Shooting IR with k-1 II

Given the K-1ii has, like the huge majority of cameras , a IR filter on the sensor, well, the best way is to shoot IR with film, develop the film, put a slide duplicator on your K-1ii and enjoy a huge megapixel IR photo taken from the film with the K-1ii. :)

The FA 400mm is excellent. Like the 300mm, better use a heating colar on the front side if you wonder outdoors in the upcoming winter :-).both have tendencies not liking temperature variations, which the Z can withstand !

After Leica, I always expected Fujifilm to release a monochrome camera before any other.
Well, I'm really happy Pentax did it. I honestly don't care if it's aps-c or FF. For what monochrome is usually intended, aps-c is perfectly fine. Actually if I had to choose between K3iii mono & K1iii mono or future K2 mono, I'd stay with the K3iii because of the size and weight.
Eager to have one and use it asap.

Subjective opinion - FA Limiteds HD v SMC

Well, I just find coating from the 1970-80's of something like the k28 2 very good. Intact until now, very good. These coatings are older than me, I was born in 85, they age better than I do lol.
And actually I bought 2 hds (43&31) and put the smcs on sale. Then after testing 2-3 , days changed my mind, returned them and cancelled the smcs selling process. I ended up with only one HD limited, the 21.
I work with press, magazines, online & paper. Also industry - high end , agriculture.. , fashion and advertising. Cover cool & known events too. I do business headshots and actors, some models too. I shoot from high ranked officials & int. ceos to employees in factories (what's left of them in western Europe..lol). I shoot most with SMC glass. Studio, outdoor , indoor. Daylight, night. Flash or no flash . Nobody in the pics or from the agencies, told me my pics lacked clarity, focus, were fuzzy or dreamy, bokeh way too busy or shown general disappointment. Clients usually come back, if we manage to talk through our differences. All this, while standards in the business are high for visual quality.
I do direct wifi from the k-1ii s or cable thetering. Or post process when the delays are longer and pp is needed. Things would not change with HD coatings, whatever the camera, MF or FF, whatever the sensor CCD or CMOS or foveon alike. Same stuff happens, same routine, when I use the HDs I have.
At the end of the day on my screens I see missed shots and good shots, some shitty shots and sometimes, rarely, some amazing shots.
That's all that matter. Objectively, coating is at the end of the (wish) list. Unless Pentax makes us a fluorite lens to use, then yes, that would really reaaaallly matter :)

SMC Pentax FA 24mm F2.0 questions

Oh god.
It's not a lens that focus shifts. That, supposing the lens is not completely out of calibration.
The phase detection makes AF at 2.0. if you shoot at another aperture you'll always have a slight focus shift.
For example, also, to better undestand too : if you adjust with micro adjust AF with your lens closed at 2.8 , when you open it to shoot at 2.0, you'll get some minor focus shift on your picture.
The marvelous FA* 24mm F2 in good working condition is totally incapable of focus shifting by itself. It's the type of usage and optical physics that creates the phenomenon of focus shifting.

SMC Pentax FA 24mm F2.0 questions

Try focusing with live view.
If it gets tack sharp then it means you'll just have to micro adjust the AF.
If not , dsable SR , sometimes it messes around with some focal lengths & lenses
If not again, what speed are you using ? Diaphragm system might be a little worn out, causing a tiny slower closure/opening. Conducting to loss in sharpness.
It not again bis, then there's some minor misalignment -> send it for repair.
Hope this helps.
NB : if you too test a 24mm like brainless testers on the web against a straight brick wall and find extreme corners not in focus, it doesn't mean that the the lens is not a good lens. It's just a 24mm and this is normal. And...actually 24mm are designed more for architecture or photoreporters than for landscapes. For classic landscapes, start with 28mm. 28mm are also way better than 24mm for stiched panoramas. 30-35mm even better.
Anyway, I've seen many photographers disappointed by lenses that are actually excellent (yours has obviously a problem because you seem smarter) just because they don't have enough clues about stuff like front & behind dof limits, not to speak about general optics comprehension.

Subjective opinion - FA Limiteds HD v SMC

I always thought that the photographer adapts the lens to his shootings. That he's not adapting himself and his shootings to the lens. And clearly not to the lens coating. We use the light, we have our eyes to see, our feet to move, our voice to interact and/or command, and so on.
If the lens is good enough with nice characteristics, if the camera works, last thing to worry about is the coating or +1 or -1 in the number of blades.
As it goes, in the good hands an old smc Pentax - Zeiss K 28 2 still beats a a new HD 31 1.8 to the ground . Same thing with an SMC A 50 1.2 vs HD DFA 1.4 (crazy lens if you need huge prints of course..). Having the four of them, it makes no doubt. While I enjoy and favour progress, i find that going from SMC to HD is a progress but why apply it to the already excellent Ltd trio lenses ?.
As for assignments work, it's even more irrelevant as you are much more in control of situations (light, setup, models etc) so it's even much more easier to make a lens adaptable to your needs.
Also, personally I always shoot with the post processing that will have to be done in my mind, if the lens has some defects that I can't sort out differently while shooting with it.
So, in conclusion, this kind of updates to lenses are totally irrelevant imo for most of the photographers. While other type of minor improvements in optics (like closer focusing, improved elements) , mechanics or ergonomics would be much more relevant ...

