Wide Angle Needed

It does add something to the photo, I agree, but I'm having trouble getting used to it. I don't shoot that many big buildings so when I see the results I try to figure out what I did wrong. I just need to remember that's part of the allure of wide angles.

I'm finding out that 18mm isn't really all that wide when it comes to big buildings. I thought about a prime but I travel a lot so I try to take a minimum number of lenses. I've been getting by this trip (Saudi Arabia) with the 18-250 and the 40mm so far. If I'm going somewhere long term I take the whole bag.

I'm going to try some night shots of the Kingdom Center and the Al Faisaliyah Center here in a little while. Wide won't be a problem this time, they're too far away to get close and I'm too lazy and tired to walk that far.

I've noticed that tilting effect before. The one I was trying to shoot recently was curved to begin with so I didn't really notice it.

Thanks for the info. I kind of thought the fish eye wouldn't be the best choice but it is tempting. I'll probably go with a Pentax 12-24 or maybe the Sigma 10-20. I'm still debating...

I was trying to shoot a large building a few days ago and found out I'm in need of a wide angle lens. I was using a Pentax 18-250mm (travel lens) and it was tough to get the whole building in the frame. I couldn't get further away as the Persian Gulf was in the way.

I thought about a fish eye such as the Pentax 10-17mm but I have a question. How easy (or hard) is it to fix the fish eye distortion at 10mm in PP if I wanted to?

I'm also looking at normal wides as well but it would be interesting to have a fish eye I'm thinking if the distortion can be fixed.

Thanks. Good idea, I hadn't thought of that.

Like this?

I also found this one with the boat closer to the sun. It's probably a better one to work on because of that.

Thanks for the advice.

I tried to get one with the people offset to the side but there was something in the way that prevented me from getting it. And the crop is what I was thinking as well.

I'm working in Venezuela at the moment and have been getting a lot of sunset shots since my hotel is right on the beach. I've never really worked with these types of shots before so I'm having a hard time deciding how to PP them. They have a heavy golden tint to them which I like but I also like them when I change the white balance to auto. It takes out some of the gold and adds some blue.

8821 needs to be cropped I think but 8819 I'm not sure about. The only editing I've done so far is to straighten them as I have the wonderful crooked viewfinder glitch.

Opinions?

I never bought a lens from them but I have bought other things there. They're a good outfit to deal with.

Sigma 100-300mm F4 Question

Mine works great too other than the problems I've mentioned. I love the photos I've gotten with it so far. I'm going to hate to be without it for however long it takes to get repaired. And mine seems fine at 100mm.

I thought I remembered seeing something on this somewhere but I couldn't remember if it was here or somewhere else. The problem is a twist doesn't seem to fix mine. Maybe it's how I'm doing it. I'll fiddle around with it and see if I can figure out exactly how it needs to be on the body to work properly, the exact position.

I did send an email to Sigma to see what they say about it. Even though it sounds common I don't think it's right.

If you get it via the Internet B&H Photo and Adorama are both good. There are probably others as well but those are the two most people use I think.

Sigma 100-300mm F4 Question

Yep, I thought of that first but it didn't do any good. It first happened after I shot some pics near the beach. I thought maybe somehow I had gotten some salt water or sand on the contacts when I was switching lenses. I looked at them and they looked fine but cleaned them anyways (with a cloth, no solvents), no difference.

Also, it's not the camera as I only have this problem with this lens. Forgot to add that in the original post.

Thanks

Sigma 100-300mm F4 Question

I recently bought a Sigma 100-300mm F4 lens and I'm pretty sure it has problems.

It doesn't always register when I put it on my K10D. In other words, when I put it on the camera sees it as a manual focus lens, asks me for the focal length (shake reduction), and won't auto focus. I'm not sure if it's a bad lens of if it's because of the weight of the lens making the contacts not line up. It also doesn't mount securely to the body. There is a little movement when it's mounted but not enough that I'm worried it will fall off the body. Also, the lens exif shows it as a Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX.

