the video portion but until hoya gives us full manual control, I will hold off. (yes i know it is a camera not a vidcam)

hate to reply to my own post, but wanted to add the video(and audio) I previously posted was shot with a flip video recorder and then the audio processed with sony acid. Mods I think this should be discussed in the video section, but it's here for now. I have to say, the audio processing was easier for me (and my computer), by far, than the video. So any worries about the K-5's audio should be minimal. Hand held field recorders are getting very cheap these days and it is pretty easy to synch the audio to a video. I wish I had had 2 K-5's and a hand held panny for that concert instead of the flip. come on powerball. BTW anybody who has suggestions on how to better post the video please help. I still have the original files.

here it the link to the you tube video I edited.

You Tube

There is also a video I shot that night with these guys doing the song more than a name on a wall, which is fantastic. I just shot some video of our band playing last night with a sony version of a flip. i'm pretty impressed so far. I know this is a little OT, but I do wish I had someone shooting with a K-5 along with the other sources. I've fooled around with my friends KX for video and it seems to me audio should be the least of anyones worries.
I will say having salvaged some really poor audio recordings from my band in the past, worry about the video. audio processing software is amazing.

I've just started with video but have used a similar process recently. I record a lot of audio for my band. Another procedure you can use is take the audio file from your video in Premier (I use elements) then edit the audio using software such as sony acid or Cubase and then add the edited audio back to the video. Did this recently for another band with a flip video. the video was terrible but the audio excellent.

Hi all, just wondered if anyone else was noticed the firmware update for the KX won't download on the Pentax USA site. I borrowed a friends KX to shoot some video, and noticed they still have fw 1.0 so I tried to update it but no luck. hopefully they will fix the problem.

LumoLabs: Shutter induced blur (or not) with the Pentax K-5 camera

Just out of curiosity, does anybody know who makes the shutter in the K-5 and K-7? I just wonder if there are other camera brands using the same shutter assemblies, and if they show similar shutter induced blur. I suspect this problem may be more difficult to correct if indeed it is the a combination of the shutter mechanism, mirror, sensor, and body, as all of these components are not made by the same company.

Just my random thought for today.

do you think Pentax can go head to head with Canon 1Dx and Nikon Dx series in sports?

I still believe if Pentax wanted to make a run at the pro sports photogs, it would not prove that difficult to do. For one thing most sports are outdoors, hence WR is very important. Often Longer lenses are used, so the APS-C 1.5 crop works to your advantage. (People cry we don't have a 300 2.8, no we have a 200 2.8( that acts like a 300 2.8)). For Pentax to compete in sports we need, high fps, large buffer, cutting edge AF, high ISO, good ergonomics, WR. Lets see here, K-5 meets many of these specs(at least on paper, we'll see when production units are in hand). Should Pentax want to move forward in specific areas as sports, video, studio etc, I think a more modular system using different grips would be most advanageous. If you shoot sports, offer a sports grip with additional card slots and increased buffer size. If you shoot video a grip that offers sound inputs and perhaps shoulder support might be better. If studio a grip that offers uber flash control and tethering. The possibilities are amazing. Buy this one body, customize it to your needs.
OK starting to ramble , too much Vodka!
