Thanks both. I'd found mgregnis' flash guide, though for some reason hadn't seen the thread linked to by Paul the Sunman when I'd searched before posting.

Most of the information in the original post can be found in those other places, and so at least newcomers who find this short thread will have a handy signpost of sorts.

Hopefully this thread will be useful for everyone new to Pentax, or new to the K-1, or new to photography.

I'll be ordering my K-1 in the next week or so, and am just trying to figure out what my starter kit will be. Over time, of course, I'll want to buy all kinds of gear, but for those of us for whom money IS an object, we have to set our sights somewhere realistic to begin with. :hmm:

Having decided on the body and lenses, I've come to flash. Right now I just need recommendations for my first flashgun to use on-camera with the K-1, but this thread could be much more useful than that.

So it would be great if you knowledgeable folks could outline some kind of ideal-world incremental model as a reference point. Let's assume budget is an issue, so pitch it somewhere middle-ish, maybe offer a proprietary and 3rd-party option at each stage.

This is the sort of thing I'm thinking, assuming the user will start off using just one flashgun and gradually build kit as they earn and learn:

1. One flashgun (with both TTL and manual modes, to keep this simpler), to be used mostly on-camera, but which will later work with in combination with a number of flashguns
2. Accessories for the single flash, eg modifiers, rotating brackets, wireless transceivers
3. Secondary flash (that will talk to the first one)
4. Accessories for multiple flash use
5. Tertiary flash (that will talk to the first and second)
6. Etc.

Overall it depends if you will feel happy and satisfied using mainly (or exclusively) DA lenses on a FF camera. Personally I wouldn't, because I'd always feel I was falling short somehow. I guess this is my insecurity though (!) - after all, it'll be you taking the photos, not the gear you use. Anyway, I'd still prefer to wait until the price drops and I can afford 2-3 FF lenses to go with it... but if you can make it work for you, and won't feel like you're settling, go for it.

Welcome dsp52! Newbie here too. I was very much into photography a number of years ago, and had portfolios published in a number of magazines etc, but it was my career that got in the way. Now I have a daughter who's only 9 months old, so I'm hoping I'll still be able to find some time somewhere to get photography back in my life!

FWIW I was a Canon man before, and Pentax is all new and exciting to me. I'm going for the K-1 so the lenses I've looked into are all full-frame, obviously not incompatible with the K-1 but you've arguably got a better choice with the DA range.

Thanks everyone for being so welcoming. 'Upcoming' parenthood has long come up: she's 9 months old now, and I'm feeling like we're starting to come out of the fog!

Thanks too for your kit suggestions. Some really useful points.

What I want for starters is an all-purpose walk-around lens, a street lens, standard lens, a portrait lens and a macro. That was the guiding theory of my selections.

Next up will be a lens that will prove a good addition in the studio, which is a field I've not done much work in to date but want to develop this year through clubs and workshops etc. I'll also look to add something wider a bit later on (I'm a city boy these days and so am happy for the all-purpose lens to cover the wider end, at least for the first year or so of my Pentax journey).

Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro Lens with K1??

Thanks to everyone for their replies. In summary, what I take away is this:

- Great lens
- Should work with the K-1
- Unusual FL for a macro

On that basis, I'll keep my eye out for a good deal, but probably go for the suggested 100mm macro to start off with and treat the Sigma as a supplementary lens if I can grab one for a good price at some point.

Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro Lens with K1??

Morning everyone,

Is there any reason why the Sigma 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro wouldn't be a good option for the K1?

Specs suggest it should be fine, but I can't find it listed as an option or suggestion on any sites (whether online stores or review sites/blogs) - makes me think I'm missing something. Don't want to make an expensive mistake.

Any K1 users out there enjoying this combo??

Morning Pentax world,

Just a quick post to say hi.

I'm a Canon user of 15+ years, but last year sold the lot to raise funds for the impending doom of parenthood. Now I'm in the pit of photographic despair and trying to scrape pennies out of the back of the sofa to buy the K1 and a handful of lenses. Can't wait to join the Pentax gang... Hopefully I should have everything within a month or so. Here's the kit I'm thinking of getting and the dilemmas I face. Thoughts welcome!
