I'm actually going to study this matter on next semester starting this next monday :D
Your answer is highly welcome then! I didn't know Sony was so "slow" in acquiring 300nm fab technology... Hence, my post which circle around how "ancient" this technology really is...
Process technology node was put into discussion only to highlit that older node for sure are cheaper than newer one :)
BTW, understand your point now! :)

It's hard to find the bond between K1 and 300 wafer size transition as this began "in earnest in 2000" (citing wikipedia)... So it's been more than a decade that 300mm are out of the market... We can say that 300 mm wafer are becoming cheaper and cheaper each year... But they are also improving in characteristics and transistor dimensions (density).... From 180-130nm process node introduced in 1999-2001, to this 14/16nm as current state of the art process node technology...
Plus, I think Pentax is not the only one who choose the best Tech/money for users :D

Nor I'm willing to pay 1499€ for a body (X-T2*) + a lot more for a set of overpriced lenses (despite being very compact and build wonderfully)
Hence I'm here interested in Pentax's APS-C line :D
*even if I loved it, for its characteristics, Ergonomics and style

Isn't it like some people around here?
"if Pentax doesn't provide it, we're all good with it... Go somewhere else!
"Pentax isn't on par in AF tracking with other brands? Who need it?"
Don't see so much differences
Fuji's users got a lot to argue with subpar video quality of "their" product in past times... As those from Pentax... Lot of whining to other people who wanted to buy their products, but they haven't yet met their expectations... The only difference I see is that Fuji try to solve some of them with the new X-T2... Here, we (some of us) are still waiting for a new model with those up-to-date functions...

Definitely not a bargain price...

Don't know guys... Maybe this is not the best discussion to post my thoughts... But... DSLR vs Mirrorless... Doesn't interest me so much...
I'm here just to learn more about Pentax system... And from the outside, it doesn't shine so much... Let me explain before throwing rocks at me!
I mean... Here a lot of people hope that a new batch of new full frame lenses will be released (none of this so far at Photokina, let's wait till the end) but I find having a such long list of APS-C lenses for K-mount a great plus... Don't want to pay more, don't want to spend more, don't want to carry more... Love APS-C. That wish is nonetheless reasonable, as K-1 compatible lenses with good resolution and updated characteristics are not so much! But even these APS-C lenses need a good upgrade, with update focus system and characteristcs... so both fanbases of Pentax system are here asking for new products!
So far, none of this happened at Photokina... No new body, no new full frame lenses, no new APS-C lenses... We had that K-70 and that 55-300 PLM some weeks ago... Great combo but again Pentax seems not to care to some people asked (video related stuff) and again no updated better optics...
Then we have a look at what Fujifilm is building with its mirrorless system (don't want a DSLR vs mirrorless battle here, just comparing systems)... and we have something similar to Pentax... Great selection of APS-C lenses, great body... But at the Photokina they are keeping innovating with new products and a good selection of lenses to start battling in the medium format arena... And we have also the new X-T2 by which Fujifilm answered whinings from publics improving so much autofocus and video characteristics... Moreover, we will have a new camera that instant print square picture like those Polaroids... Not interested, but...
Comparing these two players... One that is "a bit" overpriced (ok, that 17-50 f/2.8 by Pentax is not so different) but keep upgrading systems and Pentax, which so far (compared) lags behind...
Why, I ask, should I start my journey with Pentax? I have no lenses, no body... And I have some cash... But how can I trust a brand with a niche market like fujifilm who seems to be too much slow in answering to competition? To me Pentax is not showing sign of keeping pace with the innovation of others brand...
P.S.: Remember, I'm not here to waste my time bashing Pentax... I'm here because I'm a potential buyer... But as a potential buyer, I try to find gaps in systems... Better find those now, than before buying something...

Just saying... After Fuji's series of good mirrorless models, they now announced a come back in medium format arena... With a good selection of lenses...
Agree with you, but Pentax should really starts to presenting some new models soon while keeping upgrading faster than it use to be is selection of APS-C lenses... Otherwise only Fuji will take advantages of this condition and their condition will just get worse and worse....

