Weekly Challenge #389 — “A Different Approach”

Bush Walk is my "official" titling but it should really be named Embarrassing!

Shooting pics with my K1 on a car/photo rally. I was holding the camera in front of me and accidentally fired off the shutter.

Took a nicely balanced picture in dark bush with an obviously longer shutter speed K1. 28-105mm lens. 1/8s . f6.3. ISO 200. fl 58mm. Anti Shake didn't cope too well!

Next job is to replicate it on another topic.

My K1 flashes aperture, speed and ISO settings - any K1 users confirm please?

To have a fairly large chunk of LCD real estate flashing once a second throughout say, a 4 hour night shoot, is distracting and ultimately (for me) irritating. My Sony A6000 advises exposure out of range too, but much more discretely by flashing the EV limits in red. Ricoh should a) update their manual to advise what the flashing is about and b) mute it down - say change the color of the relevant settings - or flash the display a few times and then stop.

The K1 is designed for night shooting so operating in dark conditions is "normal" and it is being used normally.

I was only "worried" that the camera was faulty - which seemed to be confirmed by the response from Ricoh - but the good folks here in the forum advised otherwise - awesome "service" - BTW - I'm keeping the K1 !

Ciao - PJ

Thanks again Steve - your reply implies that when correct exposure is achieved the blinking will stop? When the ambient light levels are outside the metering linearity the blinking on my K1 is continuous - I have max'd out the iso, aperture and speed settings to grossly overexpose the picture and my K1 blinked throughout (with the exposure meter showing grossly overexposed too).

My solution is to turn off the LCD display and use the viewfinder and top annuciators only - my night photography is always manually set and a fair degree of T & E!

Thanks - Paul

Thank you so much ... your replies have saved me the bother of sending my K1 in for servicing (which would have achieved little). This should have been explained to me by Ricoh at the time of my formal inquiry to them.

This is a very heavy handed annunciation method (flashing the three exposure settings) on a camera that has so many excellent low light features. For all night or low light photography, to have all three displays flashing continuously for an issue there is no control over (exposure meter operating in its non-linear mode) is unnecessary - a simple menu setting to disable or mute this would be useful.

Thank you again ..

Does my K1 have a fault or is this "normal" behavior - would some kind K1 user try this for me...

1) turn off the camera, remove lens, and replace it with the body cap
2) turn on the camera and set to any setting that engages the exposure meter - I think Bulb is the only exception - all other modes use the EM
3) place finger or thumb over the optical viewfinder port at the rear

Does the LCD flash the aperture, speed and ISO settings and does this stop when removing your thumb or the body cap?

(this behavior happens with a lens fitted and blocked off by lens cap or hand too).

My K1 does this - it was first noticed after upgrading to 1.27 and using the camera for night photography (where both lens and optical viewfinder ports have low ambient light).

Ricoh have suggested I return the camera to them for "checking" - but its the height of the camera season here and the camera performs normally otherwise.

Many thanks ... PJ

Would there by any demand for this WIFI product for the K1?

Some additional WIFI software would help - my wife's Sony A6000 has DLNA WIFI capability which allows the camera to connect into the house network and display camera images on the 4K 55" house TV. This is great for quick previews or displaying recently taken photos to the family etc etc. The Sony WIFI also so provides a quick method of xfering to iphone/Samsung... phones to quickly text an image.

Otherwise my K1's WIFI is old fashioned and rather pointless - a marketers byline ....

K1 V1.30 shows Out Of Range in low ambient

This morning, me and my K1 went down to the harbour to photograph the sunrise. I arrived well before sunrise – in the dark with harbour lights and a high moon.

With the K1 set to manual, the viewfinder blinked the speed/aperture/ISO settings – “out of range” ? (oor) … and in the live view window, the oor settings blinked red. The internal exposure meter worked as normal and the exposures and pictures were OK too.

I reset the camera to its factory settings, changed the lens – Ptx 100mm ws, Ptx 18-105 zoom, Ptx 300mm F* - cycled the battery – still blinking.

I continued shooting and as the sky began to lighten, the blinking stopped.

Back home, I placed the camera under the bedclothes (hellish dark there!) and the “out of range” blinking returned – even with the the exposure meter reading +5. A slight increase in ambient light and the blinking stopped.

I have tried other settings M P Tav …. same problem.

With the camera out in normal room light the oor blinking is not evident – even when placing my hand over the lens – it seems as if there is some ambient light sensing happening – that is, the K1 senses a dark ambient and sets the oor warning on.

This is my first “dark” shoot using V1.30 firmware – I have not seen this behavior before.

Thanks for any help or comments …

I remain disappointed with the K1's WiFi implementation - it spoils an otherwise superb camera and appears to be a rushed and incomplete afterthought.

I have used Sony's A6000 for the last year or so and their Wifi and its inter-connectivity is a breeze. The A6000 will connect and transfer to and from iPhones, PC, Macs - and display images on a domestic TV running DLNA.

Why did Pentax ignore the most prolific OS (Windows - love it or hate it) in the world? - yes Sony force one to use their domestic Play Memories but this is a freeby unlike Adobe's LightRoom and Pentax's tethering. The other way of course is to run an Android emulator on my PC and then Ricoh's sink [sic] program.

One feature my wife and I enjoy - she has a Cybershot - is to log into the local WiFi router and play our day's pictures on any TV in the house via the network and DLNA - great over a wine or two! They look superb on a 55" HDTV and are a great way to review and critique pictures without being tethered and using Windows etc.

I'm hoping Pentax will fit these features into the K1 in a firmware upgrade.

No - I will not give my K1 back - ever!
