No, I have not noticed that. Sometimes in landscape photography there sre color shifts due to postion of the sun, etc. but I don't believe I've seen any due to the lens.

Currently the lens living on my K-1 is a Pentax - DA HD 70 mm prime. I'm doing a project shooting one of the Colorado Rocky Mountain subranges and the 70mm perfectly frames a section of the mountain range I'm emphasizing. In fact, I purchased the 70mm specifically for that purpose. It's a very sharp lens and serves my purpose very well. I had, and still have, a 77mm also but it's doesn't quite cover the entire scene I'm shooting.

Pentax - DA 1:2.4 70mm LTD, on a K-1. It works best for the landscape project (mountains) I am currently working on.

My K-1 Turned One Bird Into Four!

I have never used RawTherapee and the only processing of PSR files I have ever done is some HDR merges and I did not realize at the time that Affinity Photo only used the first of the 4 PSR images for the HDR merge - at least, that's what I understand happened.

So I am quite lost in working with PSR files in RawTherapee and need help. I've found RawTherapee very difficult to understand (my fault, not it's). The only thing like an operators manual that I can find on the internet for RawTherapee is RawPedia and I've printed it and will study it. Are there any other manuals available for the software that would help me? I know there are instructional videos available but I learn much better from the printed page rather than verbal methods. I hope to acquire enough knowledge to be able to extensively process PSR files as they are so easy to shoot with my K-1 and, as I understand it, produce better images for some landscape work.

Thanks for the help and suggestions.

My K-1 Turned One Bird Into Four!

I've finally find some time to attempt to get this 4 bird file into RT, do enough to then be able to export it, and send it to Affinity Photo. But when I send the 4 bird file to RT it opens as a merged file of the four single bird files, that is, with only one bird. So RT is only opening one of the 4 files just as Affinity does. I was hoping RT would open the 4 merge file so I would have all 4 birds in the image but that has failed. Is there any way I can do that so I don't have to open each of the four files and re-merge them, but rather simply deal with the file with all 4 birds? All this is a bit hard to describe but my goal is to have a file with all 4 birds in the image and then process that to improve the image quality.

I'm finding RT absolutely mystifying!

Thanks.

Thanks for the info above. I will give it a try and post what happens but it may take awhile, given I am starting with zero knowledge of RawTherapee.

My K-1 Turned One Bird Into Four!

Thanks again for all of the replies and help. To clarify, here's what I want to do. I would like to keep the four birds in the image but to proceed to process that file with some routine adjustmemts - sharpness, haze reduciton, highlights / shadow adjustments, etc. I ordinarily do that in Affinity Photo but when I import the file into that program the image only has one bird, I assume because it's the first of the four exposures shot in PSR and AP can't process such a file, as has been described in the discussion above.

I have resurrected RawTherapee and immediately became lost in it, making me recall why I never progressed to using it. This is not the program's fault but mine, because of my limited understanding and skill using processing programs. So I would like to do whatever I need to do in RT to preserve the 4 birds when I move the file from RT to AP for further processing. If anyone can explain in detail the steps I need to do in RT to accomplish that I would be very appreciative. I would like to keep the involvement in RT as simple as possible, doing just enough to be able to export the file to AP and proceed from there with the four birds intact. I will have a lot of use for this in the future as I am currently shooting many mountain scenes using PSR and then HDR merges because of the high range from shadows to highlights, and as of now Affinity Photo simply uses the first exposure of PSR so I'm not gettng any benefit from PSR. At least, that's how I interpret the situation and some comparisons with PSR and non-PSR used in this way seem to bear this out. Thanks in advance for any suggestions and advice.

Thanks very much for the help. The instruction on turning off the feature in live view workered perfectly. Is this anywhere in the Operating Manual? I still can't find it. It certainly should be. If it isn't in the Manual how did you find it? Thanks to both of you.

