On the question: " How do you shoot low light?" I would respond with: standing next to my K20D, which is on the tripod, having my wireless/cable trigger in my left/right hand. Thinking why is my bag so heavy! :D
Actually I tend to stay in M mode, sometimes with the help of the Green Button, sometimes just by experimentation (if the time allows it).
I shoot 99.99% in RAW, WB if it`s not on Shade than it`s on Flash. I tend to forget that I have set a week/2/3 ago flash for WB. :D
I like to keep ISO as low as it can possibly stay, rarely jump over 800/1600 (100/200 if I have flash with me and is allowed to be used), but again I am no commercial shooter, no worry if thing don't come out exactly I wanted to/needed to. |

I had as well some troubles. 3 times in 2009. The average time for each servicing was about 1 month. Lucky I had a backup body for the 3 months period.

I was playing with our Christmas tree the another day. Unfortunately I had little space to work with so it was taken at 70mm instead of the 135 that I wished. I think it came out pretty well.
What do you think?

As far as I remember I bought some stuff from them (V2s Wireless Remote Control for Pentax K10D/K100D/K200D, some extension tubes, some right angle view finder etc, all in 1 big order for about 80-90 US$. ), this year. They sent what they advertised.
I must tell you I am in no relations with them, just a one time buyer, if this matters at all.
I received the goods in, like a week, here in the Czech Republic.
I was satisfied with their services.
Though if you can get the same/very similar price locally then go for the local shop/deal.
Hope it helps.
Have a great New Year!

I`m as well in the empty seat category!
I`m away from family working in foreign country some 700km away.
Sad but true, many many, perhaps too many empty seats!

@Rae2 there is a way to disable the autopower off feature if you really want. I did that for my own 540fgz and I`m happy i did that.
Anyway I have, just in case, additional 12 spare batteries with me almost all the time.
It`s in the manual if you want to stop the auto power off, somethoing like press the "Light" button for 2 seconds, then select some option to "2".
If I`d have the manual with me I could be exact, but I have it at home.
Anyway, it`s very easy and you finished with the 3 minutes shutdown feature.
EDIT: http://www.pentaximaging.com/files/manual/Web_AF540FGZ_Eng.pdf
Page 17, exact combination of buttons / selections for the power off setting.
@jboyde
As for the main question, I opted for the cheapo version of PockeWizards (the ebay ones also called as PowertyWizards :-D ) and quite happy with them.
Depending on what your budget is and your requirements are. I actually like staying full manual for consistency reason.

Hi,
I just had my camera changed. I had exactly same problem. Every few shots, in cold weather (-6 to -4 degrees C).
The camera was sent also to the Pentax main service center in Hamburg/Germany, but what they did helped very little. (including upgrade to 1.03 and image sensor recalibration)
After the 3rd trip to service they agreed to refund me, and I`ve got a new k20d this week.
As I mentioned before, it was very bad in cold weather, but I`ve read posts that were less temperature related.
It could be just because of a component from the A/D conversion unit, that malfunction because of probably: moisture, cold, electrical interference, etc...
Send it asap to service, that is my opinion about it.

In any case, you can try to use the camera as card reader / mass storage device. See if you have any read/write errors during the copy.
If you see any error, it means that maybe you should consider a new card.
Your camera is a very good SD and SDHC reader (depends also of the version of the USB interface of your laptop, version 2 should be best since 1.1 is slow).
Before doing anything else, try to copy those files using your camera plugged in your laptop.
Some basics about USB speed, in case you need: USB 2.0, Hi Speed USB FAQ
And some about K10/20D USB speed:
" ... Like most D-SLRs, the K10D supports the USB 2.0 High Speed standard. ..." DCRP Review: Pentax K10D
Good luck.

Similar problem here, I had write issues on SDHC Kingston 4G (many problems on forums from this producer).
Tried to format, reformat, create different file-system (ext 3, ext 2 under linux) on it, having read/write issues in all types, ... then played with other format software under windows, having still problems (including when using the camera as transfer device to laptop).
My solution: I trashed it after a week. I have new (different make) 8G SDHC and no problem.
Always have with you backup SD(s) and check from time to time, if all files are correctly written at least on the camera if you do not have a laptop with you ( or any other "in the field" backup device).

I`ve had exactly the same type of issue and fixed it with a common "air" blower. I understood that spray blowers are not recommended.
