I've had the chance to get a loaner Monochrome for a few weeks. I paired it with the 60-250 and 1.7X TC to grab Moon shots. I'm impressed by the excellent noise handling. |

Hey guys, long time no see!
I've been taking (digital) photos intermittently the past two years. I did upgrade my editing software, started a photography related internship, uni is done for summer and it all somewhat rekindled my interest in taking photos.
Only a bit bummed that instagram is the wreck it currently is, but then I remembered that flickr still is a thing
Today I got an adapter in the post and I had to try it out..
Leitz Wetzlar #1 microscope lens > RMS to M42 adapter on bellows.
It's not focussed quite as I'd have liked, but the wind, the bug moving and my patience dwindling I called it a day.
These factors also meant that I didn't manage to get a decent image with a higher magnification. Bugging a Flower by Geoffrey's Creations, on Flickr
I'm pleasantly surpised by the behaviour of the lens, considering it's dated 1926!

Two shots from the Ningaloo Solar Eclipse on the 20th.
I learned about the eclipse a couple of weeks before it occurred, and was thoroughly surprised that I had managed to live under a rock for the last 12 months. It was big news around the country, and I just happened to be in the area.
Largely unprepared, I only had the lenses that I had with me, so I couldn't use my longer telephoto primes due to them being 1,500km away in storage. That left my K-1, Sigma APO 70-200mm and Tamron 1.4x teleconverter and some ND filters. I did my best, not knowing what really to expect.
The eclipse was a total eclipse although I was on the edge of the area where the total eclipse would be seen. It was projected to last for 62 seconds, but it seemed much, much shorter. The experience was absolutely wonderful. On the photography side, I did kinda blunder, as I didn't really know what to expect. These are about the best of what I could shoot, heavily cropped and pushed very hard in post ( +5 stops . . . ). One from just before the total eclipse, and the next from just after.
I do have shots with the sun completely blocked, however the drop in luminance within those few seconds is so severe that in a panic I ran the shutter speed out way too long and motion blur ruined the shots. Better to have dropped the aperture value drastically or to even have removed the ND filter completely. The lens combo is also very prone to flare, but you gotta work with what you have. Still happy that I got something, and I'll be better prepared for next time :).

Some of my favorite shots from the Spring photo workshop at the Tremont Institute. The camera body was my K-1 mk2. The first three images were shot with the DFA 70-210 and the fourth image was from the 31 Ltd.

I started photomicrography way back in the seventies, with Olympus OM-1. That body was light enough to be tied to the third ocular, and the Olympus catalogue was full of interesting accessories for micrography (even now, one of my microscopes is Olympus).
My extreme close-up shooting (10x-50x) dwindled down in the nineties, the Nikon F3 and F4 cameras which I had were just too heavy and cumbersome.
Last year I found time to resume my microscoping activities and I purchased my K-5 just for the purpose, intending to start to take pictures digitally. The technology and technique both have taken leaps and bounds since my analog days, and I just sort of gravitated to tethered picture capture.
I've since moved to industrial digital camera units, which I've learned to adapt for the purpose, as imaging units for microscopes and as standalone units using repro stands.

Here is a shot I took last week in the Bialowieski National Park in Poland. The largest population of European Bison (bos bonasus) in the wild is living there.
An exciting meeting, for sure.
Usually they are not very aggressive, but they are fast and strong ... my friend and I were with an experienced guide, so we felt somewhat safe.
In the 1920's the European Bison was nearly extinct. The last free animal was shot 1927 and only 12 animals existed in Zoos and game parks.
Today several thousand are living in several European countries again (but all originating from these 12 animals - the limited genetic diversity is an issues).
I rode on my motorbike to Poland and the longest lens I had with me was the A* 2.8/200. For this shot I used it on the K1 with a 1.5 TC. The picture is cropped to about 2/3 of the original frame. |