Can't Turn Off Highlight Alert

Sometime recently the Highligh Alert function got turned on in my older K-1 and I have not been able to find a way to turn it off. I have searched throughout the Operating Manual and on page 15 there are instructions to set or unset this function in the Playback Mode menu. It says to "Set in (Highlight Alert) of (Image Display" in the 'arrow in box' menu".

My camera shows "LCD Display" instead ot "Image Display" but does then show Highlight Alert with a box to check for on and to uncheck for off. Despite unchecking the box my camera still shows the red Highlight Alerts in LIve View. I have turned this on and off several times by checking and unchecking the box and it continues to show the red alerts with the box either checked and unchecked.

This is the only place in the Manual that I have found any information on this but it is easy to miss things. If anyone has a solution to this problem I would be very appreciative. Thanks.

Thanks to all for the input, information, and advice. Somewhere buried in a computer I have RawTherapee and DCU. Haven't used them for quite some time but I will start for PSR files. Are there any other photo editing apps that will process PSR files? What about Luminar 4 - I have that one also. Thanks again.

My K-1 Turned One Bird Into Four!

I purchased a K-1 shortly after they were introduced and have used it almost exclusively for landscape phototgraphy. Since I moved to Colorado about two years ago that has been mostly mountain subjects. I've just had something happen that I've never experienced before with the K-1, although it makes perfect sense. This may be old news but I did not find mention of it in a search on this forum and thought I would share the experience.

I was shooting the Sangre de Cristos range, I think it can be called a subrange of the Rockies, a couple of days ago, K-1 on a tripod as usual, camera set to PSR without motion, and shooting a series of exposures manually for an HDR merge in editing software, when a good sized bird started to fly left to right directly across my field of view with the mountains in the background. I had no time to change any settings and hit the shutter button (cable shutter release). The camera was set to two second shutter delay and that turned out to be perfect as the bird not quite get to the midpoint of the scene.

When I got home and looked at the photo in my computer and monitor I was surprised to see four birds instead of one, perfectly evenly spaced across the scene. I'm assuming this is because of the PSR setting which caused four quick exposures, the bird traveling fast enough for the four to be spaced apart a bit. I can't think of any other explanation. I've attached the jpg version (I have HDR in position one, jpg in posltion two so I have a small file if I want to email one), and this one is SOOC.

One spinoff of this I have not been able to solve is that when I upload the file to my editing software (Affinity Photo) there is only one bird so I don't have a file with four birds to process, as I would like to do. Does anyone have a solution for that?

I wish this had happened somewhat further south in the Sangres as it is considerably more scenic and photogenic there. I was quite amused that I have used the K-1 for 3 - 4 years and never had this happen before (not enough birds I guess). I've found the K-1 to be a superb landscape camera and have been very happy to have it. As I said above, it this is old news I apologize. In any case, I hope some of you find this amusing as I did, quite an unexpected surprise. An 8 X 11.5 print of this shows the bird(s) in considerably better detail and sharper.

Monitor is Blank in Viewfinder Mode

Thanks for the compliment on my reading the manual. I do have a joke on this sort of situation "When all else fails read the instructions." But I don't actually follow that as, being an old guy mired in film era thinking, I could never manage use of a camera as complicated as the K-1 without a lot of manual referral and help. Since it's been over three years my K-1 manual is in tatters with a large amount of scotch tape holding it together.

It's a beautiful, although cold, day here in the Colorado mountains so I'm off to shoot the Sangre de Cristo range. Thanks again for the help - it's nice to have the camera operating again as I want it to.

Many thanks to kiwi and Bob 256. As they described, two pushes of the info button and then selecting the status screen fixed it. Is this anywhere in the Operators Manual? If so I sure couldn't find it even with hours of trying.

Thanks also to everyone else who responded. This forum is great for help. Best wishes for happy and safe holidays for all.

Monitor is Blank in Viewfinder Mode

I purchased my K-1 shortly after they were introduced and have given it a lot of use since, mostly for landscape use. I have never had any sort of problem with it until now and it is still my go to camera for landscape photography.

