Before getting the DFA 24-70, I was using the FA 43 on the K-1 quite a lot. I love the rendering, although most of the time I use the zoom for more flexibility. Some examples below (you can click the images for full resolution version on Flickr).
As for the large files, I think you need a decent computer. At the moment I'm using an i7 processor @ 4Ghz, 16 GB RAM memory and a SSD for operating system and Lightroom, pictures being stored on a regular hard drive. I am quite happy with this setup regarding the processing speed. Not that I have found. I agree the ultra thin lines are difficult to see in the dark. I never had such problems on prior models.
But momentarily press the AF Mode button on the side of the camera and the entire grid will light up. :cool:
For the OP;
I would install Firmware before anything else.
Then customize the controls. But I have been used to specific customizations over the past 10+ years. So you may be happy with the defaults.
