I agree with kanyck's observations. I have a MIJ FA43 and like it on the K-1 when I want to be less conspicuous than with a 24-70 zoom or when I want to travel as light as possible (with the not-so-light K-1). I prefer the FOV vs 50 mm; seems almost wide angle by comparison. Previously owned a FA50 f1.4, and found it soft/low contrast below f 2.8; the FA43 is perfectly usable wide open, already sharp in the center - and even to the edges if there is subject matter corresponding to the curvature of the field of focus. Both lenses are very sharp stopped down but I like the color rendition better on the 43. Seems like the blues are really intense compared to most other lenses. Bokeh can get pretty strange, from fish scales to bokeh balls to stained-glass or painted appearance. I generally use the 43 for landscape or street so bokeh is not an issue in these situations. The ability to stop down to f22 on full frame without noticeable loss of sharpness is also a nice benefit for landscape use. All in all, a very handy and versatile little lens.

Might be worth setting Crop to FF in the Camera menu, page 2 (if it's set to Auto or APS-C). I hope you find a solution as I am considering purchasing a DA 1.4X converter and would like to be able to use it on the K-1 as well as crop body. Best of luck,
Peterman

I owned the SMC version for a while; wonderful little lens and never had that issue. Ended up selling it in favor of the FA 77 Limited.
I also had an SMC DA 21 Limited, which is similar to the DA 70 in size and construction, that was purchased heavily used. The 21 had significant play in the lens barrel and photos showed uneven focus, so I sent it in for inspection and adjustment. That didn't improve things appreciably, unfortunately, and soon thereafter the autofocus began behaving as you describe. When the focus began to stiffen and bind, the lens barrel would visibly wobble during attempts to manual focus. Sadly, it seemed to have simply worn out. Hopefully that's not the case for your DA 70! Maybe others have had more encouraging experiences.
I replaced the SMC 21 with a new HD DA 21 Limited. Works perfectly, with tight tolerances.

The front will rock back and forth just a bit. Would be difficult to measure (1/2 mm or less) but you can see it. Enough movement that it will be audible walking around with it mounted. Fully extended at 70mm the wobble is pretty much gone, which is the opposite of what I'd expect.
For reference, my 60-250 is tight throughout the zoom range. However, my DA* 16-50 does have a bit of play in the barrel and even my DA 12-24 wobbles just a bit. I never noticed the play in either of those until I checked them out for comparison.
So...since the 24-70 is a Tamron design, perhaps the tolerances are not as tight as a Pentax Star lens? I'm concerned that decentering could be an issue, so I will take some test shots to evaluate.