I'm wondering if anyone else with this lens has any or all of these issues? I'll probably send it back to Sigma for service/replacement when I get home (currently working in Venezuela).

SMC 500mm f4.5 Lens Hood

I ordered one of the Op/Tech lens hoods but somehow ended up with the wrong size, lol. Once I get home I'll try it on another lens and probably order the correct size for the 500mm. I would like to find something with a hard cover at the end, though. It may not be necessary but I'd feel better about the lens being protected that way.

112mm rings a bell. I'm out of the country right now so I can't measure it. I'll check out ebay and see what I can find.

Thanks!

edit: I just found the lens on ebay and it says the cap size is 118mm.

I recently bought an SMC 500mm f4.5 lens but it didn't come with the from lens cap. I hate leaving the front open to the elements. Does anyone have any idea about something I can use for a lens cap for this? I found something that might work on B&H

Op/Tech Hood Hat

But I'd prefer something a little more substantial.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I saw that auction while I was researching the lens. Pretty incredible.

KEH has one in BGN condition for $450 so this one may be a bit high but like Gary mentioned, it is local. I'll take my K10D there tomorrow and try it out and probably buy it. I'll also mention the one at KEH and see if the come down on the price a little.

Time ot dust off the M42 adaptor.

I came across a recently serviced SMC Takumar 500 f4.5 today for $500. I looked at the reviews in the lens database and it seems kind of mixed. It's in pretty good shape, clear optics, everything is smooth, no fungus before the servicing.

Is this lens worth $500? Can anyone who owns/ed one give me their opinion on it?

I get a feeling this one I shouldn't pass up and just want to confirm that.

Thanks,

Slick

Cleaning Fungus from a lens

I read somewhere that you can wrap the lens in aluminum foil and leave it in the sun for a while to kill the fungus. I never tried it and doubt it would clean it but it might help a little.

Lots of info here.

A few thoughts about travelling with the 100D and 4 lenses.

Add to that the 2 laptops and all the stuff in my computer bag and I figure I'm carrying around 30 to 40 pounds through the airports, maybe more, lol. It's a pain sometimes but some of the places I go don't have camera stores anywhere nearby so I have to carry what I think I'll need. Good thing I'm a big guy, plus the workout is good.

When I get home I'm going to go through the camera bag and store anything that didn't get used this trip.

I've been working in Europe for almost 3 months now and brought the K10D and 5 lenses. I brought the FA50, DA40, 18-250, Kiron 105 Macro, and Sigma 70-300. I carry everything in a Tamarac Pro 12 bag which I really like as a travel bag.

I never used the 70-300 so that was a waste.

The 18-250 is a great walk around lens. Other than macros this , I used this lens probably 90% of the time. I usually had the 18-250 on the camera and the DA40 in my pocket in case I needed it for low light situations like inside cathedrals. My only complaint is the long end. It's not horrible by any means, I just wanted better.

I should pick up something wider and fast too but I haven't yet.

My next trip I'll have the 18-250, 40, maybe the 50, the Kiron macro, and a Sigma 100-300 f4 I just ordered.

The Tamarac Pro 12 isn't a great walk around bag as it's pretty big. I did use it on my last vacation to Italy and it got heavy pretty quick with everything in it. I'd like to find some kind of a collapsible bag I can throw in my suitcase to use as a walk around bag. Something to carry the camera, a couple lenses and a few odds and ends. I have a vest I bought but never use it.

I recently had an external drive go bad as well. In my case it was the enclosure, not the drive. It might be worth moving the drive to another enclosure just to see if it can be read. I doubt it since CRC errors are usually bad media worth a try.

And, to save you the trouble, if you use net worth instead of total assets the percentage changes to .31%.

Total Assets = 689,444 ($6,335,738,255)
Total Liabilities = 136,192 ($1,251,713,445)

Net Worth = 553,252 ($5,084,024,810)

So,

Plant closings = $15,953,402/5,084,024,810 = 0.0031 * 100 = .31%

Still small.

Total Assets minus total liabilities gives you a corporation's net worth or shareholder's equity.

Net Worth

Nice try, though ;)
