K 5-II and Silkypix - About color

I defiantly will keep an eye out for Rio next time I am browsing the forum! ;)

Anyway thanks so much for your reply again! Really helpful. The tip of shooting RAW+JPG at the same time I instantly setup in my camera, and be using that next time too when reviewing my pictures.

Also thanks for illuminating about unsharp mask. It does clear up a little of my questions. And I'll be studying the links you gave. I need to try and see and let sink in what it does.

When printing: Do you let the printing company "optimize color" too than? Or is that an option you keep switched off? Just curious.
Anyway, I have to say that until now I printed via local groceries stores. So maybe not the best place to begin with. Though I am sure that nice pictures can come from there too and a lot of my disliking has to do with to much / wrong post-processing. But last week I ordered my pictures via an printing company (where the pro's go they advertise). I just got those pictures in this morning and I have to say I really do like these pictures. Part of them where ordered with "optimize color" - which I reckon is actually about the same (automated) process I do with Silkypix in my case. So maybe not the smartest thing to do. But anyway, they turned out to be really nice actually.

Also it was very helpful to read your adjustments to make. I take from it that it really is a lot a matter of preference. And I am glad to read the confirmation of that. Personally I like the picture to be less vivid. And less contrastly. But that it is nice to read that it really is a matter of taste. Sounds silly but I was looking for that.

What maybe brought me off was for example a piece in the manual of Silkypix that reads: True colors in photo are not always "beautiful colors."
It is common knowledge that colors in our memory, or colors of an object that we perceive are different from actual colors. Although they differ in individuals, we can see a trend and directional characteristic.
We consider the picture "beautiful" when colors in our memory or colors we perceive are printed in the photo. (
4.6.4.2. Memory color)

Again, it is very nice to read your opinion and experience. It really does help finding my own path.

And yes, I slowly, very slowly, get in the habit of using Silkypix to develop more pictures at once. Your tips are read and will return to them again to make them my own. Actually when returning to Silkypix yesterday, after months of inactivity, I found I was actually quite a bit more fluent to when I left of months ago. But it is really nice to do so, in bulk, just so not to be overwhelmed by the amount of photo's, and changes you can make to them.

Thanks again! Like I said I will return to this post more than once to make your tips mine. Really helpful to read your experience.
Also, thanks to you too bschriver11. I had a wee look at the Pixlr photo editor. I do keep it parked for the moment, simply because I am already overwhelmed with the options I got ;) But do appreciate the tip and maybe use it in the future.

Sorry for the overuse of the words really nice, actually and anyway. Thank again! And if more people would still like to react with their experiences, be that in Silkypix or one of the many other programs alike, I would really be glad reading it!

Take care,
Maurits

Would you use your software color or camera color for your pictures? What do you guys use? I am a bit overwhelmed.

I use a K 5-II, with da* 50-135. I use SilkyPix studio pro 7. And am a hobbyist. - I actually sold that lens last weekend, after an period of not camera-ing (and needing cash). But at the very last moment actually made some really fun pictures with my mom and dog. Photos that I have to print, and they underway to me at the moment. So I am diving into my old pictures as well and find it a shame I printed so few of them. That I bought expensive software and expensive (second-hand) camera and lens(es) reflects nothing of my ability to shoot nice pictures. I liked taking pictures before too (obviously). But wasn't so stuck-up about them in the last moment. Anyway, ..

For example I have here a picture of my mate's dog. First the out-of-the-camera picture:

Than the same picture but the "auto-exposure-bias" upped a little bit making the photo brighter. Keeping the camera's "white balance" and "color":

The same picture, besides upping the "auto-exposure bias" the "white balance" has been changed to "auto (natural). An Silkypix algorithm that plays with the white balance and makes the picture looks like:

Lastly I can change the color as well to in this example "memory color 2", making it slightly more vivid. With this result:

I have to say that the histogram of this picture (varies a little over the above of course) is not so nice. So maybe not a really good example picture.

Also you can change a lot more than just these automated settings, of course.

My thinking now anyway has been "have to use this software, period.". But it changes so much as well as you can see. Subtle or not. And than I am thinking I have the cream de la lenses (and camera). Or at least half way there. How much should I change from the picture? Should I change anything at all? Except maybe leveling and/or cropping the photo. Our Pentax lenses said to give one of the nicest color and stuff. And what am I doing with it?! Though at the same time I bought serious software that should be good in doing its trick as well. So maybe I am asking where you think is a good balance between the two. Or really just a matter of personal taste?

Now I also have to say that I was a bit let down by the pictures I did print in the past. All in 10 x 15 cm (4"x 6"inch). And I know for sure I played around probably to much with Silkypix then. I am sure btw that that is all on me and not the software's fault of course. Just saying. I should really print out as much pictures actually before asking questions about that I reckon now.

So this thread turned around to be a little my little diary. My apologies. But my question to you is:
- Do you use software too? Silkypix or Lightroom or one of the many others?
- Or do you just print (and maybe edit a bit on your camera) directly?
- Do you change a lot from your pictures? And this question is mostly color / white balance oriented. But maybe I am overlooking something besides leveling and cropping I would like to hear so (sharpening and noise of course..).
- When printing your pictures: Do you use glossy or mat?
- Do you even print pictures this small? 10 x 15 cm (4" x 6" inch) It is the size I am used to still.

- Am I taking this to serious?

And lastly I wanted to add this picture. It is the same as the first. Out-of-camera. But when developing in Silkypix I saved it with an "unsharp mask":

I wanted to ask about what this "unsharp mask" is, seeing barely difference between the two. But upon saving these pictures in 640x425 or so, and seeing them in full screen, you can see quite good there is a difference for example around the eyes. The "unsharp mask" is sharper?

Anyway, why would you want to develop your pictures with an unsharp mask normally? Not with pictures shot on my Pentax printing them in 10 x 15 cm (4" x 6" inch) I guess? Or am I wrong?

Sorry people, asking a bit away here. I know a lot of this is searchable. And for that matters I kindly ask you push me in the right way ;) I am not lazy, I read and read so much already. But I stranded on this bit last time and so this thread. Mainly asking about the difference between where to keep the character of the camera/lens you use and where to use software. Or your thoughts and experiences anyway.
Maybe my question is actually when a picture is already done, like the above (i think it is done ;)), how much should/would you retouch? I found out I could pimp a few Whatsapp photos to be reasonable when I printed them on 10 x 15 cm (4" x 6" inch). But maybe I shouldn't do anything with pictures already nice? Except developing them to .jpg or so?
I myself actually like the first picture best, though maybe a tad dark, nice blue. But for some reason end with the fourth because I think that's better.

Attached 3 screenshots for if you are curious about how Silkypix, the histogram and the "unsharp mask" screen looks like.

Thanks for reading, sorry for my English. Take care,

Maurits

All nominated are absolutely stunning. Congrats for that alone to all. Truely isn't one I dislike. So much so that I think it is going to be #1 for me. But I wait a moment before casting my vote definitely, cause I think my head is just clogged up from all these beautiful pictures.

It is not picture perfect. But it is one I like. One of the first pictures I took with my camera, plus one of the first of street photography I ever made. It is a lucky shot of a couple wearing their lucky suit.
