How often do you print?

I use a 6 ink Epson 1400 printer. When printing color I'm happy to use Epson inks. However, I rarely print color so for my B&W images I use Jon Cone's carbon inks on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag.

How often do you print?

Great thread! I think printing images that move you is very important. I print all my favorite images, mat them and keep them in portfolio boxes. I don't sell or exhibit my images but I love sharing them with family and friends. Seeing an image on social media is fine but when you hold a matted image in your hands it's magical! And my prints are relatively small, 9 x6.

Recently I needed to print the attached two images for a special friend so I sent an email to a bunch of friends and said I was firing up the printer and would anyone like a print? Giving art to friends and family is a wonderful gift.

Is it expensive? Depends. I buy my mats in bulk. I buy museum quality rag mats. I just bought 50 mats with a custom window size and 50 blanks for backing and it cost me $400. That's $8 in mats for each image. Is that expensive? Not for me to say but I know lunch at McDonalds cost more!

I use an Epson 1400 printer that cost me less than $250. You can't buy them anymore because they were discontinued many years ago which goes to show you my printer cost per image is negligible.

Print, print and then print some more!

645Z Lightroom Tethering?

I am new to tethering so please take my comments with that in mind.

I'm using a windows 10 laptop. I just upgraded lightroom, loaded the Pentax tethering software and then downloaded from the pentax website (support) Transmitter 2 update and Tethered capture plug in, (below the firmware updates). After reading this thread last night I was worried about the comment that the images went straight to the PC and were not written to the SD cards. I tested the rig this morning and it writes to both the PC and the SD cards.

Soooooo, my only recommendation is to check and see if you have the latest updates for Transmmiter 2 and Tethered Capture: Software Downloads

Cactus V6 Flash trigger

Just wanted to pass on to anyone interested that I am super happy with the Cactus V6 Flash trigger.

I have a Z and 3 Nikon SB600s. I put one unit on the Z in transmit mode and the other units under the SB600s in receiver mode on any of the 4 channels. I can adjust the flash intensity on any of the remote channels from the unit on the Z. I have even put a Cactus between the Z and the Nikon flash and used as an "Onboard" flash. Super easy to use and very inexpensive.

Have a great week.......Mark

Funny, I just went into my bag to get the Pentax model # off the back of the remote and it's not a Pentax! It's a Vello IR-P1!

Do you think the Pentax model will work any better?

Remote Shutter Release for Z

I use a tripod and remote release for 90% of my work. I currently have a Pentax remote infrared and a short Pentax wired remote.

The infrared works but requires me to focus on where the remote is pointing and sometimes requires a couple of pushes to fire the camera. I like to focus completely on my subject and fire instantaneously, sometimes from few feet to the side of the camera and sometimes in rapid succession. The infrared is just not up to the task.

The wired remote works intermittently.

So, I'm looking for another wired remote and I cannot confirm the size of the male end needed to fit the Z; I think it's 2.5mm. If it is 2.5mm, can I use a generic remote or one labeled "Canon Sub Mini" to fire the Z?

How often do you use your D or Z handheld?

Hand held 645z, 645 A150mm, f5,ISO 200, 1/500s, manual focus and shutter priority.

The first image is full frame and the second image is not a full 100% crop, (I don't know the exact %).

Soooo, my 2 cents.....Shoot your z hand held, shoot sports, shoot wildlife, shoot anything you would shoot w/a DSLR!

First time posting an image. Love the site and thought I'd show support by participating. Fairly new to the Z but really enjoying it and the help from you guys.

I shot this in Manual mode at 1/6s, f11, 100 ISO. Don't remember the lens and am surprised it wasn't included in the metadata capture. All my lenses are prime and are either A or FA.

Anyway, thanks for your help and hopefully, especially if you blow smoke up my a__, I'll keep posting!

645Z and lenses in 10 degree weather!

I'm heading up to the Sequoia Nat Park next week and the temps will be in the 0 to 26 degree range. I have zero experience in cold weather with camera equipment.

