Anyone got any experience with the no-name 60mm 2:1 manual focus off ebay?

Hi there,

I'm wanting to explore the world of macro photography without spending heaps, and in my research, I came across this: 60mm f/2.8 2:1 Super Macro Manual Focus lens for Pentax PK DSLR K200 KR KX K7 KM | eBay

It seems to be a knock-off of the Venus/Laowa. I've got two questions for anyone who has used it:
- what is it like as a lens? is the image quality like?
- I've read for the venus that you can't get 2:1 on an APS-C (like my K3ii). Is this true? If so, what is the biggest magnification you can get on this?

thanks in advance

couldn't agree more...but my point was that saying that the k-3 is a great sports camera (and it is!) when you are shooting blokes standing at the crease is a bit cheeky.

the third shot is the best of the bunch

and caliscouser, i agree that the k-3 can handle sports just fine, but cricket is a bit of a cheat, as for most shots the focusing distance isn't changing as the bowler and batsmen are playing at the crease...notice how there are no action fielding pics? :)

I ummed and ahhed as I didn't get a shot in every day in August, and September is looking even more busy, but then I did more shooting than if I wasn't involved, so I'll go around for another whirl.

I know this sort of thing has been posted about before, but I can't resist. I spent 10 days in NYC and DC. And the whole time I played the 'spot the pentax shooter' game. Besides my own k-3ii, I saw a total of 3 pentaxes, out of hundreds of cameras. I don't know whether I was expecting more than this, but it made the game fun and challenging at least.

Now the breakdown: one was a k-s2 (the orange bottom gives it away!) with a tourist family in a museum. The second was the most encouraging: a serious shooter (battery grip, etc...) with a pentax (couldn't tell which one) on ellis island. This was notable because I didn't see a lot of serious shooters during the week. Lots of tourists walking around with rebels and d5xxx series; a few with 5d mk3 users with L lenses who really seemed liked they'd splashed on the camera but not really into photography; may be 5 shooters with good quality equipment with extras (like custom straps, etc). That tells me that pentax might actually have a relatively good standing with serious hobbyists, but isn't known at the lower end of the spectrum where there are lots of sales.

The third pentax was this one in the spy museum in DC. Why haven't I seen this one listed in anyone's signatures? :p

Thanks Todd, that's good to know about the relaxed nature of the group - something I'm probably better off starting with anyway.

I had an old Nikon film slr back in the day, but recently, I've been using an panasonic superzoom, and now wanting to get into taking better photographs, so when it was time to get a new camera, I made the leap. Picked up a K-3ii when it was cheap on amazon, and paired it with the lightly used 18-55 and tamron 70-300, and a new 50 f1.8. That was the limit of the budget! Hopefully will upgrade the lenses in a year or so as I work out what best will suit my shooting.

thanks for the welcome :)

My advice would be twofold: 1) look around here and DPR to see if anyone else is getting the same problem; 2) try to recreate the fault as closely as possible at least 10 times and see what happens - if you can repeat the error then yes, send it back for a replacement.

I should also say, if you are really worried, then there's nothing lost in getting a replacement from Amazon except a few days without the camera. I'm pretty sure you don't even need to pay shipping.

My understanding is that there are no firmware updates for the K-3ii yet.
