Spare batteries for Ricoh GRIII, IIIX

The middle pin marked (T) is for temperature sensor. The charger with middle pin wouldn't charge if the battery is too hot. Other than that the (+) and (-) pins are all it takes to properly charge a battery.

Disassembling D-Li90 battery clone

Ever since I got my K10d back in the days I wandered what hides inside the battery. With years I learned what could be expected but I still wanted to open one up. If only one of my batteries would die. No such luck until lately. I received a pair of D-Li90 clones for my K5 and one of them was dead. Rather than asking for a refund I decided to open it up.

-1- Dead D-Li90 clone with declared capacity of 1800mAh

-2- Opening it up took some work with aknife. Inside there is a protection circuit and two 18500 batteries with capacity of 1400mAh!

-3- New Sanyo 18500 1700mAh batteries soldererd in place.

-4- Since the old batteries were discharged below the safe limit the over-discharge protection blocked the circuit - I couldn't get a voltage read from contacts on the D-Li90 housing. Inserting it in charger unlocked the circuit.

-5- The battery charged as usual and was at 8,4V when the green light on charger went out.

Tomorrow I'll try it in K5.
The third contact (T) indicates that the original battery has temperature sensor. It most likely blocks charging if battery is too hot. The lack of it poses no threat as long as one doesn't charge hot batteries.

viv 283 for $20

$20 for a Vivitar 283 is a good deal. I should know as I've been watching a lot of them on Ebay and bought 3 for cca 25€ each. Some of them had additional equipment (sensor cable, filters). If I was after another one I'd pay $20.
Note that Vivitar 283 doesn't have swivel, doesn't work with rechargeable batteries and has a high trigger voltage (110-120V). Word on street is that Vivitar 283 made in vietnam has a low trigger voltage.

EDIT 23.2.2011
After making sure there is good contact I found out that Vivitar 283 works with rechargeable batteries very well.

Long live dumb phones. My Samsung 271 Xcover easily makes it through a week without charging. However, waterproof dumb phones don't seem to be made any more and a day will come when I'll get a smart phone too.

Mini vacation with WG-2

I got my self Pentax WG-2 and decided to leave K20D at home to get to know WG-2 better and also to travel lighter. We went to Rab on Croatian coast.

-1- At the time there was a three day festival called "Rabska fiera". The citiy was crowded.

-2- Rabska fiera is a sort of medieval festival with home made old fashioned food and drinks.

-3- The terrace of our residence. Don't let the picture fool you. Right under the terrace and next to the sea there is a regional road with lots of traffic.

-4- Unbelievably loud cicada.

-5- The best sun screen is a tree.

-6- No luck with fish baskets.

-7- Dirty water and bad visibility.

-8- We took a boat and went swimming in cleaner water.

-9- I wouldn't mind having a house like that.

-10- The water here was crystal clear.

-11- We took the boat back and left Rab the next day.

I must say I'm quite content with the WG-2. I was afraid of bad image quality but it's quite alright for web and it gets better in good conditions.

A week ago I took my camera in a cave as I usually do only this cave was really wet and muddy. No matter the efforts I couldn't keep my photo equipment clean and dry. This is how it looked like when I came home. Luckily the silica gel in an airtight household container dried the mud before too long.

If anyone is interested in the photos I took that day they are here

Fellow cavers recently made a huge discovery. An underground river that is obviously a missing part of a cave system.

-1-
The entrance to the cave was just a small hole at first.

-2-
These narrow passage had to be secured with steel bars.

-3-
Down a 100m shaft.

-4-
Delicate cave formations. Note that the girl is in socks. We picked up too much mud on our boots earlier in the cave and didn't want to contaminate this part.

-5-
Large galleries deeper in the cave.

-6-
Galleries rich with cave formations