I don't see it that way…
Look at Cristopher Frost review…
Far less review.… but take into account that he manage his channel alone, he speaks only about Canon and Canon compatible lenses (ok, pretty much every lenses)… doesn't review new body as he review only what he bought for himself… and rent/buy/trade each lens all alone… Considering that, and considering his audiences' numbers… serious reviews pays for themself

Ah I see... I thought/hope there was space for kind of low (if we can call that "low"), medium and high-end APS-C lines in Pentax with K-70, K-5 and K-3... Of course not with a 16 MPixel sensor in one of these lines as market seems to level to 20/24 MPixel sensors nowadays.... But I recognize it, probably it just me trying to find something which I don't like in Pentax :D

In the end, I agree with both of you...
If nothing interesting will be presented at Photokina, I'm quite sure I'll buy a K-3 II + 16-85... Seems a kit with this lens exists too at a marvellous price of 1175€ (web shop in Rome (where I live)), which I find to be a really good price for this combo... Maybe soon after I'll buy that 55-300 PLM... They are both new lenses so it will be difficult they will be upgraded in the near future and that extra 2mm in the short end may allow or may not allow me to slightly postpone the acquisition of a wider lenses... We'll see...
Actually, I hope the K-3 II will be upgraded at Photokina... Judging from test made by dpreview, at high ISO, it gets crushed a lot by the new K-70! Pentax K-70 added to studio test scene
An upgrade I think, is very needed... Don't know if they'll upgrade also the K-5 II... But they are not too different in dimensions... Even if, because of that K-70, there is space for a K-5 III with focus and metering capabilities of a K-3 II and a K-3 III with focus and metering capabilities of a K-1 or even better... Both with upgraded sensors and high ISO performances... We'll see also here :)
One thing is definitevely sure... In a couple of months I'll need some help with postproducing software

Mine is based on Arduino Mega and a Adafruit 2.8" TFT screen... I should add compatibility with Stellarium or something similar... Even if, with this software, I have to carry a laptop and things became impraticable... But maybe other way of doing this exists and further investigation is needed :D
BTW, Astrotracer for me would come handy just to take photos with longer exposure and without tails... Then, I would like to left composition/targetting to me...
But anyway, it will be difficult I'll shot pictures valuable in a contest... So, nothing necessary and needed, but something nice to have for me :)
Uhm, I start to understand the usefulness of primes... I love Sigma 18-35 and 50-100 because, at the end, they'll cost me a lot less than a similar set of primes, having also enough picture quality to satisfy me... But in the end, you made me think it will hard I'll carry them with me while travelling... Now, that 18-135 is the least interesting for me compared to a 16-85 or that 17-70... But by listening to your point, it will be also what I truly need... This and a wide angle lens, and I may able to cover all focal lenght I need to shot pictures I like to shoot... Saying this, because:
experience (yours and experencies of all of you that take time to answer me) speaks to itself and that's probably the best way of doing witthout kill my wallet
With my HC-x900 I hardly ever use zoom, because images get darker and it's harder to have firm sequences with a lot of zoom.... So I don't really know what really mean those number linked to those focal lenght...
I'll follow your advice then and buy just a 16-85 or a 18-135 (in bundle, cheaper, maybe better also for this reason) with a K-3 II... Then will see :D
Thanks to you all! If you have more advice to give me, they will be welcome for sure ^_^
Now, with a better understanding of the matter, let's just wait for Photokina and hope Pentax will release one or two more lenses (and a crop body too)

