DFA 28-105: Hood & Step-down ring 67 to 62mm

Hi,
All in the title : is it possible to keep using the hood on the DFA 28-105 with a step-down ring 67mm to 62mm ?
I never had the case of being able to use the hood with a step-down ring, but who knows !

That woud be great to share my 67mm polarizing filter on both DA* 50-135 and DFA 28-105.

Thanks

I'm aware of the step-down in FPS, but I almost never find myself shooting at max. burst speed, usually "medium speed" burst setting when I need to. So I guess it won't be an issue ;-)

K-1 II just ordered! and a few questions

Hi!
Just ordered the K-1 II kit with 28-105mm, as an upgrade from K-3 II. I thought it would have been a K-3 III !

The main benefits to my use are :
- resolution and dynamic range and pixel shift II for landscapes
- high ISOs and better AF for sports
- FF/crop modes for a simulated TC on FF lenses when max resolution is not needed

- making my primes come alive

Not sure how long will my DA* 50-135 last before upgrading to the D-FA* 70-200... the size/weight/price doesn't appeal much at the moment!

A few questions in mind, from what I know or could read somewhere.
Does the APS-C crops keeps benefit of FF like :
1) Depth of field alteration (F2.8 on FF is said to look like F2 on APS-C. But is this only because if the cropped part added in frame ?)
2) Better dynamic range(is this only due to the bigger pixel size, that would remain the same in crop mode ?)

3) Better high ISOs (same) ?

Can't wait!

HD 16-85 vs 55-300 PLM, DA* 50-135, M28/2 & M50/1.4 : IQ/Sharpness

Yes, thank you.

Abouth the PLM, I've been using the 60-250 quite a lot and was also stocked by the IQ of the 55-300 compared to the DA*.
The focus speed is indeed impressive with the PLM. BUT ! The AF.C tracking is more precise with the SDM. Being a rafting (river sports) shooter on the summer and producing hundreds of shot of this type daily, I can tell you I was not worried about loosing the focus with the DA* (rafts are relatively slow moving), while with the 55-300 I'd miss shots with the focus slightly off (say, 20% of the shots).

Many options for an indoor sports lens !

My opinion, in preference order :
1) DA* 50-135 f/2.8 : you can't go wrong ! AF is not the best of course... but if you value handling/compactness and price over absolute best AF and IQ, this is it. A wonderful lens anyway.
2) D FA* 70-200 f/2.8 : this is the beast, three times bigger & three times the price of the previous option, yet you get optimum IQ and AF performance. Not sure how it pairs with the KP though, handling might not be that good.

3) FA 77 limited f/1.8 : an amazing lens, if it magnifies sufficiently for your use. Not sure if the screwdrive AF tracking is up to the SDM AF tracking on the 50-135 though. Maybe have a look at the D FA 100 f/2.8 and the DA 70 f2.4 limited also.

4) DA* 200 f/2.8 : if you think option #1 doesn't give you the reach.
5) HD DA 55-300 f/4.5-6.3 PLM : a wonderful lens for the price, fast AF yet tracking does not top SDM lenses. I think the slow aperture might not suit your use case.

Anyway, while Pentax does not provide top of the game AF systems, you get used to it and find solutions to make it work for you (I'm an outdoor sports photographer and have used DA* 60-250, DA* 50-135 and HD 55-300 PLM for that purpose).

Thank you for your answers.

I do always get the same kind of results while manually focusing with LV magnification : far from sharp.
So I guess this is just a bad copy...

---------- Post added 08-28-18 at 08:55 AM ----------

On the full image, the pine is not more in focus. I was using AF for this shot, but I've been since doing more shots using LV magnification, and even though highlighted as "in focus" in LV, the shots are every time quite as unsharp.

Hi everyone,

After having used extensively the 55-300 PLM this summer and being blown away by its image quality for the price, I acquired the acclaimed HD 16-85 to build a 2 zooms light kit.
I was having quite high expectations because of reviews that all seem to point out the great IQ/sharpness. I've lasted a few weeks to have some proper testing and.. I just realize that my copy of 16-85 isn't quite sharp.
Today I shot some comparison tests with my DA* 50-135, PLM 55-300, M 50/1.4 and M 28/2, mostly at infinity focus / landscape-ish.

