Thank you all for your comments. I am aware of how to set manual wb. I just thought there should have been a way to save it as a custom wb. I don't think the MWB option does this?

I am just wondering if I am missing something. I am taking an intermediate level photog class, and the instructor was talking about setting up custom white balance, but my KS-2 doesn't seem to have that option.. I can't imagine why they wouldn't include what sounds like such a simple option. I know you can just correct white balance in pp, but it would be nice to get it right in camera, and sometimes the best option is to use an 18% grey card.

Just the fact that I can't eliminate the available light at 1/180s. I did a small workshop with someone local, and they were using HSS. So without the flash, the picture was completely dark, but then having added the flash, the final result was a dramatic looking portrait. The effect was similar, to the image I have uploaded, but I did that with a 20" softbox and a black drop pinned to the wall. I guess that's how I'll have to work around it, and I suppose that isn't so bad.

Yeah, I have a 560 IV and TX as well, now. I just really wish I could get shutter speeds beyond 1/180, but oh well.

I took this photo December 25, 2016 in Simcoe, ON at the Panorama of Lights. I really liked the glow of the lights on the water, combined with the white-light Christmas tree topped with the star. I felt the image had a very tradition Christmas card 'feel' with the inclusion of the home in the background.

Would you be able to recommend a good ND filter? I seen several Cameron ones on the Henry's website ranging in prices from $30.00 to $175.00. i can't imagine $30.00 providing much quality, but perhaps the $175.00 one would.. On Amazon, I found a square LEE version, which I assume I'd then need some sort of adapter to mount it to the lens. It was $149.00 for that one. The ones at Henry's are proper, in that they are round and thread to apply directly to the lens,

Well, I've read up a little on ND filters. That seems like a good way to go. My idea is that I want to be able to take some portraits with little to no ambient light, with flash to fill. I could do it at night, but that's a bit restrictive. If I get a 10-stop ND filter, that'll probably do the trick, I think? I saw a Lee one on Amazon, but I'm not sure how they attach to the lens yet. More research is needed.

Sigh.. I guess I should have bought different flashes. Can they be used as slaves by a flash that supports hss?

Thank you - I didn't even think about that. I changed the EV steps from 1/3 to 1/2, and now I can set the SS to 1/180. Still, I need a way to get HSS so I can use 1/200 and beyond with my Yongnuo flashes.

I was curious about the Cactus V6 II triggers as well. I currently have the YN560 TX with the YN560 III and IV flash units. It seems that the flash units don't support HSS, Since the KS-2 has a sync-speed of 1/180, and I can't seem to set the shutter to that, I am stuck using 1/160, because the hot shoe gets turned off above 1/180. I don't like being stuck that low. I'd really like to be able to get shutter speeds of 1/800 and beyond for outside morning and late afternoon/evening shots. But I'm not sure if the Cactus triggers will do this or not.

I have a K-S2, and I know the Sync Speed is 1/180. I am happy to have found this post, because I didn't understand why my camera wouldn't trigger the flash @ 1/200 or higher. Now I do. The thing that still puzzles me, however, is that I can't even get 1/180 on my camera. It goes from 1/160 to 1/200. Is that the same for other K-S2 users?

Is this a good unit? It seems rather cheap. Yongnuo Professional Flash Speedlight Flashlight Yongnuo YN 560 III for Canon Nikon Pentax Olympus Camera / Such as: Canon EOS 1Ds Mark, EOS1D Mark, EOS 5D Mark, EOS 7D, EOS 60D, EOS 600D, EOS 550D, EOS 500D, EOS 1100D: Amazon.ca: Camera & Photo
I also found this one, which is more expensive, and am curious about it as well: CAMERON HSS240-N TTL FLASH TRIGGER SET
Thanks in advance. :)

Yeah that's it. I just want something to start out with. I'm taking a series of photography courses starting with the basic in October (basic digital) and following it up with intermediate, advanced, theory & history in the new year. There are also some electives I'll be taking. Small photog business, 2 on portraiture, and 2 on wedding photograhy. I expect by the time I get through he compulsory classes, I'll have had lots of practice with lighting and a much better understanding. Then I'll probably invest in flashes.

I have had no experience with auxillary flashes. I have only the one built into my K10D. ---------- Post added 09-26-16 at 06:40 PM ----------
I am doing portraits for a friends family. I'm hoping to sort out some equipment to buy, rather than rent. That is why I am looking for recommendations from people. I think it's a better investment in the long run, especially if I could find some gently loved equipment even. I still have to figure out how to price/what to price the session. It's primarily a learning experience for me. But I want to be as professional about it as I can manage. I have asked them if they have any 'must have' shots, and what sizes they are looking for and how many of each. Will go Friday to price some local printers.

And this will work for multiple subjects? My first session is a family portrait shoot.

I have done almost all my photography outside in natural light. I have a portrait shoot coming up and it'll be indoors.

Thank you Enoeske! I am very new to this and am not sure what I needed, so I found those on my preliminary search. if you have any suggestions of what I should be looking at, I'd appreciate it. I'll go hunt around some more on there