there is for sure a lot to answer :D
Thank you all for your advices!
I am an astro photography fan, even if it's hard I'll shoot a lot of those kind of photos (noise pollution all around me)... But anyway... I have a motorized slider + head and a tripod (which I build just for the sake of learn in this area (electronics, programming, soldering and astrophotography)) to use in these occasions so, even if they are not killer features, they are highly welcome ^_^
Also, no plan to print anything for this moment... Just store it in some HDDs (redundancy) :)
Thank you for giving these examples (Flickr too). Highly appreciated :)
Originally my plan was to buy a Canon 70D + Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 + Canon 55-300... Then those Sigma came out (18-35&50-100) and I felt in love instantly... K-3 was still too much pricey for my need and K-5 IIs not up to my need (back in the days when I was seeking also for a second camera for videos)... Then K-70 came out, and my interest in Pentax rise again. Too bad for still that SAFOX 11 and those 77 segments for expositions :/
But now that you're reminding me, probably it's a better choice, so I can learn what I need and begin to understand my shooting preferences...
It may be my best choice but unfortunatelly for price and fear of thieft, I tend to don't look to FF... Too much big as you said :)
I'm a tall and fairly fit guy, but still, I think I won't enjoy any of my travel if I bring with me those big body for fearing on being to much noticed... K-70 is more in my style (but not up to my standard in autofocusing and exposure metering as you said)... Probably I may also have to reconsider to bring a 18-35 with me while traveling... Now looking seriously also to Pentax 16-85 and/or Sigma 17-50... Thanks :)
Two days ago this review came out...
Based on your statement, this review and what I think I will be my subjects and styling, I'm now fairly sure I'll buy a Sigma 8-16 :)
Plus, this Pentax/Tokina 10-17 doesn't seems to stand good against Sigma 8-16 :/ You Tube |
src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/FyJEHZy6l5E?controls=1" allowfullscreen> |
If I'll ever want to shoot with a fish-eye... Maybe I'll look to Samyang's 8mm/12mm... This 10-17mm doesn't very seem to be up to what I seek in a lens (sharpness and color fringing mainly) :)
Or maybe it was just a bad copy reviewed by Christopher? It's not irony, I'm asking seriously here :)
I have already started to keep an eye open :D
Hope I'll find something interesting after Photokina in Europe region ^_^

I second the advice of a very wide angle lens...
But, mostly, as I'm not that expert in that area (camera equipment)... My advice is to visit Coppedè district, Monte distict, Capuchin crypt (higlhy recommended as not famous - here a super wide lens is strongly needed), Basilica of San Clemente al Laterano, Vittoriano Terrace (great view here), Saint Peter in chains (make sure to come from Via Cavour, throw "ascent of borgia" stairs) (to the side, engineering faculty where I study... You may want to visit very fast if you have time - ... but in reality, a lot of tourists come there just to go to the bathroom  )
and so on...

I don't like the fisheye effect very much... If I will buy this lens, I suppose I will use it just for a few shots... I prefer linear one, as I plan to use these kind of lenses also for night timelapses...
Is it possible to defishing shots? Is it a fast procedure? If so, may I ask you to give me a before/after of one of your shot of your chioice below 14mm? @normhead: wow! Thank you for taking so much time answering me. So appreciated! Seems anyway that some explanations are needed. Listening to "S health" app and my smartphone, I often walk more than 15 Km each day and being still a student, I often carry with me a 3-4 Kg bag (that Lowepro Flipside 10L) with books, copybooks and a 2-in-1 (ASUS T100HA)... 140g more won't be for now a problem. What I intended with weight was that I hope to find a small set of jack of all trades lenses that I can bring with me and shot anything I want, anywhere I am. This is the reason I love these 18-35 & 50-100. They are compact, and they cover all focal lenght covered by good primes... Plus, it seems they have great charactestics too...
Anyway, as swanlefitte said too, that Pentax 16-85 is very interesting... And because my budget won't cover both,I will probably considered it in favor of a Sigma 18-35... I would love to have shallow DoF and large apertures... But, at this point, it's effectively not that useful... Maybe I'll buy a prime when I'll know what is the focal lenght I prefer to shot with... Thank you ^_^
Don't know, being a newbie in photography, I think I will feel pretty limited by buying a prime... But that is just me... Maybe a little more thinking is needed in this area :D
About that 55-300, is there anybody here which has already bought the new version of this lens? Is that faster compared with the older one, which I prefer for its wider aperture?
EDIT: I checked again for Pentax K-3 II… And 719€ was for the K-3… damn :D