My 55-300 is not quite differentiable in terms of sharpness from my DA* or my M 50.
My 16-85 is worse than DA*, M28, M50 or PLM55-300.

Here are a few comparison pictures 100%crop, taken with K-3 II @ISO 250, 1/320, F8 (variations in exposure due to some ISO200 pictures).
JPEG L*** straight out of camera, "natural" processing with all values set to 0.

16-85 @28mm :

M 28/2 :

16-85 @48mm:

M50/1.4 :

55-300 @ 55mm:

DA* 50-135 @50mm:

16-85 @85mm:

50-135 @85mm:

55-300@78mm:

Am I expecting too much ?

If so, is my copy of 55-300 such a good copy that it's easily better than my 16-85 ? Or is it supposed to be this way ?

Nice pic comparison. Do you think that without the TC @300mm IQ would be on par ? Maybe advatage to the DA* ?

It's a wonderful lens provided you have enough light - its small aperture being the counterpart of everything else it has !
Excellent IQ/versatility for the price tag.

The 77 is absolutely gorgeous. Rendering is what is said to be, quite special. I've never used other FA's ltd to compare.

DA 15 ltd has a great rendering, but there's a real limitation when it comes to corners/border sharpness which is quite poor.

As many it seems, the 31 limited.
I've spent a long time (and still) deciding which normal prime I'd want. I've briefly had the DA 35 2.4. Having used the 77 limited I just couldn't stop thinking of getting the 31 limited, but never badly enough to justify the high price tag. At the moment I'm sticking with an M 28/2 which I found in excellent condition...

Ultra wide angle single focus lens is announced on the official roadmap for 2019 or later... Not clear if that's DA or DFA though, but after DFA 50, 85 and (supposedly) 35, it might well be a DFA 21 or so.

Seems great!
What about 50-135 + DA 1.4 TC on a K-3 or K-3 II, anyone?
I'm actually liking the idea of that compact lightweight quality "70-200 f4", and do own a K-3 II.
50-135 is just gorgeous anyway.
How's the AF affected by the TC?

DA 15mm + 21mm or Ricoh GR II

I'd take the GRII only. Convenience.
This thing is so small and lightweight, yet it produces wonderful images and is really nice to handle once getting used to it. Super customizable to fill your needs/usage.
With the crop modes you almost have a 18mm+ 21mm (28mm + 35mm equiv). You'd loose the ultra wide 15mm. But even in crop 35mm, quality wise, I wouldn't miss the 21ltd.

DA* 60-250 F4 : autofocus failure, twice.

Hello,

Reviving this thread as I now know more.
After 2 copies sent back under warranty, I had my third copy and... boom, happened again recently. Autofocus stuck.
Which lead to asking myself what the hell am I doing wrong : it always happened while zooming back (say from ~200mm to ~80mm) somehow quickly, and autofocusing at the same time threw AF-AEL button. Nothing dramatic on this point...

Then I saw the light (yes, it took time :/), that it might me originating from my K3II, or the from connection between the DSLR and the telezoom.
So I switched AF->M on the DSLR and manual focus was indeed working without a flaw. I forgot now if this had been the case with my former copies... but I feel really stupid not having tried that if this was the case !
Switch again M->AF and was working again.
Happened a couple of times again since, and I just switched AF->M, manually turn the focus ring, and M->AF : it solved it.

I tried to have a look on the connection since, cleaned it, nothing seems wrong with it, and after a few days of extensive use I didn't have the problem again.

So in the end, it just seems to be a gentle connecting problem / maybe the K3II AF/M switch.
I've never had this happen with any other lens than my 60-250 tho. It's also the one I use extensively...

I hope this experience can bring light to someone having this problem !

Nope but I will try (just been reading on the subject). It's still on guarantee for a while.

Thank you all for answers.
I think I'll have it checked by Pentax. Still within the specs indeed, but not by much and that's why I'm concerned.
