The absolute madmen at Ricoh Pentax actually did it. They deleted the nasty pentaprism housing overhang. It looks beautiful.

Sure hope it comes with GPS. Though I never really understood why it needed its own button, it's not like there is any noticeable battery drain from it.

Ricoh GR III

Ricoh GR series have a massive cult following in the street photography world. Every iteration refines what a street photographer wants from a compact digital, which is something more like a premium film camera that fits in your pocket. It's such a great design, all it needs is polishing and trimming. Fuji has tried to come out with GR killers, but keeps failing. I get that some of you don't understand what this camera is or why it doesn't have improvements leaps and bounds ahead of the previous model, well this camera is on a league of its own. It's refining something that's near perfection.

Having said all that, I seriously question Ricoh's "bold" move to remove the built-in flash, especially on a camera with leaf shutter. Built-in flash is vital to any premium compact. The utility of always having fill flash available cannot be understated. At the very least Ricoh will need to release a tiny pocketable P-TTL external flash.

Pentax Mirrorless?

The more I think about it, the more I am convinced that Pentax getting into the Micro Four Thirds business would be an excellent idea as a spiritual successor to the Q series. They could call it the QF! For Quarter Frame, which is what MFT really is, a quarter of full frame. :D

This is my day dream Pentax mft camera: Take the Pentax LX as the base design, magnesium alloy or composite body, mode dial on the left of the EVF hump, other dials on the right. Beautiful mini DA* and mini DA Limited lenses for MFT mount. Since it's a shared mount, people won't complain about not enough lenses from Pentax, and I'm sure other MFT users would go crazy to buy Pentax limited lenses for their non-Pentax body as well!

What was your worst damage to your Pentax?

I was fishing from the beach and I caught a nice fish. It was my first fish from the surf, so I definitely wanted to capture it on camera! Took a photo, but in my excitement I dropped it on the sand! A small wave came in and completely soaked my Pentax Q-S1 with black standard prime lens with salty, sandy water....

This is quite possible the worse thing you could do to a camera short of dropping it in the ocean, but if the salt water wasn't bad enough, it had tiny sand particles in EVERY little crevice of the camera. I doused the camera is clean water to try and displace the salt and sand, but thought for sure this camera and lens were a goner....

This occurred about 2 months ago, and I still USE the camera to this day. It's absolutely unbelievable that it's still working!

As an aside, my Q telephoto zoom lens stopped working, it can no longer focus. It's kinda funny that the lens that was nowhere near the beach was the first thing in my Q system to fail.

Would I? Already have. I also would buy a Q if Pentax relesed a new updated model with no AA filter.

the new chip is truly the camera's selling point. better noise performance is actually top of my list of reasons to switch from my k-3 ii to kp. i feel like very few people appreciate how big of a deal the new chip is, they're all just saying this is a bizarre non-update to the K-1 and they never even mention the new chip and what big change it is for noise performance. i dont shoot high ISO a lot, but there are times when i've REQUIRED fast shutter speeds with high ISO, but my k-3 ii was just being pushed too much at its limits, even resized for web sizes

There's nothing wrong with an optical viewfinder. The same way there's nothing wrong with shooting film. They're both excellent things. I still own and shoot a film SLR and obviously a DSLR with an optical viewfinder which I likewise enjoy shooting very much. However, these facts do not preclude the other fact that EVF has been advancing far beyond what OVF can provide at its best. EVF allows a great deal of tools for manual focusing that OVF in a DSLR does not. For example: various focus peaking methods, zooming in several times, digital split image focus (Fujifilm). Another lovely thing that EVF provides is the ability to see the live histogram, the usefulness of which cannot be overstated.

EVF is not virtual reality any more than a digital photograph is virtual reality. The image viewed in the EVF is what the sensor is seeing through the lens. I have absolutely no issue using the rear screen on my Pentax Q-S1. Why should I be bothered by an EVF, which is essentially the same thing, but for eye-level usage?

You may not care for EVF, but they are certainly not a gimmick, they've truly come a long way.

You've set up the most ridiculous straw person to argue against. No one on PentaxForums has ever said such a thing, but you gladly assume it because apparently, it's the only way your accusations would make sense.

My K-3 II does more than I need it to, so I have no need to upgrade. I don't know if digital cameras can grow old with people the same way film cameras could. If I can get 10 years out of it, that'd be pretty good.

The last few days I've been taking pictures around town with my trusty QS-1, mostly in the street style with the standard prime.

I took this next one with the telephoto zoom, it's moments like these where I appreciate lens interchangeability in such a small package.

Shooting like this has really made me wish Pentax would put out a firmware update to give the Q a snap focus distance option like on the Ricoh GR. If you're in manual focus and you turn the Q off and on, the focus resets to some preset distance that's not good up close.

Pentax Firmware - Ever going to add features?
Posted By adjutant

Firmware updates doesn't necessarily have to mean "upgrades". It could just be simple changes that improve the user experience. Something simple that could be a firmware update is color-customizable focus peaking. Now that's obviously not some killer feature that will keep Pentaxians from upgrading their camera body in the future, but it's little things like this that are not hardware dependent that would certainly make us happier to have.

If it were up to me, I'd hire 3 programmers and lock them in the room and tell them, `your job is to make firmware updates that improve the users' experience using the available hardware'. You'd be surprised how much you can squeeze out of a camera with updates that have little to do with the hardware. The computer industry used to think the money was in the hardware, not the software.... now Bill Gates is rich! Look at what Magic Lantern has accomplished, fears of bricking your camera are grossly exaggerated. Imagine having Auto ETTR as a firmware update, or actual RAW histogram! Would be pretty cool, huh.

Pentax DSLRs getting too heavy?

If lighter weight means sacrificing build quality, features, and/or relative low price, I think I'll stick with a few more hundred grams. Not to downplay weight, even a hundred grams feels like a lot after a couple miles, but that's the sacrifice I'm willing to make when I decide to carry my K-3. For everything else, there's the almighty Q!

Pentax DSLRs getting too heavy?
Posted By adjutant
Replies: 166

I think that's because Pentax doesn't gimp their lower-end cameras the way Nikon does. Canon and Nikon entry level DSLRs are point-and-shoots with a pentamirror. If you've ever handled one, you'll realize the light weight is a consequence of overall consumer PnS-style build quality. Pentax might have a couple tiers of cameras available, but the build quality and performance difference between them isn't that much compared to Canon or Nikon's lineup where they go from really light, basic cameras, to full-featured beasts.

With Ricoh's most recent announcement, the Pentax lineup looks like it's about to get even narrower, shifting towards the high-end of the spectrum.

The level of apologizing and shutting down of people with contrary opinions on these forums is staggering. I honestly expected Pentaxians to be more honest with themselves about what their favorite camera brand does well and doesn't do well. If you really loved you camera, you would think that you'd want it to get better at some of its shortcomings rather than plug your ears and yell "la la la I can't hear you." You can criticize and love something at the same time!

When I see Fujifilm's autofocus settings, they seem a lot more comprehensive. `Focus priority', `how many AF points', `shutter or backbutton focusing' isn't exactly the programmable tracking algorithm I had in mind. TOP : Auto Focus System Special Site | FUJIFILM

The only setting that deals with how the software handles AF tracking is the low, medium, or high hold setting. This doesn't tell me how the camera handles objects suddenly appearing into the frame, how the camera handles objects briefly being in front of the subject, will it prioritize an object against the sky, etc. I can only hope that these 3 settings alone are enough to satisfy. I'm not sure, will need to do some research into what they mean exactly.

I do agree that the AF sensor coverage is an important issue. I will admit that is a hardware limitation that can't be solved by software.