Adding a little edit : same thing for 645 lenses. I really don't follow the logic of the SMC FA 35mm updated to HD (tested both with colourfull tissues - seen nothing particular) . Or even much more bizarre , the 25mm SMC FA updated to HD DA , with that bizarre new hood and vignetting issues. Ok SDM rocks on on the DA version of course , focusing is great but why change the f* hood and go from FA to DA ? (Had the DA from the start, finally tested both, then I decided to keep the FA version).
And as it comes for prices, why do HD come more expensive than SMC on the market for the same lens? I mean all the R&D, patents, etc was done years ago for the same lens, why pay more just for a new coating & a new iris blade? It should be the opposite imo -> equally priced or even Cheaper than the original SMC versions.

PENTAX needs more new blood than it needs new coatings.

Kiron 20mm (prototype?)

Totally agree they look 100% similar. I had the Cosina, results were mediocre. Not the case with the Kiron. This is why i think they must be optically different.

The Kiron produces more vignettage than the Cosina, but it's really much more sharp. And, there's no halo in highlights wide open with the Kiron version.
I'll post some pics for comparison tomorrow (once i also reactivate some space for upload here).

nota bene : Tested on K-1 ii, Mz-6 , Z1 & Z1p, all 4 cameras read max aperture 4. I don't remember the readout from the Cosina, i'll have to check the exifs in older pics.

Yes, thanks for the reminder ! Very useful article on pentaxforums about this issue. Hopefully, not the case with this model, everything fine with the cameras.

very wrong statement.

usually, in industry, prototype numbers for products are usually related to date of manufacture and a product tracking number.

so a prototype can start as well with a 9 . like '92. or any number ,depending of the product number, year, month..

gets even more complicated if letters sum up with digits of course.

but thank you for the link, i've just parsed the last 130 messages in various topics mentioning "20mm" , nothing besides nikon 20mm & vivitar & cosina or zooms. As i'm sure it's a different design from cosina & vivitar, maybe it ended up with voigtlander with slight modifications. or other brands, other mounts.. but i still have to parse through the oldest 100 messages on the kiron group.maybe the answer is somewhere around there :) thanks for the hint

Hello fellow pentaxians,

By any chance anyone else uses a rather great wide angle made by Kiron ? a stunning 20mm 3.8 in KA mount.
Didn't find any info about it.

what i can tell is that it doesn't look at all like the vivitar and cosina versions (i owned one and comparing they seem very different, optically too). image quality is very different too, highly better : razor sharp center, less distorsion, good sharpness in far corners (actually i find it very good) and there's some nice smooth transition and bokeh with this lens. Works like a charm on K-1.

I don't have a voigtlander 20mm to compare with.
Any ideas?

here's a link with pictures of the lens : bmdphoto

Would be pleased to hear some of you have it, use it and like it too , as the lens isn't listed on the database and google doesn't return any info for any mount whatsoever.

I honestly don't have the answer to your question but glad to see you're using the Z for videov! :) It does a great job even handheld if you handheld rightfully (used it a few times when lacking my movie gear after photoshoots. Concerts and rush for press, some stuff for music rehearsals for bands and was also amazed by the mic quality . The 90mm lens stabilization helped a lot and for ultra wide angles everything was smooth).
Good luck with your issue, I mostly came in to share my thoughts about Pentax cameras being so bad for filming. I really don't think they are if you don't need 4K and compression formats and some pro features.

Is it count as photography ??
Posted By phat_bog

Short answer :YES,
Long answer : YES it does count and will always do, no matter your opinion, my opinion , all the forum members' opinions and any other opinion. some will agree some will not, the definitive answer will always be Yes for some, and since is Yes for some, regardeless of the amount or percentage of Yes or No, the answer will still be Yes. That's the great thing and sometimes the awful thing about art. the final answer is always Yes.
imo this is great as art is a field of freedom and positivity, that escapes the rules, restrictive or not, that we made for everything else. to sum up, if yeses and nos would count as we're used for them to count elsewhere,, there would be no point for any form of art to exist. The No is the as much the enemy as the friend of art, as the Yes is a friend and an enemy. this way every form and product of art is free to enter the world of art. and this also explains why it is useless to compare the prices of a work of art to the price to the prices of any product or service which are all bound by rules.

my opinion on this article :
we have our own lobbies here in Europe too, but they do things and act less out in the open like they do and act in the US.
imo, if you care about your eyes and your brain, avoid any close interaction with electronic viewfinders, unless it is for very short usage or need it for short usage in for research purposes (microscopes).
photographers in the digital era, we already spend enough time in front of computer screens, EVFs is just too much.
electronic viewfinders are bad for photographers' brains and eyes, and that's enough for me to stick with OVFs , with DSLR and with telemetric cameras.

