Handheld, while in a bobbing boat! HAHA. I'm pretty impressed with the K3/150-450 combo results...

I was hoping to capture some early morning eaglet action... but I think i'm a few days early. I observed zero nest activity today, but was lucky enough to get both parents on their favorite perch branch located in a 'hole' I can shoot threw that gets perfect golden sunrise light. First shot, 150-450 with TC, second shot (later in the morning) without TC @ 450. All with K3

I made it back to the nest this weekend, and, had my friend 'early morning sun' come along with me. What a huge difference...

I have been putting more of my recent pics in the 150-450 thread, but seeing as this thread gets WAY more traffic, and it is the 300+ club... I'll post in both. I went back to the eagles' nest this weekend, and finally had better light to shoot with. It's amazing what a little morning sun can do for the photos!

Not the best lighting conditions, although I do like how you can see some of the rain drops falling. I'm hoping to go back to nest site with some morning light. Thank you 'Lightroom shadow slider' for helping to bring back some details!

Thank you!
A few things. First, it was a very light breeze. Doesn't take too much to move my 28lb boat, or that feather. Second, it ended up in a section of water that was a very narrow channel, so there really wasn't much ripple on the water, and the breeze would come and go. Third, that section of the water was reflecting all sky, no dark backgrounds, so no real detail was showing in the water. Lastly, I did apply a light 'blur' brush to some of that area in PP to increase how soft it already was, and help draw attention to the feather. But the water itself was already very soft.
Thank you again for your kind comments!

Something a little different today... while getting some pictures of whatever might come may way in the swamp this morning (I got a few so-so BIF pics), I managed this one of a floating feather. This was from my little Poke boat, while the feather, and me in the boat, were floating along the same breeze. Hand-held. K3 + 150-450. Shot at 360mm (I believe)

Another moon photo... I looked up at the sky last night and noticed a bright orange ring or halo around the almost full moon through the thickening clouds. (massive blizzard hitting here today). I was able to salvage an image of it. First, I took an exposure for the clouds, and the colors around them @150mm. Next, I attached the 1.4TC, and took a picture of the properly exposed moon @450, or technically 630mm with the TC attached. Processed each layer separately and join the two for one final image. Then, I did a Google search to figure out what I was looking at. Apparently that orange glow is the moon light, which is reflecting off the sun, reflecting back on to ice crystals in the atmosphere. SCIENCE!!

I believe (hope!) I've achieved a better resulting background/sky, as well as pulled a little more details out of the moon, in this version. (I promise, final upload of my first 150-450 picture! Little kid, new toy. GUILTY!)

The two biggest pieces of advice I can give...
1. Lessen your weight at all costs
2. Purchase a Peak Design Capture Pro Clip with Pro Plate. It will be the best hiking/photography piece of gear you ever purchase.
Weight is everything when hiking for me. I've brought an extra lens more often than I care to admit, and ended taking 90% (or more) of my images with only one lens. I bring a 16-35mm. I've brought along the 10-20 and I just don't end up using it anymore. Just not as versatile. And, it weighs too much for the few images I might take. And I've found zero opportunities or reasons for anything beyond 50mm.
By having my camera mounted to the clip, which is mounted to my backpack strap, I can take so many more photos than I would if I were stopping and digging it out of my backpack every time I think I see something worth capturing.
Lastly, leave the tripod at home. Your backpack, a log, a rock, or a combination of all of the above are your tripod. Again, save the weight and awkwardness of bringing it along. I brought it once, and have never regretted it since leaving it at home.
I travel light, I keep my camera close, and I enjoy the light-weight hiking, and take a lot more photos.
ENJOY!!

Here's my morning setting moon pic from Saturday. I'm happy with the moon, but I'm still having some issues with how the sky is processing. I have a lot to learn with the lens, but that's the part I'm looking forward to! Happy shooting everyone.

I am also in Massachusetts, insane 50 degree temperature swing the last two days. However, my new toy showed up two days ago in the form of the D FA 150-450. Hoping to get out this weekend and play even though the temps are going back down again!!

Took a few wood duck photos today. There were many to choose from, but this one was my favorite. It was the clearest, and the reflection came out great. K3+DA*300