Hi guys,
a very few of you may know me. For the others, I'm a student who, for 4 years, shots mainly videos with a camcorder. Then I saw timelapses, I wanted to make my own and I developed my own interpretation of a motorized slider + head (pan/tilt) controlled with Arduino. I've already read Langford's Advanced Photography and saw a lot of videos. So I may know things, but I don't have direct experiences at all with photography and camera gear. For this, I seek your help
I made up my mind and, short after the next Photokina I plan to buy this stuff:- -Pentax K-3 II
- -Sigma 8-16
- -Sigma 18-35
- -Pentax 55-300 (newer or older version?)
for these reasons:- 719€ on amazon.de, K-70 at 699€... so far, it seems a better choice for autofocus and astrotracer - might be worse for autofocus...this is also my price ceiling unfortunatelly, so probably I can't afford a K-3 III soon.
I am losing in low light abilities compared to K-70? - resolution and linear wide lens. Pentax 10-17 is fisheye right? What I am honestly losing if I will "defished" all my future shot made with a Pentax 10-17? Are there some reasons to prefer the Pentax interpretation?
- I love the idea behind this lens. Being a collection of primes in a small, versatile pocket. For the same reason, I love the 50-100. Too bad it's still unavailble for Pentax. Hope it will be soon*
- just a "inexpensive" (400€... not too much), telephoto zoom. Any alternatives?
*I'll buy Pentax, that's for sure because of its SR, Pixelshift, Astrotracer and general better features compared to same price competitors' models. Hope Pentax or Sigma will realease a lens with same carachteristic. Otherwise, I'll end buying two prime max.
I am right in what I'm doing? Are there better options in a same price range? What are the main problems of this lenses? I already know about Sigma 18-35 AF problem. Probably I'll buy the Sigma 8-16 in a second time just to sweeten a bang on my wallet :D
Some informations on subject I plan to shot: family, travel, timelapses. Don't know if in future, I'll expand my interest in shooting. I already have a camcorder so, even if I dreamed of having a second camera for videos, this is not an area of my interest. I'm a student, so "less I spend, more is better" but I'm also perfectionist. So if there's a solution that allow me to spend a little bit more, obtaining a lot more, tell me. I might considered it :)
As I plan to shot travel photo of architecture, weight can be a problem (that is the reason I love Sigma 18-35 and 50-100). I already have a Lowepro Flipside 10L AW which I plan to use and I don't want to exceed space needed allowed by this bag. For this reasons, is a 18-135 useful? Which do you suggest me to buy? Also, I'll never be interested in full frames. Too much big and that 1,5x in range can be interesting (same range, cheaper lenses)
Thank you in advance :)
P.S.: bonus question: I loved Christopher Frost's videos. Is there something similar for Pentax lenses? I saw LeeHaze1's videos... But they are not on par in quality and characteristics reviewed...

It's funny here…
We're in a thread speaking about a new camera, and a review just came out saying "our" (at least for a part of us) expectations area little bit crushed because Pentax autofocus in video is unusable for that as it's still hauting for focus as a simple contrast based system, being nowhere near what Canon can offers since its 70D…
This came out but "you're not allowed" to talk about it and express your disappointment because it seems some here take it personal as those words are directed to them and not to Pentax… I understand we're in a forum called PentaxForums and there is for sure some "fanboysm" here and there but still... I find somehow funny what you can say here for someone is just good words about Pentax… Complaints are not allowed by someone. Are you here because you're interested in Pentax (you took some time to register here) but Pentax again crush your hope in video mode even if some improvements took place (KAF4, AF speed in LV)? Don't complain here (so where should I?) and go away buying other brand…here just good opinion <3
:D
