1) File was in root directory (outside of "DCIM" folder)
2) extracted from .zip to .bin
3) correct update downloaded
4) tried both SD1 and SD2 with multiple cards
5) have two fully charged batteries
And 6... since I still had the v1.10 update in my download folder, when I extract the new v1.20 zip, the .bin file that was extracted was given an extra digit. Instead of being fwdc228b.bin, it was extracting as fwdc228b 2.bin. Once I removed the "_2" the update screen came up just fine.
I think Pentax needs to remember to give updates different names so that the extraction file isn't given another differentiating digit in the case that another (older) update is still sitting in your Downloads folder.

Somehow I can't seem to be able to get the update prompt by "turning the camera on while pressing the menu button". I'm doing the same procedure that I did to update from v1.00 to v1.10 but the prompt never comes. The camera just turns on as if the .bin file isn't there. Idk... tried multiple formatted cards... I'm perplexed and pissed

I'd go with the 24-70 and then for W-I-D-E astro shots get a good copy of the samyang/rokinon 14mm f/2.8

I would like to keep the files recording in .PEF because I like the way lightroom processes the Pixel Shift from PEF vs DNG... however I cannot see the thumbnails in Finder on Mac. I can only see thumbnails if recorded in DNG.
Any help is appreciated...

I had these questions and couldn't find the answers... now I know so I thought I'd share:
The Phoenix Aion with the canon cable works. In order to be able to do the intervalometer shooting with it in Bulb mode, the Bulb Mode Option (C1-6) must be set to Type 1. The shortest interval that was working for me was 0.2 seconds.
hope this helps any prospective pentaxians :)

I'm coming from a Fuji XT1...
I'll say the battery life will be significantly better with Pentax... any DSLR has better battery life than mirrorless.
High ISO from FUJI, especially the XT2 and XPro2 is very solid... image quality in general is. That may be a tossup. Where Fuji takes the cake is their Xtrans sensors which do not use a typical Bayer layout of RGB pixels. It renders colors very nicely!
Fuji will probably be lighter.
AF with the XT2 is going to be hard to beat assuming you're using a pro-level lens (i.e. some of the primes and the 16-55 f/2.8, 50-140 f/2.8, 100-400 f/2.8)
XT2 has 4k video if that's important...
depending on lens choices, most likely Fuji is less weight.
Hopefully I answered some questions

Agreed, I'm coming from Fuji and I love that they have threaded shutter buttons not just on bridge cameras but many of their mirrorless cameras.

Yea, I'm dumb... I looked around at a 3D image of the camera and saw where the wired remote jack is... under the SD card slots.

From what I've been able to find, pretty much all previous models of APSC pentax cameras have a 2.5mm jack for wired remote release.
I haven't been able to find much about this topic on the K1... everyone just seems to recommend the infrared remote:
1) Does the K1 have the 2.5mm jack for a remote release?
2) Is this jack the mic or the headphone jack?
3) Anyone have experience using the (canon compatible (2.5mm jack)) Phoenix Aion with their K1?

It is a rectilinear lens... and distortion is supposedly corrected for pretty well... though I'm guessing there still probably is some

I'll bet it's right from the factory. They do a few types of test shots in factory on every camera (at least most brands do) to make sure it's functioning.

Good point... slight crop and then process for panorama seems like a viable option. I just don't find myself lugging around my equatorial mount as much as I'd like to so I wanted to make sure I could still get some solid results before getting rid of it. Thanks

Do you know if a panorama would help fix that?
Let's say I'm doing a pano of the whole milky way... If I left a little more overlap between frames, would photoshop or LR or other pano software replace the trailed stars with the stars from the center of the frame on the adjacent image?

Hey pentax people,
I'm currently waiting for my first pentax to arrive... so I figured I'd join the forum.
I am selling my iOptron Skytracker tonight but before I do so, I wanted to ask a question about star-trailing with the astrotracer function of the K1:
It seems pretty well documented that the optimal focal lengths for the astrotracer are somewhere between 50-300mm...
So, for anyone using an ultra wide angle lens (i.e. Rokinon 14mm on the FF K1), my question is will the astrotracer still give me any extra time without producing trails? I've seen a lot of images of the astrotracer being used with the 14mm and what you see is star trailing in the corners. According to the 500 rule, I could avoid star trails all together with an exposure of < 35 sec (so let's just say 30 sec). If I turned on the astrotracer and set the exposure for one more stop (60 sec), will I still start to see the trailing in the corners? Or will the astrotracer function work well enough to give me maybe a 60 sec exposure without trails?
Hoping someone has some experience with this...