Pentax is doing fine. no such thing as doomed anyway soon. buy with confidence.
the only complaints i had with pentax over the last 10 years is the crappy tech support in France. and this happened because of the crappy french contractors here. Pentax is only to blame for having chosen 2 bad companies to work with in France.
Pentax were a bit "prisoners" for their tech support with them and this gave headaches to some pro users like myself.

things changed 2 years after Ricoh came into play and a new tech support company now covers ricoh imaging products.

other than that, i still actively use 645z for 7 years (no complaints after +200.000 shots) after using a 645D for the same amount of shots and which i still use from time to time. i also had luck with the KP, K3 which never failed. i use 2 K-1 ii too , both bought after selling my 2 working k-1workhorses, both failed in the first months, but with the new company in France that covers repairs for Pentax, everything went smooth and easy.

If you extensively use Sony , Canon, Nikon, Hasselblad, Leica, Fuji, you will also have loads of tech failures coming up and the complaints that go with these failures. (personally, i had failings with sony A7r ii & iii, fuji Gfx50, digital back and lenses from other brands)

the tech support and repair companies are full of failing cameras and lenses from all photograpy brands and manufacturers.

Pentax is doing no worse than others and it still outstands them on some points on the same way other brands outstand each other or outstand Pentax on some points.

:)

had the opportunity to acquire the pentax 645 to k adapter a while ago, but only tested recently.
the best combos i found out to be really usefull are:

- 645 FA 400mm 5.6 + adapter , and also FA 400mm 5.6 + 1.4x tc + adapter. both awesome results. haven't tried with the 2x tc yet.

- 645 FA 120mm 4 macro + adapter and also FA 120mm 4 macro + 1.4x tc + adapter. amazing results for macro work with both setups.

a very pleasent lens to work with is also the 645 FA 150mm 2.8 on the K-1 or K-1 ii. Marvelous bokeh, sharpness, pleasent and easy focus , and you can also focus closer when mounted on full frame with the adapter than when mounted on MF.

hope this can help !

hi Barondla, i'll test to confirm this in a day or two . until then i dont't see why auto aperture wouldn't work with the TC and the extension tubes. Otherwise , what's for sure , the helicoid adapter won't work for aperture control. i do ask myself at what extent the internal Shake reduction will be effective with tubes or extenders

The MH-RA 49 from the 43mm limited works very well on the FA 50mm with protecting the front element, it's discrete and no vignetting at all on full frame.
You can easily find it new from 25 to 30 USD or EUR.

Then why not try the 645D first ? They come around 1.000 -1200 € in pro stores in France at least. The CCD sensor can have some advantages over the CMOS, depending on the photography you're planning for the 645 system. This way you can keep the K1 FF system and enjoy a cheaper 645D with two second hand lenses. The setup may cost you under 2.000€ with the 645 FA120mm macro included.

Short answer : Yes.
Long answer : Yes, if you have the €€€ for the lenses. The 25mm, 35mm, 45-85mm and 90mm & 120mm (this last one is cheap) are above anything made for FF or APSC.
The only drawback with the Z is the absence of Tilt-Shift for some rare architectural stuff.
Otherwise, no complaints. Have 2, one + 220.000 clicks and the other +100.000. (harsh weather outdoor shootings included) . No mechanical or electrical faults, no software or hardware errors. Never ever.
Go for it.

owned it for a couple of months so i could compare it with the cheap sony fe 28mm f2.
the sony is better in all aspects.
there's nothing crazy about the lens today, maybe at that time used on old non af dslr it was great. I paid 100€ for it, i wouldn't pay more, i sold it back for the same price.
my advice, wait for a better priced one..

645Z's sensor -> 14bit. just like Fuji's GFX50.

(Hasselblad claims on some recent models sensor : 16bit. but.. the 2+ bits of data don't seem hardware related).
So, i understand that for some applications a photographer wishes 16bit TIFFS instead of 8bit ones when shooting with a 14bit depth sensor, and would be afraid of banding issues in color tones.
But also, actually, most printing is done taking 8bit data.

So, what seems to me more important it's the color gamut size.
Good gamut & 8bit work perfectly fine for 99% of the cases, unless of course some rare very rare cases when dealing with special, really special & complex color tones or if you need to make some huge tonal adjustments.
