What is wrong with you guys?
I tried very hard to come up with a reasoned and logical assessment of what I have personally seen and done, based upon my needs as a photographer. I OWN/OWNED BOTH CAMERAS, and have many sample images.
So, what is the majority response? I am a troll, an agent of DPR, don't know what I am doing after 40 years in photography and 20 years doing astrophotography. I currently own an extensive line of Sony and now Pentax cameras and lenses. I have owned and used, and am quite familiar with Olympus, Canon platforms. I write software, some of it for imaging.
I expected better, but, it seems like the fanboys have nothing better to do.

Here is a quick and dirty noise comparison.
These are 100% crops, the left taken at 800 ISO and bumped up 2 stops in lightroom to 3200 equivalent,.
The crop on the right is the actual 3200 ISO image. Note that there is little difference, which sorta/kinda points to a ISOless sensor with good electronics behind it. Actually, looks a little better than the K-1.
More to follow ...

The K-1 is a great camera. The Mark II version offers almost nothing new - as noted in the "upgrade service" a new board and some software enhancements. I would have hoped for an updated sensor, but no. Not much after nearly two years. I would have put more money into expanding the FF lens line - which really needs it.

I don't understand this discussion? Are we talking about government mind control Ray's or something? How many of you are infrared photographers, astrophotograph ers, etc. These are established technologies with some great photographs out there. The K-1 us a great platform for these interest.

This is the Ricoh response to my concerns about overly aggressive noise reduction. I find the response quite satisfactory, and am also quite relieved that they are keeping their hands off of the raw image. RAW is RAW, folks ... and I don't want any non-selectable processing of a raw image before it gets to storage.
----------------------
Ricoh Imaging
Regarding the latest FW1.4 of K-1, it is enhance the performance of white dot noise reduction processing for JPEG image. This will not remove faint stars, basically it is improved the default original setting (but not applied for the noise reduction setting), customer worry about the stars will have been eaten that is related when turn ON the noise reduction mode. So, this latest FW will help customer who doesn't wants to use noise reduction setting and also get the expected image. (This improvement is applied for JPEG only but not for RAW)
Original setting (When Slow Shutter Speed NR is OFF and JPEG image) ---> Improved by FW1.4
Noise reduction setting ---> Remain no change

I think i am cursed ... here are detailed instructions on how to screw up everything:
STEP 1 - buy a nice M42 Pentax lens at a photo show
STEP 2 - buy a fotodiox M42 to K-mount lens adapter (BTW, the make very good XXX to Sony E-mount adapters)
STEP 3 - read warnings about getting the lens stuck in the screw part, and getting the adapter stuck in the bayonet part.
STEP 4 - try adapter in the camera body bayonet --- oops cant get it free - whew got it out.
STEP 5 - read more warnings about getting the adapter stuck, remove spring clip and screw from adapter as advised.
STEP 6 - tightly screw adapter onto lens
STEP 7 - attach lens + adapter to bayonet. tighten ... seems secure ... !!!
STEP 8 - start precise calibraton of Astrotracer
STEP 9 - as camera body is rotated, watch adapter come loose from bayonet, disengage the lens from the camera and drop the lens about 3 or 4 feet to the asphalt
STEP 10 - pick up lens off of the ground, point the lens to my temple, search for imaginary trigger, wishing to commit suicide
I am obviously engaging in the wrong pasttime - pephaps I will try heart surgery instead - anyone have any chest pains ... step right up ...

Does anyone know if this is correct??
The sensor in the Pentax K-1 is the same one found in the well-regarded Sony a7R, with great dynamic range and color accuracy.