I have read that the problems w/moisture is when you bring the equipment in from the cold. I will have each lens and the Z in freezer bags to minimize the condensation as the temps change. Anything else I need to do? Am I better off leaving the equipment in the truck overnight vs bringing it into the lodge?

Thanks......Mark

Bag recommendations for 645z and 3-4 lenses?

I am thrilled with the Mountainsmith Parallax backpack: Parallax | B&H Photo Video

Two Key features for me: When I lay the backpack on the ground to open, the harness straps are on top. This eliminates getting dirt all over the harness and me when I throw it on my back again. Second thing I love about it is how the Z fits in the bag. Most bags have two seperators running the length of the bag. This bag has a huge compartment at the bottom that fits the Z perfectly. Great bag, reasonable price.

I moved to the 645z from Nikon D810 last month. I knew fall announcements were around the corner but I pulled the trigger anyway because the 645z exceeded my expectations for medium format.

It still does despite recent announcements from Fuji and Hasselblad.

I purchased a low shutter count 645z for $5,200 and bought 6 lenses. I'm blown away by the IQ and price for THE 645Z and used lenses!

The Fuji and Hasselblad announcements will drive 645 pricing down even further despite the fact that the 645z may well have a superior sensor.

So now everybody wins: Those who can't wait to get their hands on new technology and those who are happy with the 645z!

Cars, trucks, motorcycles you have had...that are your favourites and why ?

No fav cars or trucks.

I bought a 1969 Norton Commando in '69 and I loved that bike! I hated the Lucas ignition, but when I wasn't stuck by the side of the road with electrical problems, it was glorious!

Now that I'm 65, I don't scrape the pegs on cafe racers anymore. Instead, I scrape the floorboards on my '07 Roadking with my vintage, 1956 biker babe!

I live in Reno, NV so a twisty, mountain road is never far away.................

I'm trying to find a 35mm 645 A at a reasonable price.

B&H, Adorama and KEH have little or no inventory. There is one listed on the Marketplace forum but the seller hasn't responded to my PM or Reply. There are quite a few on eBay from Japan but I'd rather buy from one of you if possible.

I'm hoping you guys who have bought the FA or one of the zooms might have an A sitting around gathering dust!

Thanks for reading the post and hopefully I will hear from one of you soon.......Mark

How to carry gear on hikes ?

When I go for a hike I focus on equipment protection, comfort carrying the equipment, cost and accessibility That said, I currently use Mountainsmith for all my equipment.

In fact, I recently purchased a backpack for my 645z system. Mountainsmith Backpacks | B&H Photo Video

They are relatively inexpensive and very comfortable all day long. Best feature is that it opens up, shoulder straps up, so when you lay it in the dirt, the straps stay clean. If it's muddy I put the All Weather cover on to keep the back of the pack clean. I haven't found another backpack designed this way.

I think I spent $145 for a backpack that I think is one of, if not the, best available!~ Check it out at B&H or their website.

Kadajawi,

I very rarely delete an image. As someone else said, storage is cheap and I enjoy going back to an image I dismissed before but now have the vision and/or skills to work with it successfully.

If the final image is one that I would enjoy seeing everyday hanging on my wall, it's a keeper! For me it's that simple. I print and mat all my keepers.

Hey Bob,

You're right of course but I tried that on my DSLR and got so confused every time I was in a rush to get a shot off that it was comical! I guess you just have to keep at it to overcome the decades of rote memory!

Thanks again....Mark

645z AF Lock

A big hello to everyone! Recently joined your forum because I recently purchased a 645z! The forum has already been a great help to me as I try learn all about the Pentax 645 lenses.

I read the manual and the menu guide and found if very intuitive and easy to understand. I've been shooting Nikon systems for the past 10 to 12 years and that made it easy for me to understand how the system works.

Anyway, after studying the menus and manuals, I could not find anyway to AF Lock except to switch to manual focus on the lens! None of the button customization options seemed to offer AF Lock. It's not a huge deal as I usually use manual focus anyway but it does help when in AF and trying to set up a fast composition.

Love the 645z, love the MF Images and am pissied I didn't make the move a couple of years ago!

Thanks again for being here to help out us newbies...........Mark
