ive been intimidated by learning flash photography for a while but after reading strobist enough and even just using the pop up as daytime fill, i really want to learn it. Just took the plunge and ordered a sigma ef500 super for my birthday along with a 3ft coiled ttl cord and im super excited to start playing with the flash and then check out the instructions in a few days

the 58 is a bit out of my price range. would you suggest the sigma 530 super over the metz 48?

sigma 530 super vs metz 48

i'm looking into getting my first flash and cant decide between the sigma ef-530dg(Pentax P-TTL Flash Comparison: Sigma EF-530 DG Super) super and the metz 48 af-1(Pentax P-TTL Flash Comparison: Metz Mecablitz 48 AF-1 Digital). they both seem to be on about the same level of performance (function wise) with the sigma a bit stronger, but also more confusing. it seems like the sigma also doesnt have as much fine tuning when it comes to output level. also the sigma is listed as doing wireless and wireless p-ttl, but the metz is only listed as wireless p-ttl slave- is this what they talked about when they say the metz cannot be used as a master/controller?
i dont know too much about flash but i'm trying to get into it and ill likely be using the flash on a pc cord and maybe the new cactus v4s since theyre so cheap and it would let me learn a lot about flash quickly
thanks for all help

any guesses as to how much an 18-55 wr would run alone? or a 50-200 wr?
im sticking with my k10 until the k7 comes down a whole lot but the new (hopefully) affordable water resistant lenses are the biggest excitement for me.

i feel like k3d would not have scene modes, as it appears the camera between the k20 and km does

Always use lens hood?

one situation where lens hoods can be a detriment to your photo is when doing portraits of the camera shy. a lens hood makes any lens look much more intimidating.

I'm pretty sure my k10 came with a knockoff katz eye. I got it on ebay with the split prism installed and the standard screen in a case, but the split prism on mine is diagonal, so i dont think its a legit katzeye. the prism starts dimming early, but with careful eye placement its still usable at 8 or 9. i cant think of a time i would ever need a split prism to be funtional past 6.3 (slowest lens i own is the kit lens cause i needed a cheap af that could go wide) because i dont use any extention tubes or TCs or any other add ons really.
I honestly could not really imagine using an slr much without a split prism. even with af, you can use the prism to make sure it focused on what you wanted it to, not something else thats in the af zone.

promaster spectrum 7 60-300 f/4-5.6 at around 200mm (on tripod), stopped down to f/5, its probably its sharpest around 8 or 11.
lens has a lot of fungus but was free so i figured id see if its any good and its not too bad

it looks like you slide a thin piece in where the regular eyepiece goes, then screw the magnifier into that

Sigma 24-60

it could stand to be wider, and now that you mention it, longer, but for a lens that violates the rules of lens buying, theres gotta be a compromise. its cheap, good iq, and fast, so i guess the best zoom range is out of the question. i would very much like to get the 12-24 at some point to complement it but i feel like thats probably a year away, being a college student and all and hey, while im dreaming, the da* 60-250 f/4 would be nice when it comes out, or maybe a 70-200 f/2.8

im loving this lens so far, its an awesome step up from the kit lens (though i havent compared it to my m50 f/2) and seems to really be a solid piece of glass, great value

just got mine last night, its pretty sweet so far but i havent had much time to play with it
balances pretty well on my k10. build quality is great, and its so nice having that constant 2.8. autofocus seems decent but it hunts a bit in real low light, but im so used to manual focus at this point that it doesnt bother me much

i have a sigma 24-60 f/2.8 on the way from cameta, just ordered it today
seems to be the best quality value, the 24-70 is way bigger from what ive heard and ive seen no bad reviews for the 24-60. its not quite as wide or long as id like, but since im working on building a system, its good to cover most of the "normal" range.
the m 50mm f/2 is sweet though, its my favorite lens in my kit and basically lives on my camera. real good lens for the 20 bucks you can get it for, but i found a k10 with a split prism already in it on ebay and jumped on it since i was used to having that with my me super

I'm a sophomore in college, and when i get to my digital photog class this semester, i see that only 3 people in the class did not have nikons, 2 of them were canons and the third was me with a pentax k10 and m50 f/2
i had a pentax me super for film class a few years ago, got a canon powershot s3is (pentax doesnt even make a superzoom) and when i decided to upgrade to a dslr, im so glad i didnt switch to canon like i was thinking about. the in body sr, capability to use my manual glass and overall package offered seemed to really trounce the similarly priced canikons.
makes me wonder why ive only ever run into one other person with a pentax dslr at my school and around the city

Why "Scene Modes" Upset Some On The K200D?
Posted By jawn doe

its not that i feel like im better than you for not using scene modes, its that i feel like im bettering my skills as a photographer by not using them. i understand they can make some situations easier but the whole reason i got a dslr is to have as much control over the output image as possible, which is why i rarely use anything other than M and AV with exposure composition and occasionally TV when i specifically want to freeze or blur a subject.
i dont know exactly what goes through the cameras mind when it does what it does for a scene mode, but i know that i would rather just learn what to do myself. the only time i ever use full auto on a camera is on a point and shoot while im on a vacation going snowboarding or something and just want snapshot memories, not photographs.
i dont think im a snob for not wanting scene modes, its just something ive never found myself using even with my canon superzoom and i would rather my camera be less cluttered with things i wont use, keep it simple.
i upgraded to get better images and as much control as possible and i feel that most of the time a scene mode takes too much of the control away from me is all. i dont think any less of people for using scene modes- just aint my cup of tea

Km vs K20D High ISO

keep in mind the differences beyond image quality.

the control layout is a bit different. i tried a friends k200 adter shooting for a few months with my beloved k10 and realized that i really like having 2 control dials. also theres a lot more controls on the back of the k20 and a lcd on the top

(courtesy of dpreview.com)

the k20 has full weather sealing, the k-m does not
k20 has an 11 point autofocus, k-m has 5 point
k20 has expanded 6400 iso, k-m has 3200
the k20 has a burst mode at a lowered resolution, but otherwise the fps is very similar
the km is WAY smaller than the k20

overall the k-m is a different camera intended for different audiences

and it might just be me, but i upgraded to a dslr from my canon s3is for more control over my images (as well as better iq, but that goes without saying) and i hate having scene modes on the dial, id much rather learn why the camera might make the decision it would for the scene, and be able to do it better myself. the camera will choose what it thinks is the best settings but i might not agree. it just kind of irks me since id never use them and using full manual mode with my old mf lenses was one of the main things that made me decide to stick with pentax when i was thinking about canikon cameras, and i truly do not regret it for a second. well, the 85 1.2 would be sweet but i could never afford that anyway so what difference does it make
