Any of the 50 1.7 MFD 450mm
I understand that the 1.4 are slightly softer at maximum aperture where the 1.7 is sharper at max.

Another thing to consider is do you have any filters on the front of the lenses? My personal experience is they soften my images and I no longer use them.
It might be because I haven't got the absolute best quality but I'd rather save the money for another lens😁
The above is not an absolute as I do use CP filters. I don't own any ND filters as I haven't needed any.... yet.

Just tried my Kenko pz/AF 2x on my K5iis with a sigma 18-200hsm and it works up to about 80mm zoom which I think indicates that aperture is getting too dark for pdaf to work.
This seems to indicate to me that it should function with a 2.8 lens. I wonder if the optics are slightly cloudy ? Try using live view as cdaf is different to pdaf. Made a difference on my KP.

Mine seems to work cdaf not pdaf on KP ?? More testing required when I have time.
1.5 works on K1, 2 has difficulty, needs good light this is on the 28-105 DFA.

The rubber should stretch over the front, it might have got itself stuck to the barrel due to age. A fine piece of hard plastic should be able to be slipped under to loosen it up. My A135 was like that.

To put it politely "bummer"
I got my 150-500 HSM OS on gumtree with a K7 for $600 but that's a few years ago. Patience is the key while practicing technique and experimenting with software.
Bargains do happen.

One other option is ai software for deeper cropping. Some have trial periods so you can see if the results are good enough for you.

The 1.7 AF is designed to convert manual focus lenses to AF. It was made by Pentax. There's other 1.5 converters by Kenko etc that have pz/AF in their name which allows use of modern AF lenses. None of these record the change of focal length

---------- Post added 03-24-24 at 09:20 AM ----------

In Aus there's also cash converters as an option, I have purchased several bits from them and have even negotiated better prices. They currently have two Sigmas one has no photo or postage option but ask and they will help

More random thoughts,
Only records sensor raw data to card no jpeg or video. So no imaging engine and associated power drain. No rear screen again power and weight saving. Develop SD card through a seperate plugin for a computer. MP of sensor will be dependent on availability.
My version of the DSuperA

As to the K3III being an expensive TC you would need a 2.5-3x TC to get same pixel density of image capture on the K1 and it would need to be high quality to not degrade the image. Then there's the improved AF and frame rate that a TC cannot give. There are very few instances where FF is better and there are instances where crop is better. I would suggest that for 95% of photography there is no discernible difference. Forgot to mention no loss of light either f stop remains constant.

It could be an optional screen. You want it you pay extra. How it clips on and interfaces with the camera is an engineering challenge fit for the Pentax engineers.
