Architecture Buckstaff Blues

Thanks Mike. There are some really interesting buildings down there. My wife grew up in Siloam Springs, so I've spent a good bit of time in the north over the last couple decades, but this is the first time I actually made it to the south half of Ark. I did some shooting in the Ouachita Lake area as well, which I'm processing. I've found that framing good focal points and compositions is actually pretty challenging in the Ozarks due to there not being as many dramatic features as the higher mountain chains.

Buckstaff Bathhouse in Hot Springs National Park has excellent clean lines and beautiful blues that really showcase just how good the Pentax-DA* 11-18mm really is. The image received minimal corrections in DXO Photo Lab for for geometry and highlights. Shooting time was about an hour before sunset using the indirect light to avoid blowing out the brilliant white highlights. I've been incredibly happy with this lens for landscapes and architecture.

Thanks. I had a different shot with some historic architecture planned out, but too many people moving around in the area and getting rowdy made it impossible. I did the standard close up corona shots, but figured I'd enter something a little different.

Hello from Colorado to my Kansas Neighbors! Welcome aboard!

As in "little Sweden" and land of the roaming Dala horse?

You all should check out photographer Mickey Shannon sometime (he's based out of Wichita). He's not a Pentaxian, but does KS justice phographically.

The Eclipse as seen through the pine branches in Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas. The breeze moving the trees made the focus challenging.

I have found Simon to be good at giving practical advise without any of the click-bait and silliness of many Youtubers. A lot of his videos are basic, but there are some very solid ones even for experienced photographers.

Thanks! I had been sitting watching this Osprey for awhile and could tell it had spotted something in the water as it flew overhead. The diving shot was very fortunate as I wasn't sure if I had locked focus in time or not.

This is what he looked liked just before the dive.

Lots of fun watching an Osprey Fishing up at St Vrain. Great place for bird watching. The new 55-300 PLM has been serving me well for casual birding.

Excellent, especially the last shot. I love shooting Ospreys. At this point I have figured out where many of the nesting pairs are each summer here in Colorado. Watching them strike a fish is always impressive.

Composited from a series of 8 images in Microsoft ICE after developing each RAW in DXO PL5, and then harmonizing the lighting and color after composite stitching. Shot July 3rd 2023.
The full size image is intended to print as a large wall hanging, so you can see the cow's facial expressions when the image is not compressed :P

Was flipping through the menus in my K-3iii after it came yesterday and had not looked at the recommended setting before- funny thing is I ended up configuring it almost the same as recommended in the article! Good advice!

Just got My new K-3iii yesterday as well along with the DA* 11-18mm 2.8. I have been shooting with the K-3 for years this is definitely a more refined camera. Great viewfinder and great screen, but still has the familiar K-3 feel. Have only had time to tool around the neighborhood after work so far, but will be doing a mountain trip this weekend to break it in.

Ricoh refurbished camera quality

I ended up ordering a new Black K-3iii and the 11-18mm 2.8 to replace my K-3 and 12-24mm. I have several national park shooting trips coming up this summer and the price drop this month was good enough reason for me to pull the trigger. I was tempted to get the Silver with the battery grip BH still had available, but I just can't warm up to the glittery silver paint. If it were bare magnesium or aluminum I would have been all over it.

Thanks for the replies. I was aware of the 90 day warranty, but didn't see the 14 day return policy. Only silver K3iii available as open box, but I want black so was thinking of going for the refurbish option. for $1400 now it is tough to beat.

EDIT- looks like I was too slow. The one that was available this morning is no longer listed.

Has anyone purchased a refurbished camera from Ricoh direct? I am considering the K-3iii refurb, but they don't give any shutter count or grading information other than "may have minor cosmetic wear" and the return policy seems unclear. If they are very clean sub 5k shutter cameras then it seems like not a bad idea given the 90 day warranty.

Misc Balloon Squares Composite

Thank you!
The focus was on shape and color so i deliberately kept the pilots out of the shots.
As far as the color, the sky was a clear blue that morning and I desaturated the blue channels and change the luminosity to achieve the B&W contrast both in the balloons and the sky itself. The cyan channel in the bottom left was retained to keep some color balance.

Thanks for the comments- that's not a bad idea. I was basing the layout on the lighter/darker sky behind each balloon- guess I could adjust that too, but I liked the checkered look. Rotating a couple balloons for the light could clean it up though. My kids found it very amusing watching me chase balloons all morning like crazy person with a camera.

I used a couple different lenses to shoot these during a balloon festival over the course of about 30 minutes. Sizes were cropped to uniform and then blue spectrum translated to greyscale and composited.

I think the current pano cut is ideal, but if you were to chop it down to a standardized size you could do a 2:1 like this.
Otherwise, minor lens flare is the only adjustment.

I keep looking at some of these listings coming up and it just doesn't seem like that great of a value to get a moderate wear body for only a few hundred off vs buying new. Hoping for a small sale around the holidays when bonuses come out...

Given 99% of my editing is in DXO4, this ( and the $$) have been my major obstacles to upgrading to a K3iii. I have been going back through old photos after upgrading to DXO4 and have been able to salvage many images I had given up on previously. The Deep Prime does wonders on cleanup when I need to do high contrast editing- I love this software.
