Jim,
The way I found the Green Button to work is as follows:
1> Camera ring set to "M"
2> Focus switch set to "M"
3> ISO is NOT set to Auto (it is manually selected)
4> Green button will stop down lens & meter
5> Shutter speed is automatically set by camera on click
6> Bracketing works - in this case the shutter speed changes to get the three shots
The Green button (stop down metering) does not work if ISO is set to a range - the camera then meters and shoots with the lens wide open.

Thanks for the great discussion & contributions. A question I have is about the need to press the Green button - do I have to do this for EVERY shot, or will the camera remember this for a series of shots? Typically we take a set of shots of the same subject & setting, so you know what I mean.
Also, can we use bracketing to take a few shots with different exposures with manual lenses without the 'A' setting?