It has always shown various camera setting on the rear monitor when the optical viewfinder setting was being used and I have always used it that way, finding it a useful feature. Recently it has ceased showing any settings on the monitor when in viewfinder mode, the screen being totally blank. When changed to Live View mode the camera settings are there, around the edges, as before.

Before this started I was attempting to change various camera settings in proparation for shooting the Saturn - Jupiter convergence and I assume I must have inadvertently caused the change in monitor function in some unknown way. I have exhaustively read the Operator's Manual but can't find anything that relates to this problem. I have also done a search on this forum and not found anything.

Although the camera is still usable the way it is, the lack of settings on the monitor is somewhat of an inconvenience and I would prefer it to be the way it's always been up till now. Any insight or suggestions on getting it back to the way it was would be greatly appreciated.

For the "35mm or 50mm" you might consider the FA43mm Amigo. A wonderful lens although costly.

Help with installation of Pentax Digital Camera utility without CD

Sometime back I tried to do exactly that, install the program without a CD, but could not find a way to do it (although I did not have that blog entry). Nothing worked. Finally I made a plea on this forum for someone to loan me a CD, which someone kindly did, and then was finally able to install DCU.

I purchased my K-1 a few months after it's introduction, and being too broke from the cost of the purchase to afford oem batteries I purchased two DSTE branded batteries, from Amazon as best I recall, for less than the cost of one Pentax battery. The specs are 7,4V, 2400mAh. They don't last quite as long as the Pentax battery that came with the camera, but the difference isn't enough to cause any inconvenience and there hasn't been any problem of any sort. And they came with a very usable charger. That's my experience FWIW.

I've done quite a number of comparisons of the five HDR modes on my K-1 and my impression is that the auto setting does it's own blend and isn't one of the other settings that is picked and used. However, I am by no means certain of that. Auto was usually closest to 1 in my tests but didn't appear to be identical.

Adjusting infinity focus on the Irix 15mm f/2.4 -- need tips

I have this lens and it focuses accurately to infinity, The focusing ring has to moved beyond the little click at the infinity indicator but then it is focused at infinity. Perhaps you have a bad copy. I would suggest contacting Iriix about it. IMHO it's an excellent lens if a good copy and you might want to try another copy if Irix will send you one and accept that second one in return if it also doesn't focus properly.

Thanks again for the replies. I did check that all of the cartridges were in the correct position and they are. Other than that I haven't had time to work on this problem any further. The suggestion to use an online printer service has also occurred to me and sounds more and more like a possibility. I have used Costco.com in the past and was satisfied with the service and results. It's just that it's so nice to come home after shooting landscapes, do some processing of a few chosen images, and then be able to look at prints immediately. So I'll keep working on the problem, at least for awhile.

Thanks to both of you for the advice. I replaced the yellow cartridge with a new one and that did improve the image, the purple spots on the pine trees vanishing and a normal green color resulting there. The overall purple cast also largely vanished but now the image over the blue and white mountains and sky is faded but the greens are normal. I tried removing all of the cartridges and reinserting them with no improvement. I tried to re-install the drivers but couldn't find them yet - will look further today. I didn't really think it's part of this problem but since a monitor calibration was due anyway I did that using the Datacolor Spyder X with no improvement resulting.

I have to say that this much praised printer hasn't worked very well for me right from the beginning (I've had it about 9 months), even at the beginning the print quality for landscapes being sub-par, the quality from my quite old Pixma 922 all in one printer being better. This must surely be from my ineptitude and deficient knowledge concerning most things digital, being an old guy stuck in the film era and when a calculator was the most high tech device available!

Thanks again for the help. I'll keep working on it to best of my poor abilities.

My Canon Pro 100 has suddenly started printing with very inaccurate colors, an overall light purple cast, especially in the sky, and some intense darker purple spots where there are distant pine trees in the image. I've run Canon's print head cleaning procedure without much improvement. and replaced most of the cartridges. Any thoughts on the cause? Thanks.

This thread has confused me. The Pentax A lenses are manual focus, auto aperture. So "compatibility' doesn't mean AF in this case does it?
